The Sniper Elite 4 Honest Trailer understands how most people play stealth games

16 Feb

Outside of making fun of a few obvious quirks, the Honest Trailers treatment of Sniper Elite 4 is well aware of what we actually do in these games.

By popular request, YouTube channel Smosh Games has released a new Honest Game Trailers episode looking at the recently released Sniper Elite 4.

The trailer obviously plays a bit with the x-ray kill cam feature and how they’ve been expanded to include melee this time around, but it actually has a few good points to make about the sometimes unnecessary story.

There’s also a few good laughs to be had about their critique of the game’s multiplayer modes. It’s all in good fun, as these tend to be.

Sniper Elite 4 reviews round-up – all the scores

Sniper Elite 4 reviews are in. Just how satisfying is it to shoot gonads this time around?

sniper_elite_4_hitler

Sniper Elite 4 is about a lot more than bursting people’s ball bags from afar.

But that’s certainly a fun aspect, as is tracking down Hitler.

The game is releasing on Valentine’s Day with various pre-order bonuses and the season pass is available at launch.

If you’re wondering whether it’s worth revisiting World War 2, here’s what everyone else thought. As usual scores are out of 10 unless stated otherwise.

Sniper Elite is out on February 14, on PC, PS4 Xbox One.

Sniper Elite 4 launch trailer released along with Season Pass details

10 Feb

Sniper Elite 4 is out next week, which means it’s time to give the launch trailer a watch. Also, Rebellion has provided information on the game’s Season Pass.

In the trailer, you get to see Sniper Elite 4’s Karl Fairburne use all of his “cunning, adaptability and ruthless precision,” to carry out his tasks.

Neat trailer. Now, let’s move on to details for the Season Pass.

The Sniper Elite 4 Season Pass will give players access to all 12 of the game’s post-launch content packs. This includes four full campaign missions for up to two players along with all pre-order bonus content, such as the previously announced Target: Führer campaign mission.

Other pre-order bonus content includes the Camouflage Rifle Skin Pack which comes with detailed skins for all seven of the game’s starting rifles, for use in any mode.

Other Season Pass content includes the following:

  • Three new campaign missions: A three-chapter campaign, separate from the main storyline, which features massive, diverse new environments that eventually lead Karl out of Italy for a thrilling finale.
  • Three expansion packs: Each expansion pack will be released alongside a campaign mission, and each includes three new weapons, eight new weapon skins and two new characters.
  • Weapon and character packs: Three weapon packs including silenced weapons, famous wartime Allied rifles, and equipment for taking on foes at close quarters. Also includes three new characters for use in both co-op and multiplayer.

The Sniper Elite 4 Season Pass will run you $34.99/€34.99/£29.99 and will be available at launch.

As previously announced, all new multiplayer maps and modes released after launch will be free for all players.

Sniper Elite 4 is a direct sequel to Sniper Elite 3, and continues the story of marksman Karl Fairburne. He’s in Italy this time out, fighting alongside the Italian Resistance. Initially slated for release at the end of 2016, the game delayed into February 2017 due to Rebellion’s PlayStation VR title Battlezone arriving in the same quarter.

Sniper Elite 4 will be released next week on February 14 for PC, PS4 and Pro and Xbox One.

The game will also support DirectX 12 on PC and PS4 Pro.

For PC users, in addition to supporting DirectX 12, if you’ve yet to upgrade to Windows 10, the game will of course still support DirectX 11.

Sniper Elite 4 will be released on February 14 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Sniper Elite 4 trailer explains all the things you can do that don’t involve shooting people in the nuts

1 Feb

Sniper Elite 4 evolves the series in many ways, here are some of them.

Sniper Elite 4 is out very soon, and developer Rebellion wanted to remind everyone of the many features the game offers, beyond X-ray nut shots.

The trailer is split into segments showcasing the co-op campaign, the combat, enemies, weapons, and the multiplayer and co-op modes on offer. It really is a comprehensive look at what the game has to offer, showcasing how much more advanced it is than previous entries.

More recently, the studio invited the press and YouTubers to play the PC and console versions. You can hit the link if you’re looking for less scripted footage.

Sniper Elite 4: watch PC and Xbox One footage, showing two different playstyles

20 Jan

Two playthroughs of Sniper Elite 4, on two different platforms, using two different approaches.

Sniper Elite 4 developer Rebellion recently invited the press to a capture event to demo the latest build of the game. Both Alex and Westie were there, and they each brought some gameplay to show you.

Alex’s video above was captured from the Xbox One version, and he plays it very cautiously, planning his moves and picking isolated targets. He starts off showing single-player gameplay from the campaign, before moving on to a little bit of survival.

Survival tasks you with holding out and defending an area from waves of enemies. The mode can be played in co-op, and looks to offer different gameplay from the predator-style mechanics of the single-player.

The next video is from Westie, and although it’s also from the campaign, he plays it like an action. Westie captured PC footage, and past the video introduction, there is no commentary.

His approach is interesting though, mainly reliant on rushing the enemy and taking out targets from relatively close ranges. It’s definitely worth watching to see how the game reacts to the different styles.

Of course the Sniper Elite 4 pre-order bonus has you killing Hitler

14 Dec

Sniper Elite 4 will, once more, let you kill Hitler.

A new trailer for Sniper Elite 4 shows of the Target: Führer campaign.

As usual, the campaign is included with purchase if you pre-order before Sniper Elite 4 releases in February, and will be sold as DLC for everyone else.

The bonus campaign supports one to two players and includes specific trophies and achievements to encourage replays. Here’s the PR description:

“Featuring an expansive coastal environment – including a lofty U-boat facility packed with elite Nazi troops and the kind of environmental hazards that would make any health and safety inspector run for the hills – players will get a fantastic taster of Sniper Elite 4’s open-ended approach to tactical third-person combat, rewarding not only their sharpshooting skills, but also their wit and creativity.”

Sniper Elite 4 is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Sniper Elite 4’s first gameplay trailer teases the Target Fuhrer pre-order mission

20 Sep

The debut gameplay trailer for Sniper Elite 4 has arrived.

As you can see, the gameplay trailer showcases some of the many additions and improvements coming to the World War 2 shooter alongside a look at the lovely Italian backdrop.

You will also notice at the end of the trailer is a teaser for the pre-order bonus.

Those who pre-order Sniper Elite 4 will be handed the extra campaign mission, Target Fuhrer, for free. The Hitler-assassinating bonus mission takes place a corner of the Mediterranean where a secret Nazi U-boat facility threatens Allied shipping.

Agent Karl Fairburne is there to assassinate the base’s commander, but he finds the man already met his demise thanks to a “shadowy visitor.”

Now, the mission has a new target: the imposing U-boat base and Hitler himself. This is a re-playable campaign mission for 1-2 players.

Along with the mission, pre-order customers will also be given the Camo Rifles Skin Pack which features camouflaged sleeves for the game’s seven rifles.

Sniper Elite 4 is now available for pre-order digitally and at retail on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Sniper Elite 4 pre-alpha gameplay looks wonderfully brutal

17 Mar

A new level of polish makes the X-ray kill cam even more gruesome.

Eurogamer got a peek at the pre-alpha gameplay for Sniper Elite 4 and it looks glorious.

The usual bullet kill cam is sticking around, but two new ones have been added, perhaps as an incentive to find more varied ways of killing people – although trusty nad shots will always do in a pinch.

The shrapnel kill cam lets you see the carnage caused by explosions or environmental damage, and you can gleefully watch bits of debris plunge into your enemies’ extrmeties.

The melee kill cam gives you an X-ray view of any poor sod on the receiving end of your fist or knife.

Meanwhile the smallest map, shown off in the video above, is three times the size of the largest map in Sniper Elite 3, while the largest map is apparently five times as big as its counterpart in the previous game.

There’s a host of other new features – like booby trapping bodies – so if you’ve got 10 minutes to spare, have a watch.

Sniper Elite 4 is out later this year on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

War is hell in this Zombie Army Trilogy gameplay trailer

27 Feb

Here’s five minutes of headshots, shambling zombies and an undead Hitler from Rebellion’s upcoming Zombie Army Trilogy.

The Sniper Elite spin-off arrives on PS4, PC and Xbox One March 6 and includes three games (obviously) and a new Horde mode.

Metacritic and review scores are “irrelevant” to Sniper Elite dev

17 Feb

Review scores roll off Rebellion like water off a duck’s back, because its games sell strongly, turn profits, and make people happy.

sniper_elite_3

Sniper Elite 3 launched in mid 2014 and received a range of review scores – but it also topped the charts and made a tidy profit for Rebellion thanks to its comparatively modest development budget.

In an interview GamesIndustry, CEO Jason Kingsley said the developer doesn’t much care about review scores, preferring to please its players.

“Nobody here ever bothers about Metacritic. We think of it as irrelevant, quite frankly,” he said.

“We only concentrate on what the users think, and every aggregate user score has been significantly higher than the aggregate professional score. We care about the people who are spending their money, and whether we’re happy that we’ve made a good game.

“The acid test isn’t somebody’s abstracted number.”

Kingsley went on to acknowledge the difficulties of professional reviewing, but said critics don’t necessarily feel the same about games as general consumers. It’s more valuable for Rebellion to get its games in front of players than critics.

“The greatest value for us as digital publishers, if you like, is in embracing YouTube and Twitch and the normal people being seen playing our games,” Kingsley said.

“It lets you see what the gameplay is like, and make a decision on whether you like that and want to play it. You might not actually care whether it didn’t seem totally original to one person, or that the story was a bit crap. That new approach has taken over.”

There’s been a lot of discussion about review scores recently; Eurogamer has just dropped them, for example. We’ve never been a fan of them here at VG247, but so many people find them compelling that we round up other people’s scores on the regular.

It’s an interesting debate; clearly there’s an audience for scores, but we could probably replace every review of a non-broken game with “your mileage may vary”.
