Remember Summoner? Back before Volition made Saints Row – nay, before it made Red Faction, even – it made a PS2 launch title which I swear to you did not look like jank on a stick at the time.

An RPG with over 20 side quests (ah ha ha) and more importantly some fun combat mechanics, Summoner was pretty alright and was followed by a sequel two years later, that being the sort of turnaround you could manage in those days without 200 strong development teams and tens of millions of dollars in the budget.

Published by THQ, Summoner was part of the job lot collected by Nordic Games, now happily rebranded THQ Nordic, which re-published both games on Steam in 2014.

Now it looks like the published intends to bring Summoner and Summoner 2 to PS4, as they’ve both been rated for the newer console by PEGI.

Well, everything old is new again. I wonder if the re-releases still include the secret cutscene animating the Dead Alewives Dungeons & Dragons skit? (By the way, that skit had a sequel, which is generally less known. You’re welcome.)

Summoner, eh? Gosh. I wonder when THQ Nordic will find the right partners to start making new games? Given the depth of the back catalogue it has on hand already, it could be a while.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition supporting PlayStation 4 Pro, teaser trailer released

THQ Nordic has announced Darksiders Warmastered Edition will be the first game from the firm released with PS4 Pro support.

Out next week, Darksiders Warmastered Edition will also feature doubled texture resolutions, rendering improvements, native 1080p on consoles, 60fps, and 4K support for both PS4 Pro and PC.

The firm said the Wii U version will run in 30fps, and a release date for the retail and digital versions will be announced at a later date.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition will be released on PS4 and Xbox One November 22. The PC version will be released on November 29.

Titan Quest: Anniversary Edition lands today and original title owners on Steam get it free

THQ Nordic is giving those who own Titan Quest or Titan Quest: Immortal Throne on Steam a present, and for those who don’t own it, you’re getting it on the cheap.

The free upgrade will also be applied for those who own Titan Quest Gold. Users will find the game has automatically been added to their Steam library starting today.

Titan Quest Anniversary Edition contains both Titan Quest and Titan Quest: Immortal Throne, each completely reworked in terms of multiplayer, stability, performance, balancing, AI and more.

THQ Nordic said all of the changes made to the original version released 10 years ago add up to roughly 1,261.

Those who don’t own the game yet (for shame!) can pick up Titan Quest Anniversary Edition for $4.99 until September 7. After that, it will run you $19.99.

Nordic Games has re-branded to THQ Nordic.

Nordic Games, the Swedish publisher who bought many of the IPs previously owned by defunct publisher THQ back in 2013, has changed its name to be THQ Nordic.

“While we take great pride in our Swedish roots and accomplished a great deal under the Nordic Games masthead, we decided it was time to incorporate the THQ name,” the publisher said in a press release.

Nordic added that this is part of a new approach to do more than simply own IPs. “We cherish [these IPs], and align them with the very best development resources to expand upon them with the level of experience that communities and established fan bases expect and deserve,” noted the publisher.

There are currently 23 games in development at Nordic THQ, according to the press release. 13 of which are yet to be announced, with Nordic promising to reveal them in the coming months. The majority of these projects are based on THQ IPs and franchises.

Since buying THQ IPs, the company released a remastered version of Darksiders 2 last year. A remaster of the original Darksiders is due for release later this year.

Now that Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets has regained the 1666: Amsterdam rights, he’s finally able to talk about the mysterious project. In fact, he’s done more than talk – he’s given us a look at it.

Footage of the cancelled game was shown during Désilets’s presentation at the Reboot Develop Conference in Croatia. It was captured off-screen and uploaded by Brandon Sheffield, who expressed a hope that Désilets would release a direct-feed version along with a bit of information:

“The game would have been for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the footage comes from a build of that era, two years ago. It would have become next (now current)-gen if the studio had not closed,” Sheffield wrote of details shared during the presentation.

“The game’s theme is ‘be worse than the devil,’ which is why the protagonist can control animals traditionally associated with black magic. This footage shows a real player running through the game in-engine.”

As well as the quality issues you’d expect from this kind of capture, the footage naturally looks rough. The project wasn’t very far advanced when THQ collapsed, and Ubisoft cancelled 1666 almost as soon as it got hold of it, having purchased THQ Montreal just four months earlier.

Now that we’ve seen it in action, you can see why – and I’m not just talking about the last generation, early production visuals: it’s very like Assassin’s Creed, isn’t it? Exploring a historical city filled with crowds of NPCs, third-person perspective, patrolling guards, signature weapon, combo melee combat, murder as (apparently) the primary gameplay system… Even the crates on hook and tackles.

That’s not to say it doesn’t look cool. It seems the player could control birds, cats and rats at the very least, and interact with NPCs in ways Assassin’s Creed doesn’t support. I’d be super interested in playing it, especially if the idea was to be a villain – but it probably seemed pretty redundant to Ubisoft, which had multiple Assassin’s Creed games on the go already.

By the way, did you notice the cane? Canes were introduced as weapons in Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. Syndicate also introduced a busy river, which echoes 1666: Amsterdam’s canals. This isn’t to suggest any wrongdoing on Ubisoft’s part; it absorbed most of THQ Montreal’s staff, after all.

Anyway, don’t hold your breath for 1666: Amsterdam. Although Desiléts fought hard to get his baby back, he’s currently working on Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. I wonder if “the new Assassin’s Creed” will ever be resurrected?

Ubisoft returns 1666: Amsterdam rights to Assassin’s Creed creator

The game once described as “the new Assassin’s Creed” is back in action.

As part of a settlement, Désilets has agreed to drop a $400,000 lawsuit against Ubisoft in return for the restoration of his “all creative and business control” over 1666: Amsterdam.

In a statement, Ubisoft Montreal and Toronto CEO Yannis Mallat said that he and Désilets have had their differences but “are above all interested in the creation of video games and the evolution of this medium of entertainment”.

“This agreement is good news for everyone. As we have always said, Patrice is a talented designer and we wish him all the best in the development of his future endeavors,” he added.

I hope you weren’t holding you breath for 1666, though; Désilets said the end of the years-long law suit means he can ‘devote himself entirely’ to Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, which as far as we know is an entirely separate project.

First revealed via trademark application in 2012, 1666: Amsterdam has never been formally announced or detailed, although we know it had something to do with Rembrandt. It was the product of the short-lived THQ Montreal studio, which was purchased by Ubisoft when THQ collapsed.

Despite some unpleasantness surrounding his departure and alleged poaching of Ubisoft staff, both Désilets and Ubisoft seemed pleased to be reunited – and yet the creative claimed to have been fired just four months later. Ubisoft axed 1666 almost immediately, and Désilets promptly sued.

Almost seven years later, that cancelled Saints Row PSP game has resurfaced

A Volition staff member happened upon something interesting in the studio’s storage closet recently: the cancelled PSP title Saints Row: Undercover.

Revealed way, way back in 2009 by Swedish metal band Opeth, the game was slated for release in 2010, but was eventually shelved by Volition. The studio and its publisher at the time, THQ, felt it didn’t live up to the Saints Row name.

Volition’s associate video editor Josh Stinson, according to Eurogamer, had no idea the game even existed until he happened upon the project stored on a old PSP dev kit.

Others he spoke with at the studio weren’t aware of the title either, save for some senior staff members.

“It was supposed to be a Saints Row 2 port directly to the PSP,” said video producer Alexander Mejia. “They realized it wouldn’t work, so then they started making [it] its own game.”

An outside studio was contracted to work on the title since Volition isn’t a handheld developer. And as mentioned above, it wasn’t up to snuff, so it was scratched.

To show fans of the franchise what they missed out on, luckily or otherwise, Volition will stream gameplay of Saints Row: Undercover next Thursday, January 28 on Twitch. Tune in at 5pm ET/10pm UK.

Footage of shelved first-person The Avengers game surfaces

The Avengers was a first-person action game intended to tie-in with the 2012 Marvel film, but canned in THQ’s death throes.

Unseen64 and DidYouKnowGaming teamed up to bring details of this project to light in the video below.

According to the team of sleuths, development at The Avengers kicked off in 2010 at Studio Australia in Brisbane, with input from Blue Tongue. It was intended to partner to the 2012 film, but would have its own story with different villains and a larger cast.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 project wandered from vision to vision, starting as a third-person game before being reimagined in first-person with an emphasis on co-op play. With a story similar to the Secret Invasion comics series, players would have faced off against a Skrull invasion which gradually captured and drew on the powers of earth superheroes.

The video includes many more details, prototype footage and concept art, and is a fascinating look at an ambitious project which was sacrificed during THQ’s dramatic downsizing.

THQ went bankrupt in December 2012, about seven months after The Avengers opened in cinemas. The film went on to bring in $1.5 billion at the box office and goodness knows how much more in merchandising revenue.

Guillermo del Toro swears off video games, and who can blame him

Celebrated filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is 100% done with making video games.

Bad news for fans of films like Pacific Rim, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth and like a hundred other terrific things: del Toro doesn’t want to bring his singular genius to video games any more.

It’s not that the writer and director doesn’t like games. It’s just that after his last few experiences – THQ’s InSane and Konami’s Silent Hills – he’s kinda over the whole thing.

“I have proven to be the albatross of video games,” he told Shack News.

“I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I have decided I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something.”

In the full linked article, Del Toro talked a little bit about how much work went on during the two years InSane was in the works at THQ, and said he learned a great deal from working alongside Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima on Silent Hills.

It’s not all bad news – del Toro said he’s happy for others to make games based on his works, and will continue learning from Kojima as a friend. But no more games for him personally.

“If I join another video game, World War III will start,” he said.

DarkSiders 2: Definitive Edition listed for PS4 on Amazon

It looks as though Nordic Games plans to release PlayStation 4 versions of two IP it acquired through the THQ auction, starting with DarkSiders 2: Definitive Edition.

Per listings posted on Amazon (thanks, AGB), alongside DarkSiders 2: Definitive Edition is the former THQ property MX vs. ATV: Supercross Encore Edition will also be released for PS4.

Nordic also has listings for JoWooD Entertainment titles Arcania – The Complete Tale on PS4, Legend of Kay HD on PS4 and The Adventure Company’s The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 for PS4 and Xbox One on Amazon.

Each game has a placeholder date of December 31, 2015 for the time being. We’ll shoot Nordic a mail and see what we can find out.

More South Park: The Stick of Truth DLC could happen, but don’t hold your breath

A year after its release, South Park: The Stick of Truth developer Obsidian Entertainment is looking into the possibility creating more content for the game, but don’t get your hope up.

Speaking with Polygon, Obsidian boss Feargus Urquhart said he believes that Ubisoft is “done” with South Park: The Stick of Truth despite the potential for more story related DLC.

“I don’t know what [the DLC] could be,” he said. “We had always talked about it, extending the story through DLC, it was just stuff on paper, but it never went beyond talking about it.

“That was when THQ was involved. When it moved to Ubisoft, there was more pressure to get [the game] done. I think that became the priority, so we got it done.”

Development of the game at South Park Digital Studios had a bit of back luck at the start when Viacom backed out of publishing due to trying to sell Harmonix.

The publishing rights were picked up by THQ, which went bust, putting the South Park title on the market for Ubisoft to snatch up for “15 to 20 cents on the dollar.”

Crunch time commenced for Obsidian and South Parks’ Matt Stone started coming in “every day” to work “on the project.”

“The South Park team did an immense amount of work on the game,” said Urquhart. “After all of the stress of the game getting done and changing publishers, I think everyone sort of needed a hug.”

With a nice long break from the game, Obsidian is now pondering the possibility of creating more DLC. Whether or not Ubisoft bites remains to be seen.

Details of THQ’s Scrapped Avengers Game Surface

At one time THQ was working on an Avengers game that was supposedly to release alongside the movie in 2012. The game was then never heard of again and was presumed to be scrapped.

Early development details of that project have now been released through a new report by Unseen64. The lengthy post includes information on the first-person co-op beat ‘em up and assets ranging from proposed in-game models to early concept art and story plot. It was supposedly in development for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, with plans for a Wii U port sometime after release.

Pre-production on the Avengers game is said to have begun in August 2010. Even though it was being planned for a release alongside the movie, the game was to feature a standalone storyline that would feature the Skrulls alien race from the Marvel comics.

One source cites that the story was penned down by Brian Michael Bendis, a comic veteran who has been behind Secret War and Secret Invasion. This however, has yet to be authenticated.

According to other artists involved in the project, the game would see to a Skrull invasion. “A huge mother ship hovering above the city controlled by ‘priests’ which sat in the highest level. Veranke along with various generals and what not, headed the Skrull forces. One of the Skrull objectives was to enslave all superheroes and mimic their powers by shape shifting.”

The playable characters roster was to include the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine and Mrs. Marvel. Other non-playable characters that were being considered included Vision, Ant Man and Ultron.

The production phase went smoothly into 2011 and a majority of the game’s mission environments were already made. By mid 2011, development fell into disarray due to “massive missteps” by THQ. The decisions crippled the studio and caused higher-ups to lay-off around 200 developers. Avengers came to a halt and following the THQ auctioning, never saw the light of day again.

Here’s another look at canceled Saints Row game Money Shot

Back in 2011, a classifications reference as well as screenshots for a Saints Row game called Money Shot surfaced, and today, more footage of the canceled game has surfaced.

The game would have been downloadable on PlayStation Network for PS3, where it would have been free, and through Xbox 360 and 3DS.

According to the video description from BananaSwag, via the Se7enSins forums, upon completion all the unlocks received would open in the “Moneyshot addon for Saints Row 3.”

The game was in development at MX vs ATV Alive studio THQ Digital Phoenix.

It was thought at the time Money Shot was a reworked version of Saints Row: Drive By which THQ said was not in development after a resume stating it had been canned turned up online.

Saints Row: Drive By was announced by Nintendo during E3 2010 as a new title coming to 3DS.

Nordic Games has purchased the IP rights to de Blob

Nordic Games has acquired the rights to the de Blob IP from THQ, the firm has announced.

The asset purchase agreement with THQ Inc. and THQ International closed yesterday.

“de Blob is just a great and truly unique franchise”, said the firm’s Reinhard Pollice. “We are excited about what the future holds for this polychromatic extravaganza as the newest addition to our portfolio. We will evaluate opportunities with the existing games, as well as potential sequels.”

The first entry in the Blue Tongue-developed platform-puzzle franchise released in 2008 on Wii and was published by THQ.

A mobile version followed the console release, while the Nintendo DS port, developed by Halfbrick Studios, never made it to stores.

The follow-up, de Blob 2, was released in 2011 on DS, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360.

Saints Row: The Cooler is a brawler you’ll never play

Saints Row has run the gamut from serious to near-parodical remix of itself, and it’s been a hilarious ride. But there’s one venue it won’t be exploring anytime soon, it looks like: the fighting game arena.

Saints Row: The Cooler is a now-defunct project originally in development for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 funded by THQ, with development being handled with Heavy Iron Studios, out of Los Angeles. After THQ’s dissolution, the project was obviously canceled, but thinking about what could have been is interesting.

Work began way back in March 2010 on what a Heavy Iron Studios artist referred to as a “brawler game,” where you’d “go to a bar, pick a fight,” and “smash a bottle over someone’s head.” It would be the first Saints Row game to completely utilize Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s PlayStation Move to allow players to control their characters only via motion.

A team of 40 people was assigned to the project, which eschewed the open-world sensibilities of the Saints Row series and would feature several different activities to engage in beyond brawling.

Set in areas like slaughterhouses and bars, there would be about 8 locations in the Saints Row universe, with a “bar” ecosystem that would allow for gambling, lap dances, ordering drinks, and other activities you’d expect out of games like Grand Theft Auto’s ilk.

“The Cooler” referred to the character who would eventually be the game’s protagonist, a “bouncer” of sorts that players would be in control of who would work his way into working in “higher class joints.”

After the team worked diligently on The Cooler for about six months and reached 60% completion, THQ canceled the project with no explanation given. One member of the development team did mention “quality concerns” as the reason, but there was no formal announcement to the public or to the press regarding its cancellation.

It’s believed that, due to comments from a former Heavy Iron Studios animator, the developer repurposed some assets for the Kinect title UFC Personal Trainer: The Ultimate Fitness System, which released in 2011.

Motion Controls Saints Row: The Cooler Was Once A Thing

Were you waiting for a Saints Row game with motion controls? Well, according to Unseen64, a game site that specializes on lost projects, there once was something called Saints Row: The Cooler.

Now defunct publisher THQ started the project in 2010. There was a version planned for Xbox 360, which used Kinect, as well as a Playstation 3 version with the Move peripheral.

Apparently, THQ was shopping the Saints Row property around, because it wasn’t Volition working on the game, but Heavy Iron Studios. Given that house has worked on games like the awful Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse or Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two on Wii U, maybe it’s best it never saw the light of day.

Saints Row: The Cooler wasn’t an open world title like the other games in the franchise. Instead, players would go through a series of locations from the first two games and fight people with motion controls.

Aside from the punching and kicking mechanisms, there would’ve also been mini-games. Saints Row: The Cooler would offer poker or even lap dances to players.

Originally, Saints Row: The Cooler was set for release in mid-2011. THQ axed the project six months in, after noting quality concerns.

Until then, the developer had already managed to climb up to 60% completion. A team of 40 people were put on the game.

Later, Saints Row: The Cooler elements were repurposed and used in another motion control title from THQ, UFC Personal Trainer. It’s not exactly the pinnacle of motion control games, but it did manage to get some decent ratings.

Saints Row: The Cooler received its subtitle from its main character, which would be sent in to “cool off” situations.

Darksiders 2 $50 million budget was “ridiculous”, says Nordic boss

Darksiders owner Nordic Games has no intention of throwing $50 million at the franchise as THQ did.

Darksiders 2′s budget was far too generous, according to Nordic Games boss Lars Wingefors.

“Darksiders is a top product. THQ spent $50 million making Darksiders 2. We can produce a product of the same quality but for a lower cost,” he said in the latest issue of MCV, as reported by Gamespot.

“$50 million is ridiculous. I can’t afford that.”

Wingefors said that while Nordic might not have the financial grunt of a publisher like EA, its growing catalogue of properties means he expects the company to tick along nicely indeed.

“The THQ deal was the best I ever made,” he said.

“I spent $5 million from my own bank account. It was a lot of money for me, but we got the money back very quickly.”

Nordic Games acquired Darksiders along with a grab bag of other properties after THQ collapsed last year. It later picked up the rights to THQ’s name and vowed to continue the brand.

One thing Nordic doesn’t want to do, despite this talk of making quality products on the cheap, is dilute the properties it has acquired and thereby its own investment. The publisher’s plans to continue THQ’s franchises seem pretty sane.
