GTA Online: new Infernus Classic available for $915,000 but is it worth your cash?

28 Mar

You might want to hold out for the release of the Turismo Classic.

gta_online_cunning_stunts_again

How’s your Maze Bank balance looking this month? Because if you’ve got $915,000 spare in GTA Online you can pick up a nice-looking new motor.

The Infernus Classic is the latest sports classic to be made available as part of the Cunning Stunts: Special Vehicle update.

It has pop-up headlights, which I know for a fact, is enough to tempt people like me with a purchase. I’m shallow like that.

But! If you’re not as shallow as me and you want to know if the performance of the Infernus Classic is up to scratch you might want to hold onto your hard-earned moolah.

According to Broughy1322, it’s not that the car isn’t quick, it’s just that the Turismo Classic, which will release next week, is much quicker.

He tested both cars out on the PC version of Grand Theft Auto Online using mods and the Turismo Classic is closer to the performance of GTA’s Supercars. Check the video below for a the full lowdown.

If you’re jumping into GTA Online this week remember that there’s double RP and $$$ on a selections of Special Vehicles Circuits for the next couple of days.

Also new today is another Adversary mode – Resurrection.

Knock yourselves out.

GTA 5: here’s a look at how the Liberty City map modding project is coming along

24 Mar

The crew responsible for the OpenIV toolkit has provided a new look at its GTA 5 mod that adds Liberty City to the map.

liberty_city_in_gta_v_1

The team isn’t recreating the GTA 4 version of Liberty City, it’s just adding the map to GTA 5. But thanks to the OpenIV system, it will look lovely, of course. You can see more of the current state of the mod over on the gtaforums and the OpenIV website.

Liberty City in GTA V was revealed in January, and the first beta is expected sometime this spring.

Those who wish to participate in the beta, or who plan to download the mod upon release, will need to own GTA 4 or Episodes from Liberty City for it to work in GTA 5. They will also need to have the converter tool and OpenIV installed on their PC.

liberty_city_in_gta_v_2

Once available, GTA 5 players will only need to hop on a plane and fly to Liberty City in order to drive down all the streets and visit various sites familiar to GTA 4 players.

Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game of January 2017, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, other heavy-hitters play musical chairs

17 Feb

The NPD group has released hardware and software figures for January 2017 and it should come as no surprise that PlayStation 4 and Resident Evil 7 topped the respective sectors.

January 2017 NPD at a glance

Resident Evil 7 tops software charts

PS4 was best-selling console

PC software spend declined 12% year-over-year

All categories – accessories, hardware, software – down 4% year-over-year

Compare month-on-month: December 2016

Compare year-over-year: January 2016

While hardware sales declined, software was up 14% to $313 million. NPD attributed the increase to Resident Evil 7’s release, especially when comparing the year-over-year (yoy) release slates.

It’s also worth noting Resident Evil 7 was only on the market for five days when the NPD reporting period ended.

“With only five days in the market, Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game in January,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “The last time Capcom had the best-selling game of the month (in dollar sales) was in March 2009 with Resident Evil 5.”

First-person shooters Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 were still two of the best-selling games for the month, and neither title has fallen off the chart since release in fall 2016.

Overwatch also returned after dropping off the NPD software list in October.

The rise in sales could possibly be attributed to various discount offers or the Overwatch Year of the Rooster event; however, that’s just conjecture on our part as NPD didn’t elaborate on why Overwatch was once again charting. It was, however, one of the best-selling games of 2016 per NPD’s yearly report in January.

Action titles Grand Theft Auto 5 and Watch Dogs 2 also remained on the chart, while sports titles Madden NFL 17 and FIFA 17 remained popular with US consumers as well.

PC software came in at $16 million, a 12% decline yoy from $18 million.

NPD Software Top Ten January 2017

You’ll notice not much changed on the chart since December 2016, as the heavy hitters played musical chairs and that’s about it.

The biggest changes were the entry of new releases Resident Evil 7 and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue – the second best-selling PS4 title for the month.

Pokemon Sun and Moon and Final Fantasy 15 fell off the chart, and again, Overwatch reentered it.

The full NPD software chart is below, but keep in mind not all digital stores report sales data. Some publishers who sell through the PlayStation and Xbox Stores report data, but others do not. For example: Microsoft, Sony and Blizzard (Battle.net) do not report first-party sales.

  1. Resident Evil 7 (PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  3. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  4. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  5. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (PS4)
  7. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Watch Dogs 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  9. Overwatch (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  10. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

This month, NPD also started reporting catalog sales of titles from the first six months of availability – starting with month seven (thanks, MCV). The winning publisher in the category for January 2017 was Take-Two and it was also the top publisher for 2016. NPD attributed this to continued sales of GTA 5.

NPD Hardware January 2017

Last week, the initial NPD report had PS4 topping hardware followed by Xbox One – which according to Microsoft enjoyed year-over-year (yoy) growth compared to January 2016.

PS4 sold the most units, with Xbox One coming in second place, and Nintendo’s Nintendo Classic Mini: NES in third.

“The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware (in units sold) during January 2017,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “And for the fourth consecutive month, PlayStation 4 Slim System 500GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Bundle was the top-selling PS4 sku in terms of units sold.”

For the month of January 2017, hardware totaled $127 million, a decline of 19% yoy compared to $157 million in 2016.

Accessories declined 17% yoy to $155, with toys-to-life skus (ex: Skylanders, amiibo, Lego Dimensions) showing the biggest decline.

Total spent in the US on accessories, hardware and software for the month January hit $611 million. While that’s indeed as large figure, it’s 4% less compared to $637 million spent in 2016.

NPD said the lower figure was due to a decline in hardware sales and general lack of growth.

Take-Two says Red Dead Redemption 2 Online won’t compete with GTA Online, avoids talk of sales forecast

8 Feb

It looks like the online mode for Red Dead Redemption 2 will be a big part of the game, the same way it has been for GTA 5.

red_dead_redemption_2_trailer_grab_black_bars_9

GTA Online has been very successful for Rockstar parent company Take-Two. In fact, the mode attracted a record number of users just this past December, years after GTA 5’s release.

Naturally, during the company’s most recent earnings call, investors wanted to see if there’s any worry the online mode for the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 will complete with the incredibly popular GTA Online. CEO Strauss Zelnick doesn’t believe so.

“I’m fond of saying entertainment is an unusual animal. And that entertainment properties don’t really compete with other entertainment properties and that you never need entertainment,” he said.

“Entertainment is something that you want to have, but it’s not a need to have. If nothing in the market appeals to you at some time, there’s no reason to go and get it. And if multiple things appeal to you, avid consumers will consume all of those things.

“So, I don’t think there’s any competitive dynamic with any of our upcoming releases apart from the fact that our success is driven by quality. So, I think, the success of Red Dead, which is highly anticipated, will be driven by its quality. And I think the ongoing success of Grand Theft Auto Online is driven by its extraordinary quality,” he added.

With that in mind, the Zelnick said that the company is “incredibly excited” about the game’s online offering, and reiterated that future information about it will come from Rockstar directly.

As for the sales potential of Red Dead Redemption 2 itself, Zelnick didn’t want to share any forecasts, but he did confirm that the original shipped 8.5 million copies during the first year, with a total of 15 million units by the end of its life cycle.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is due for release sometime this year for PS4, and Xbox One.

Switch leaves Take-Two “intrigued and excited”, impressed by Nintendo’s “great effort” to woo third-parties

30 Nov

Nintendo Switch has won some hearts over at 2K and Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive.

nintendo_switch

The Nintendo Switch is exciting, according to Take-Two president Karl Slatoff, and Nintendo’s making all the right noises with regards to third-party support.

“We’re very intrigued and excited about it,” he said during the Credit Suisse Technology, Media, and Telecom conference this week, as reported by Gamespot.

“The Nintendo folks I think are making a great effort to reach out to third-party developers, which I think is fantastic.”

“I would say we’re very optimistic and they’re good partners. We’re excited to work with them in the future on it.”

If this article feels familiar to you, it’s not déjà vu – “games industry executive talks up upcoming hardware without giving any meaningful detail” is one of the major classifications in video game news taxonomies.

I mean, here’s Ubisoft saying Switch will sell a lot without explaining why, and more recently, Gamestop saying Switch will sell a lot without explaining why. It seems to happen at every console reveal.

Well, here’s hoping Nintendo goes into detail when it gives Switch launch details at a January event. Take-Two itself is holding off before getting too enthusiastic, actually:

“With any new hardware, there is always an element of ‘wait and see,’ and the install base is going to drive a lot [of Take-Two’s level of support],” Slatoff said.

Take-Two is the parent company of Rockstar and 2K, so its catalogue includes blockbuster properties like GTA, Red Dead Redemption, BioShock, Borderlands, NBA 2K and WWE 2K. You can see why Nintendo’s on the catch, and it did manage to get some NBA 2K Switch concept footage out of the publisher for the Switch reveal trailer.

Given Nintendo’s historical difficulties in the area of third-party support, it’s really heartening to hear it’s working hard; let’s hope it sustains this effort right through the console’s lifespan.

Thanks to GTA Online and its 70M units shipped, digital net revenue was up 14% during Take-Two’s Q2

2 Nov

In Take Two’s Q2 financials release for the fiscal year ending 2017, the firm noted Grand Theft Auto 5 and BioShock: The Collection were two of the biggest contributors to revenue for the quarter. And GTA 5 has now shipped 70 million units lifetime.

red_dead_redemption_2_characters_close_up

Back in February, the firm reported during its Q3 fiscal year 2016 report the game had sold GTA 5 had shipped over 60M units worldwide. That’s a 10 million unit jump sold to retail, and taking Q4 results into account, and extra 5 million units.

NBA 2K16, Grand Theft Auto Online and XCOM 2 were also noted as being the other games which contributed largely to the firm’s 21% growth.

For fiscal second quarter 2017, net revenue grew 21% to $420.2 million, as compared to $347.0 million for fiscal second quarter 2016. Net income was $36.4 million compared to $54.7 million year-over-year.

“Mafia 3 reviews were lower than we would have liked, but consumers are buying it hand over fist.” – Take-Two CEO.

Digital net revenue was up during Q2 by 14% to $230.8 million, as compared to $202.4 million during Q2 fiscal year 2016.

Recurrent consumer spending on virtual currency, downloadable add-on content and online games accounted for 56% of digitally-delivered net revenue, or 31% of total net revenue.

The largest contributors to digital revenue were NBA 2K16, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online.

Mafia 3 was the fastest-selling game in 2K’s history, generating week one sell-in of more than 4.5 million. Note that “sell-in” is the same as shipped, which means sold to retail.

“Mafia 3 reviews were lower than we would have liked,” said CEO Strauss Zelnick, “but we and our competitors are seeing anomalies in the review systems.”

“But we have had an enormous amount of great reviews and consumers are buying it hand over fist, and that’s what we go by.”

Sell-in to date of NBA 2K17 is currently more than 4.5 million units as well.

“Take-Two’s business continued to outperform during the second quarter, enabling us to deliver strong net revenue and better-than-expected bookings growth,” said CEO Strauss Zelnick. “Our outstanding results were highlighted by the series’ record-breaking launch of NBA 2K17, ongoing robust demand for Grand Theft Auto 5, and increased recurrent consumer spending, including year-over-year bookings growth from Grand Theft Auto Online.”

He went on to note the holiday season was already “off to a great start” due to successful new releases Mafia 3, WWE 2K17 and Civilization 6.

“We intend to support our titles with innovative offerings designed to promote ongoing engagement and drive recurrent consumer spending, including additional free content for Grand Theft Auto Online< ' he said. Looking ahead, Zelnick feels the company's fiscal 2018 will be another strong year for the company due to its release slate led by the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2. "The game's vast and atmospheric open world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience," he added, reiterating the information provided with the game’s official announcement.

The firm said it was pleased to be a partner with Nintendo on Switch, but would announce titles in the works for the console at a later date.

A call to investors will start shortly. Zelnick isn’t one to be drawn on providing more information than he feels necessary, but if anything interesting comes out of the call, we’ll let you know.

GTA Online’s Bikers DLC kicks off with week-long discounts, launch trailer and New Adversary Mode

4 Oct

To help you get started with the new Bikers DLC in GTA Online, Rockstar Games is offering new rewards, discounts and a fun new Adversary mode.

Slipstream is the new Adversary Mode in the Biker DLC for GTA Online where your team of fellow bikers will need to hit checkpoints at the same time. Other teams will also be trying to hit the finish line first, so be sure to strive for the lead position. There are seven maps ready to go as of now.

One of the ways to do this is to take advantage of other players’ slipstreams for speed boosts – similar to what cyclists do in a race.

Another example of using a slipstream is a convoy. Large semi-trucks take advantage of slipstreams or drafting as it’s called when on the interstate by driving back-to back. The slipstream caused by the moving trucks help the drivers save fuel. Hopefully that gives you an idea of what a slipstream is in case you were unfamiliar with the term.

Also, using timed melee attacks, players can knock other folks off their bikes. That will help things as well, plus provide you with the satisfaction that comes with hitting someone.

The patch notes for the Biker DLC are live, and rather extensive. Along with the new features and content, some fixes have also been applied. You should give the list the once over.

Discounts are being offered on Body Armor and Ammo, and players can take 25% off high-capacity Drum and Box Magazines and discounts are also available for Weapon Tints.

Bioshock: The Collection on PC has the same bugs as the original and then some

16 Sep

The Steam reviews are in and people are not impressed.

bioshock the collection (1)

Bioshock: The Collection came out this week and it’s not just Rapture that’s made a comeback.

According to a number of PC players on a reddit thread and a good portion of reviews on Steam, the remaster is plagued with the same bugs as the original.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun lists the problems along with fixes. These include the lack of options for 5.1 surround, mouse smoothing issues, and audio issues to name a few.

Unsurprisingly, with the initial release almost a decade ago, players aren’t too thrilled that these bugs have persisted in the remaster.

Approximately half of all reviews on Steam are negative as a result.

Hopefully PC players will see a patch pretty sharpish to sort this out. In the meantime, you can grab Bioshock: The Collection for both PS4 and Xbox One now.

GTA: Lindsay Lohan vs Rockstar case thrown out of court

2 Sep

GTA 5 developer Rockstar has gained the upper hand in an ongoing legal tussle with Lindsay Lohan.

gta_5_lindsay_lohan_vs_rockstar

While Lohan’s lawyers continue to make a reasonable case that her likeness appears in GTA 5 and its marketing materials, without consent, the case has been thrown out of court because there’s no law against sending someone up in your video game.

Drawing on court documents, the Wall Street Journal reports the case hinged on New York’s right-of-publicity law, under which a person’s portrait, picture or voice cannot be used for advertising or trade purposes without written consent.

On Thursday, an appeals court panel in Manhattan ruled that GTA 5 “does not fall under the statutory definitions of ‘advertising’ or ‘trade’. This video game’s unique story, characters, dialogue, and environment, combined with the player’s ability to choose how to proceed in the game, render it a work of fiction and satire.”

The panel did not make any comment on whether it believed Rockstar had indeed deliberately leveraged Lohan’s likeness into a GTA 5 paparazzi mission sequence. However, it did say that the famous red bikini peace sign girl and frisking images used in promotional materials are depictions “not of Lohan herself, but merely the avatar in the game that Lohan claims is a depiction of her”.

In the same session, the panel threw out a similar case filed by Karen Gravano, the daughter of Mafia informant Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, who claimed the character Andrea Bottino was based on her. Bloomberg reports Lohan’s lawyers plan to appeal, and Gravano’s team is exploring its options.

The battle between Lohan and Rockstar over GTA 5 has been simmering away for years now. The duel was first rumoured in late 2013 but broke cover in July 2014 when Lohan filed suit against Rockstar in Manhattan.

Pooh-poohing the case in August 2014, Rockstar said Lohan was just angling for attention – but Lohan’s lawyers came back with an expanded complaint in October 2014.

Although there’s a fashion for deriding Lohan’s complaints, a New York judge allowed the case to move forward as recently as March this year.

Usually these things continue to drag on with appeals and counter-appeals, so we probably haven’t seen the last of Lohan vs Rockstar yet – and probably won’t until GTA 5 falls out of the sales charts, if it ever does.

The annual event in Germany ends this weekend, and with the barrage of information and assets, we thought we’d put all of the gamescom 2016 news in one place for you.

Microsoft and Sony didn’t have a stage presence this year, which meant no word on Project Scorpio or PS4 Neo. Both were happy enough to release plenty of trailers and assets though, along with a few bits of news tossed in for good measure.

Activision, 2K Games, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft never disappoint when it comes to announcements and new visuals to whet our appetites for the holiday release season.

We were treated to a Destiny livestream, a neon-laden mode for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, two multiplayer livestreams from EA (hello, Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2), and Ubisoft sent out quite a few assets leading to the end of year push and things got rather stinky with its South Park: The Fractured But Whole marketing.

And let’s not forget Square Enix. With the delay of Final Fantasy 15, Square Enix took pity on us by releasing a lengthy gameplay video and plenty of lovely screenshots of the game. Alex was also able to get his hands on the RPG earlier in the week, and he posted his impressions of his time with the game.

New content for Hitman was released, a PC announcement for Nier: Automata surprised us all, and images of classic Lara Croft in Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration graced our screens.

Bethesda, Nintendo, Bandai Namco, Konami and Koei-Tecmo, more

Konami announced Metal Gear Survive which caused some to scratch their heads, others to gnash their teeth, and some may have shed a tear or two.

Bethesda released a teaser video for Prey, showing off a bit of gameplay and we were also provided a look at Emily’s powers in a new Dishonored 2 video.

A beta demo for Nioh was announced and it will have tons more content than the Alpha demo which was released back in April.

Nintendo provided a look at new Pokemon from the Alola region in Pokemon Sun and Moon and dangled four The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild carrots at us throughout the week.

Plenty of other companies dropped news on upcoming titles or provided another look at them with lovely screenshots and trailers. Have a look at the list below.

Wow. That’s a colossal list of links. Obviously a few have likely slipped through the cracks. It happens.

But if you head to the very, very top of the post, you will see a link to our gamescom 2016 hub. Be sure to give it a click.

Alex and Matt were in Germany this week attending the show, so expect more gamescom 2016 coverage from us over the next week – once the fellas are over their beer and sausage hangover.

WWE 2K17 drops Showcase mode and introduces Promos

15 Aug

Plus the game will have the largest roster to date.

wwe2k17

WWE 2K17 is going to be somewhat different to the previous titles in the series, as 2K Games detail the changes in store for the new title.

“One of the largest and most difficult decisions we made for WWE 2K17 was to forego building a 2K Showcase,” executive producer Mark Little wrote in a recent update. “In all, we didn’t feel good about creating a Showcase that was not up to our standards and current development vision, so we decided to take that effort and put it into modes our community requests we keep improving: WWE Universe and MyCareer.”

The Universe mode aims to recreate the drama of the weekly shows, so that “players feel like they are playing through a weekly episode of any WWE television or WWE Network program.” They’ve also thrown in pre- and post-match attacks and run-ins, to increase the TV show vibe.

MyCareer features the new Promo Engine that will have wrestlers calling out or responding to other “WWE Superstars,” while backstage brawl gameplay adds to the atmosphere.

Lastly, there has been some clarification on the roster. While it seemed that we’d see up to 150 wrestlers, 2K hopped over to the forums to say that, “The 150 number was part of early development coding on our interactive map and is not representative of the final roster list. However, we can ensure the WWE 2K17 roster will be the largest to date and encourage you to continue checking out official roster reveals each week – as part of the Suplex City Census – on IGN.”

WWE 2K17 is scheduled for release on October 11 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One.
