Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game of January 2017, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, other heavy-hitters play musical chairs

17 Feb

The NPD group has released hardware and software figures for January 2017 and it should come as no surprise that PlayStation 4 and Resident Evil 7 topped the respective sectors.

January 2017 NPD at a glance

Resident Evil 7 tops software charts

PS4 was best-selling console

PC software spend declined 12% year-over-year

All categories – accessories, hardware, software – down 4% year-over-year

Compare month-on-month: December 2016

Compare year-over-year: January 2016

While hardware sales declined, software was up 14% to $313 million. NPD attributed the increase to Resident Evil 7’s release, especially when comparing the year-over-year (yoy) release slates.

It’s also worth noting Resident Evil 7 was only on the market for five days when the NPD reporting period ended.

“With only five days in the market, Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game in January,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “The last time Capcom had the best-selling game of the month (in dollar sales) was in March 2009 with Resident Evil 5.”

First-person shooters Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 were still two of the best-selling games for the month, and neither title has fallen off the chart since release in fall 2016.

Overwatch also returned after dropping off the NPD software list in October.

The rise in sales could possibly be attributed to various discount offers or the Overwatch Year of the Rooster event; however, that’s just conjecture on our part as NPD didn’t elaborate on why Overwatch was once again charting. It was, however, one of the best-selling games of 2016 per NPD’s yearly report in January.

Action titles Grand Theft Auto 5 and Watch Dogs 2 also remained on the chart, while sports titles Madden NFL 17 and FIFA 17 remained popular with US consumers as well.

PC software came in at $16 million, a 12% decline yoy from $18 million.

NPD Software Top Ten January 2017

You’ll notice not much changed on the chart since December 2016, as the heavy hitters played musical chairs and that’s about it.

The biggest changes were the entry of new releases Resident Evil 7 and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue – the second best-selling PS4 title for the month.

Pokemon Sun and Moon and Final Fantasy 15 fell off the chart, and again, Overwatch reentered it.

The full NPD software chart is below, but keep in mind not all digital stores report sales data. Some publishers who sell through the PlayStation and Xbox Stores report data, but others do not. For example: Microsoft, Sony and Blizzard (Battle.net) do not report first-party sales.

  1. Resident Evil 7 (PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  3. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  4. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  5. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (PS4)
  7. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Watch Dogs 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  9. Overwatch (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  10. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

This month, NPD also started reporting catalog sales of titles from the first six months of availability – starting with month seven (thanks, MCV). The winning publisher in the category for January 2017 was Take-Two and it was also the top publisher for 2016. NPD attributed this to continued sales of GTA 5.

NPD Hardware January 2017

Last week, the initial NPD report had PS4 topping hardware followed by Xbox One – which according to Microsoft enjoyed year-over-year (yoy) growth compared to January 2016.

PS4 sold the most units, with Xbox One coming in second place, and Nintendo’s Nintendo Classic Mini: NES in third.

“The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware (in units sold) during January 2017,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “And for the fourth consecutive month, PlayStation 4 Slim System 500GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Bundle was the top-selling PS4 sku in terms of units sold.”

For the month of January 2017, hardware totaled $127 million, a decline of 19% yoy compared to $157 million in 2016.

Accessories declined 17% yoy to $155, with toys-to-life skus (ex: Skylanders, amiibo, Lego Dimensions) showing the biggest decline.

Total spent in the US on accessories, hardware and software for the month January hit $611 million. While that’s indeed as large figure, it’s 4% less compared to $637 million spent in 2016.

NPD said the lower figure was due to a decline in hardware sales and general lack of growth.

Nintendo Switch pre-orders already at 80% of the console’s initial shipment in Japan

27 Jan

The Japanese audience has already pre-ordered 80 percent of the Nintendo Switch allotment for the country.

switch_again

Nintendo previously said it’s planning to ship 2 million units of the upcoming Nintendo Switch by the end of March.

That’s the worldwide estimate, and although we don’t have exact numbers for each of the big regions, we at least know that Japan is doing pretty on pre-orders. Just like the West, the console is very hard to find in Nintendo’s native country.

According to analysts at Media Create (via DualShockers), 80 percent of the available stock has already been pre-sold.

The firm revealed the data in its latest weekly market bulletin, and the site reports that online retailers are all out of stock at present.

The Nintendo Switch is out in Japan and everywhere else on March 3.

Now Walmart is taking pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch at $400 – rumour

11 Jan

Walmart is either playing it super safe, or it knows something we don’t.

nintendo_switch1

The retail price of the Nintendo Switch is still a mystery. It’s a mystery that pundits and inside sources have more less pinned down, but nothing is ever confirmed until it’s official.

A picture of a pre-order sticker for the Switch at US retailer Walmart made its way to Reddit earlier. It shows the price being $399, which is way higher than any of the previous estimates.

walmart_switch_price_1

The Reddit user who posted it said he works at the retailer, and although the sticker has yesterday’s date, the image is of a very low quality and could be a fake.

Most recently, Japanese financial paper Nikkei said the console will sell for around $250. The magazine revealed accurate information about the Japanese games industry many times before, and the price is more in line with previous leaks.

What’s likely to happen is that Nintendo will release different SKUs at different price points, depending on how many games are included or if other accessories will be part of the package.

That said, $400 is too high a price for what the Switch is supposedly capable of, at least when it comes to raw power. There’s a near slim chance Nintendo will sell the console for more than what you can currently pay for PS4 and Xbox One, even if it comes with a couple of games.

Final Fantasy 15 sold over 694,000 units at Japanese retail its first week on sale

7 Dec

Sales figures for Final Fantasy 15 in Japan have revealed by Media Create.

final_fantasy_15_omen_stills-5

The retail sales tracking firm posted its weekly report today, and Final Fantasy 15 debuted in two spots on the Top 20 chart.

In first place was the PS4 version of the game, which sold 690,471 units on PS4. This includes both Limited and Bundled Editions of the game, as noted on Gematsu. The Xbox One version of the game came in 19th with 3,791 units sold.

Total units moved in the five days it was on sale during the reporting period came to 694,262 units.

It also helped boost PlayStation 4 sales from 42,102 units the prior week to 118,350 units. Sony announced today 50 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold worldwide.

Square Enix announced last week Final Fantasy 15 is the fastest-selling title in the series, with day-one shipments hitting 5 million worldwide. The figure includes digital sales.

It’s worth noting Media Create doesn’t track digital sales, and the announcement from Square stated the game broke a record for first-day digital sales in Japan. The firm didn’t provide actual sales data, just shipped numbers.

NPD figures for the US have not been released, but we expect the report to drop soon.

Final Fantasy 15 was released on November 29 for PS4 and Xbox One.

Pokemon Sun and Moon shifted 1.5 million units in Europe during release week

30 Nov

Pokemon Sun and Moon is doing well in Europe, and is the most successful launch for the series in the region, ever.

pokemon_happy (2)

That’s according to Nintendo which announced today that Pokemon Sun and Moon sold 1.5 million units its first week on the market.

Included in the figure are UK numbers, which total 368,000 copies. According to GfK Chart Tracker, Pokemon Sun debuted at number three on the weekly charts, and Pokemon Moon at number during last week’s reporting period.

According to the the chart tracking firm, if both titles were combined, the latest entry would have debuted in top spot. Instead, that honor went to FIFA 17, which was followed by Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare at number two.

Figures for North America have yet to be announced, but with the NPDs coming up soon, we expect Nintendo to release unit sales – if not beforehand.

In Japan, the games moved 1.9 million copies during the first three days of availability, and this week moved an additional 375,665 units.

Get a PlayStation 4 Pro with a game and a wireless headset for $400

24 Nov

If you’re going to buy a PS4 Pro, this is the best deal you can get today.

ps4_pro_wide_no_logo

The PlayStation 4 Pro is featured a lot less in this year’s Black Friday deals than the smaller Slim brother. You’d be hard pressed to find it for less than $400, and the only deals around offer just an extra game with it.

Which is why this NewEgg deal is all the more impressive. The retailer is offering a PS4 Pro with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and a Plantronics GameCom P80 wireless gaming headset for $400.

The headset alone is worth over $60, and Mankind Divided is a solid game that also has PS4 Pro support, so it’s a win-win-win. Take a look at the deal through this link.

The deal is available until Sunday, November 27 or until supplies last.

The Division is down to just $10 on Amazon right now

23 Nov

Grab The Division for an unbeatable price from Amazon.

division_clear_sky

Amazon is offering the standard edition of The Division for the low, low price of $10. This applies to all platforms – that’s PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The offer is available from Amazon directly, but doesn’t extend to the digital versions of any of the three platforms. Digital codes are on sale, but nowhere near as low as $10.

Take a look at all three deals from here: PC, PS4, Xbox One.

The Division’s second DLC, Survival, came out this week on PC and Xbox One.

Nintendo Switch could “expand the audience for gaming,” says GameStop CEO

23 Nov

GameStop executives have only good things to say about the Nintendo Switch.

nintendo_switch_skyrim

GameStop CEO Paul Raines talked briefly about the upcoming Nintendo Switch during the retailer’s recent earnings report. Raines had attended a hands-on demo of the system and shared some of his thoughts during the earnings call.

“The Nintendo Switch, which I played at Nintendo a few weeks ago–we believe could be another game-changer,” said Raines, as reported by Gamespot. Interestingly, the executive said he believes the console will “expand the audience for gaming.”

Though he didn’t elaborate on that point, Raines is likely referring to the hybrid nature of the Switch, bringing together the incredibly profitable and popular handheld business together with home consoles. Pokemon Sun and Moon, the most recent 3DS title has done great for the retailer, and it’s not hard to see why the concept of the Switch excites him.

GameStop is also seeing healthy pre-order interest for the Switch, as reported earlier. The numbers are similar to those Xbox One had pre-launch at a similar point in time.

Nintendo Switch is out in March.

Pokemon Sun and Moon the biggest games of 2016 at GameStop, Call of Duty underperformed

23 Nov

GameStop’s recent earnings report show a decline in sales during one of the busiest months of the year for new releases.

gamestop store

GameStop published earnings report for the quarter ended October 29. The retailer saw a drop of 2.8 percent year-over-year in global sales, due in part to underperformance from games released in the “last few weeks of October”.

As reported by Gamespot, Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon performed the best out of any game at the retailer all year. Pre-orders for the pair were the highest for any game at the retailer in the last five years.

On the opposite end, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare underperformed. Call of Duty games have traditionally been one of the retailer’s best-selling titles each year.

For hardware, the GameStop said that PS4 Pro is off to “a strong start”, and PSVR was still selling well, only staying on shelves for an average of ten days.

The upcoming Nintendo Switch is tracking well so far, too, according to the report. 27 percent of GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards members who are aware of the console, plan to buy it. This is in line with what the data Xbox One had at a similar point in time.

destiny_the_collection_trailer_grab_1

Xbox 360 backwards compatible games are getting reprinted, sold at retail in new boxes

17 Nov

Xbox 360 games that work on Xbox One are being sold at retail in shiny new covers.

It looks like publishers are beginning to market Xbox One’s backwards compatibility feature outside of Twitter and Facebook. One Reddit user spotted updated covers for Fallout 3 and Doom 3 at retail.

As you can see, the games are packaged in a new box, with their cover now clearly displaying the fact they’re playable on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. In the case of Fallout 3, the version on the shelf offers the complete package (DLCs etc), and they appear to not be priced higher than the ones with the old cover.

new_xbox_360_discs_for_backwards_compatible_games_doom_3_bfg_1 new_xbox_360_discs_for_backwards_compatible_games_fallout_3_1

This is probably just repackaging done by either Microsoft or Bethesda, since the discs included are identical, and both will be recognised by Xbox One for backwards compatibility. Still, it’s nice to let the general public know of the feature.

Target is slowly revealing its full slate of deals for the coming Black Friday season. Some are even being offered starting today as part of an early access scheme, such as these deals on Battlefield 1, and Titanfall 2.

Not everything is live now, of course, and the few we have below will be available starting 6pm on Thanksgiving/Black Friday. These prices will be updated in-store as well as online at the links below.

    Here we go:

There’s also a New Nintendo 3DS Super Mario Edition bundle going for $99, available in both black and white variants, though the store doesn’t appear to have a page for it just yet.

Target pre-Black Friday deal drops Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2 to $35

    10 Nov

Target is lowering the price of two of this year’s hottest shooters on PS4 and Xbox One.

Target has gone a bit early with its Black Friday deals this year. The retailer is offering Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2, two very recent releases, for just $35 each.

The retailer is calling it the Black Friday Early Access Sale, and the discount is valid only on the physical versions of PS4 and Xbox One. It’s valid through November 11, both in-store and online.

There’s one thing though, you’ll see the low price when you add the game to your card. Alternatively, you can use the store’s Cartwheel app at stores.

    Here are the links:

Amazon is also offering a similar deal, but only on PS4 copies of Battlefield 1. Just like the Target deals, you’ll need to add the item to your cart to see the price.

Digital games will amount to 30% of all sales on PS4 & Xbox One by end of 2016, says EA

    2 Nov

EA has revealed some interesting stats about the share digital games currently have in the market, both for itself and the rest of the industry.

    FIFA17_XB1_PS4_JOURNEY_HUNTER_OFFICE_WM (Copy)

As is tradition, EA opened the floor for questions from investors following yesterday’s Q2 2017 financial report. The answer to one particular question may have just given us the closest thing to a hard stat on just how big the digital market is compared to retail.

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said that the company ended fiscal year 2016 with digital amounting to around 24 percent of all game sales. That’s just for PS4 and Xbox One, and Jorgensen added that including PC in this would bring the number up to 75 or 80 percent.

“We think the industry is going to probably [be], by calendar year end, around 30 percent. And our internal estimates are around 29 percent for ourselves,” said the CFO, before explaining that the one percent lag is due to FIFA’s popularity in regions where good bandwidth and credit card availability are not great, which hurts digital sales.

Also during the call, EA talked a little bit about the decision to offer free DLC for Titanfall 2 instead of the traditional season pass model.
