Pokemon Sun and Moon players can grab a pair of Mega Stones for Mewtwo from today

3 Mar

Pokemon Sun and Moon players are being handed a distribution code for two Mega Stones to evolve their Legendary Pokemon Mewtwo. Also, Nintendo has provided a date on when to expect Mega Stones for Mawilite and Beedrillite to drop.

pokemon_sun_and_moon_mega-mewtwo-distribution

The code allows Pokemon Sun and Moon players to evolve Mewtwo into either a Mewtwonite X or Mewtwonite Y when the creature is handed one of the Mega Stones. This will allow Mewtwo to Mega Evolve two different ways during battle.

Here’s the Mewtwo Mega Stones code: M2DESCENT

This is a global code so it should work in any region. An end date for the distribution event is not known, so it would be best to go ahead and claim it.

Since Mewtwo cannot be found out in the wild in Sun and Moon, players will need to bring it into Pokemon Bank via Poke Transporter from earlier games. These Pokemon will lose their items in the process, but this is the only way to get Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y into the game at present.

If you have never entered a code before, you will need to follow these steps:

  • Select Mystery Gift on the main menu.
  • Select Receive Gift.
  • Select Get with Code/Password, then Yes, and then Yes again to connect to the Internet.
  • Enter your code.
  • Watch as you receive Mega Stones.
  • Speak to the deliveryman in any Pokemon Center to pick up your Mega Stones.
  • Be sure to save your game.

As far as the missing Mega Stones for Mawilite and Beedrillite are concerned, the code is being handed out to a limited amount of players beginning March 7, per serebii.net. A shared serial code for both of these stones will be made available to all in April.

Per a previous report, the other missing Mega Stones for Sun and Moon will be handed out through various events and online postings through summer, without a wait period attached.

Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game of January 2017, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, other heavy-hitters play musical chairs

17 Feb

The NPD group has released hardware and software figures for January 2017 and it should come as no surprise that PlayStation 4 and Resident Evil 7 topped the respective sectors.

January 2017 NPD at a glance

Resident Evil 7 tops software charts

PS4 was best-selling console

PC software spend declined 12% year-over-year

All categories – accessories, hardware, software – down 4% year-over-year

Compare month-on-month: December 2016

Compare year-over-year: January 2016

While hardware sales declined, software was up 14% to $313 million. NPD attributed the increase to Resident Evil 7’s release, especially when comparing the year-over-year (yoy) release slates.

It’s also worth noting Resident Evil 7 was only on the market for five days when the NPD reporting period ended.

“With only five days in the market, Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game in January,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “The last time Capcom had the best-selling game of the month (in dollar sales) was in March 2009 with Resident Evil 5.”

First-person shooters Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 were still two of the best-selling games for the month, and neither title has fallen off the chart since release in fall 2016.

Overwatch also returned after dropping off the NPD software list in October.

The rise in sales could possibly be attributed to various discount offers or the Overwatch Year of the Rooster event; however, that’s just conjecture on our part as NPD didn’t elaborate on why Overwatch was once again charting. It was, however, one of the best-selling games of 2016 per NPD’s yearly report in January.

Action titles Grand Theft Auto 5 and Watch Dogs 2 also remained on the chart, while sports titles Madden NFL 17 and FIFA 17 remained popular with US consumers as well.

PC software came in at $16 million, a 12% decline yoy from $18 million.

NPD Software Top Ten January 2017

You’ll notice not much changed on the chart since December 2016, as the heavy hitters played musical chairs and that’s about it.

The biggest changes were the entry of new releases Resident Evil 7 and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue – the second best-selling PS4 title for the month.

Pokemon Sun and Moon and Final Fantasy 15 fell off the chart, and again, Overwatch reentered it.

The full NPD software chart is below, but keep in mind not all digital stores report sales data. Some publishers who sell through the PlayStation and Xbox Stores report data, but others do not. For example: Microsoft, Sony and Blizzard (Battle.net) do not report first-party sales.

  1. Resident Evil 7 (PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  3. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  4. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  5. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (PS4)
  7. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Watch Dogs 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  9. Overwatch (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  10. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

This month, NPD also started reporting catalog sales of titles from the first six months of availability – starting with month seven (thanks, MCV). The winning publisher in the category for January 2017 was Take-Two and it was also the top publisher for 2016. NPD attributed this to continued sales of GTA 5.

NPD Hardware January 2017

Last week, the initial NPD report had PS4 topping hardware followed by Xbox One – which according to Microsoft enjoyed year-over-year (yoy) growth compared to January 2016.

PS4 sold the most units, with Xbox One coming in second place, and Nintendo’s Nintendo Classic Mini: NES in third.

“The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware (in units sold) during January 2017,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “And for the fourth consecutive month, PlayStation 4 Slim System 500GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Bundle was the top-selling PS4 sku in terms of units sold.”

For the month of January 2017, hardware totaled $127 million, a decline of 19% yoy compared to $157 million in 2016.

Accessories declined 17% yoy to $155, with toys-to-life skus (ex: Skylanders, amiibo, Lego Dimensions) showing the biggest decline.

Total spent in the US on accessories, hardware and software for the month January hit $611 million. While that’s indeed as large figure, it’s 4% less compared to $637 million spent in 2016.

NPD said the lower figure was due to a decline in hardware sales and general lack of growth.

Pokemon Sun and Moon missing Mega Stones distribution starts later this month with Mawilite and Beedrillite

15 Feb

Nintendo has revealed how it will distribute the missing Mega Stones which Pokemon can hold in Pokemon Sun and Moon.

pokemon_mawile

According to information posted on Serebii (thanks, Nintendo Everything), these missing Mega Stones for Pokemon Sun and Moon will be handed out as presents to those participating in Online Competitions.

These include the 2017 International Challenge February competition, which will distribute Mega Stones for Mawilite and Beedrillite. Serebii notes a “limited amount of players” will receive the code ahead of a one to two months wait period before other Sun and Moon players are handed the Mega Stones code.

Another way players will receive codes for the stones is through various events and online postings. These will not have a wait period attached. The distribution of these codes will vary depending on the Mega Stone, and players can expect the same method of distribution for the codes through summer.

Mega Stones able to be used by a specific number of Pokemon during battle, and when held, it turns them into mega powered-up versions. Once the stone is removed, they revert back to normal.

The mechanic was first introduced in Pokemon X and Y and was also made available in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

A new 2D Zelda game on Switch is “definitely a possibility”

15 Feb

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has talked about the possibility of the 3DS Zelda team creating a new 2D experience for Switch in a new interview.

linkbetweenworlds

Speaking with Game Informer, Aonuma was asked if the team behind the 3DS Zelda titles, the amazing A Link Between Worlds and so-so Triforce Heroes, would be brought in on the next big Zelda game to expedite development, since Breath of the Wild took such a long time.

Aonuma says that this is unlikely to happen. “The 3DS team and the Wii U team have different approaches to game development, so I don’t necessarily want to combine them and have them think together, but rather have each think about what they can bring to Nintendo Switch from their own perspective.”

When asked directly if this meant the Switch may receive a 2D Zelda game in the future, Aonuma said that this was “definitely a possibility”.

“There are definitely good things about the 2D world and the playstyles of the 2D world,” he told Game Informer. “There are a lot of fans who enjoy that style … For the 3DS team, I am trying to make them think in a more evolved 2D-style approach.”

This isn’t solid confirmation, of course, but it sounds like a distinct possibility. The next Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, hits the Wii U and Switch on March 3.

Pokemon Sun and Moon’s fourth Global Mission will take place at the Battle Tree

14 Feb

The fourth Global Mission for Pokemon Sun and Moon will kick off in a couple of weeks, and some preliminary information on it has popped up online.

pokemon_sun_moon_pikachu_z_move

According to Serebii (thanks, Siliconera), Pokemon Sun and Moon players will be tasked with earning as many Battle Points as possible at the Battle Tree.

The next Global Mission will start on February 28 and end March 17. Currently, the target score is unknown as Nintendo hasn’t updated the Global Link page as of press time.

Sun and Moon players failed the first and second missions but the third time was a charm

Players were tasked with trading as many Pokemon at the GTS as possible with the goal set at 1 million. Players traded a total of 4,107,702 within the time allotted.

Hopefully, the fourth mission will end in success as well.

Don’t bring MissingNo into Pokemon Sun and Moon if you want to avoid this irreversible glitch

26 Jan

The legacy of the MissingNo glitch carries on in a different way.

The Pokmeon Bank, the app that allows you to bring forward your favourite Pokemon from past games into Pokemon Sun and Moon, went live earlier this week.

However, the old MissingNo glitch appears to still be causing trouble. Reddit users are reporting that the names of their Pokemon are getting switched around upon making a transfer with MissingNo in the box.

The MissingNo glitch first showed up in Red and Blue on the Game Boy (via Polygon), and it basically creates a non-Pokemon that acts like one in fights, not to mention take up a space in the storage box.

Although you can’t bring MissingNo into Sun and Moon, as players who had it found out, it does switch the names of the Pokemon in your transfer box around. The video above from Clyde BlueSnake shows what happens when you trigger the glitch.

Unfortunately, the new names cannot be changed – so don’t do it.

For the next two weeks, Nintendo’s knocking 30% off The Legend of Zelda titles on the EU eShop

24 Jan

A sale specifically for The Legend of Zelda titles will kick off on the European eShop later this week.

Whether the same sale will be offered in North America remains to be seen.

Various 3DS and Wii U games will be on sale for 30% off for My Nintendo users as part of The Legend of Zelda Weeks 2017 Sale.

Gold Points will be handed out for all purchases made in Nintendo eShop as usual. Those who aren’t My Nintendo users can still get a discount on the 3DS HOME Menu themes on sale as well as add-on content.

The sale kicks off January 26 and ends on February 9. Hopefully, one or more of the titles below will scratch your Zelda itch until The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild releases on March 3.

Second Global Mission for Pokemon Sun and Moon has failed

10 Jan

Like its first Global Mission, the second one for Pokemon Sun and Moon has ended in failure.

pokemon_cry_gif

According to Nintendo Life, the second Global Mission for Pokemon Sun and Moon kicked off in December, and tasked players with capturing or defeating 1 million monsters.

This was to be accomplished using the Island Scan functions, which can only be used once every 24 hours. For this event, Nintendo handed out special QR codes which allowed the feature to be used twice per day.

That should have helped matters, but as it turns out, only 661,839 Pokemon were captured.

A consolation prize of 217 or 434 Festival Coins has been handed out to those who participated in the December event. The amount earned will depend on whether the player has their game registered with the Pokemon Global Link system.

Pokemon Sun and Moon’s first Global Mission kicked off in November, and out of the 100 million Pokemon needed to be caught, only 16.4 million were captured.

Game Freak said at the time it would alter future Global Missions targets due to those results.

You can now pre-download Dragon Quest 8 through the North American eShop

7 Jan

Here’s a quick heads up for those who pre-purchased Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King through the Nintendo eShop.

dragon-quest-8

If you live in North America, you can now pre-download the game. You already noticed that by reading the headline, but I have to fill this space with something.

According to Nintendo Everything, the file will take up 24,413 blocks, which is just over 3GB so you may want to make some room if needed.

Dragon Quest 8 is the retelling of Level-5’s classic PS2 RPG and features two new playable characters, more side quests, dungeons and full voice acting during cutscenes which feature important plot details.

There’s much more to it than that though, and you can find out everything we know about it so far through the game’s release date post.

Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King will be released for 3DS in Europe and North America on January 20.

First Global Mission for Pokemon Sun and Moon fails, new mission coming after Christmas

13 Dec

Unfortunately, the first Global Mission for Pokemon Sun and Moon, ended in failure, but a new mission will kick off after Christmas.

pokemon_sad

The global mission which ended yesterday tasked global players with catching 100 million Pokemon. Only 16,423,231 were caught, according to serebii (thanks, Nintendo Everything). Game Freak said it will alter future Global Missions targets due to these results.

If the goal had been accomplished, players would have been handed up to 2,000 Festival Coins. Since the mission failed, the consolation prize of 100 Festival Coins was gifted to players, and 200 FC were awarded to those who are registered on the Global Link.

The second Global Missions will start on December 27 and it tasks players with searching for Pokemon using the Island Scan feature. More information will be announced closer to the mission’s kick off.

Pokemon Sun and Moon files include cut walking feature fans have wanted for years

7 Dec

A Pokemon walking feature may have at one point been on the cards for Pokemon Sun and Moon.

pokemon_sun_and_moon_leaked_cut_animations_1

Pokemon Sun and Moon files have been exposed by dataminers, revealing the existence of the feature that allows Pokemon to walk alongside their trainers in the game’s overworld.

This is a feature fans have been asking for, and it was last seen in the Nintendo DS’ HeartGold and SoulSilver. Twitter user @KazoWAR released footage of various walking and running animations for Pokemon he found in the game files.

These low-polygon variants are not being used in the retail version, which could indicate the walking feature may have existed at one point during development. Here’s a video looking at a few Pokemon using the newly-unearthed data from YouTuber SleepingJirachi (via Polygon):

You can also download all the animations to see for yourself through the link.

Though it’s easy to believe this was simply something developer Game Freak didn’t quite finish in time for launch, some are speculating that these animations are actually there for the rumoured Nintendo Switch port of Sun and Moon, referred to as Pokemon Stars in various leaks. This makes a bit more sense, but we likely won’t find out about it for a while.

Nintendo offering up to $20,000 to anyone who can discover 3DS hardware vulnerabilities

6 Dec

Are you rather good at discovering hardware vulnerabilities? If so, Nintendo wants your help.

new_3ds_01

According to a notice from the company in partnership with HackerOne, Nintendo is offering up to $20,000 for the discovery of critical security vulnerabilities with 3DS systems.

The invitation is open to “highly skilled researchers” to find and address vulnerabilities which could “jeopardize the hardware environment.”

Subjects listed below are examples of what Nintendo is keen on preventing:

Piracy, including:

  • Game application dumping
  • Copied game application execution
  • Cheating, including:
  • Game application modification
  • Save data modification
  • Dissemination of inappropriate content to children

Vulnerabilities:

  • System vulnerabilities regarding the Nintendo 3DS™ family of systems
  • Privilege escalation on ARM11 userland
  • ARM11 kernel takeover
  • ARM9 userland takeover
  • ARM9 kernel takeover
  • Vulnerabilities regarding Nintendo-published applications for the Nintendo 3DS™ family of systems
  • ARM11 userland takeover
  • Hardware vulnerabilities regarding the Nintendo 3DS™ family of systems
  • Low-cost cloning
  • Security key detection via information leaks

Of course, there are terms and conditions to the incentive, and Nintendo reserves the right to choose “whether or not it will address” any reported vulnerabilities.

“Nintendo will pay rewards to the first reporter of qualifying vulnerability information ranging from $100 USD to $20,000 USD. Only one reward per qualifying piece of vulnerability information will be awarded. Nintendo will determine at its discretion whether the vulnerability information qualifies for a reward as well as the amount of any such reward. Nintendo does not disclose how the reward amount is calculated. Vulnerability information that is already known to Nintendo or the public, for example, does not qualify for a reward. Rewards will not be issued to individuals who are on sanction lists, or who are in countries on sanction lists.”

Watch The Game Awards 2016 here – find out who wins, check out the game reveals

1 Dec

The Game Awards 2016 kicks off tonight, and continuing the tradition, we’ll be covering everything that comes out of it.

The Game Awards 2016 takes place kicks off at 6pm PT/9pm ET/2am UK. It will be broadcast live via PSN, Steam, Twitch, Twitter, YouTube, Xbox Live and other services. We’ve embedded the YouTube steam above.

Along with the awards, gameplay debuts from Mass Effect Andromeda and Prey are expected, along with the usual surprises. Maybe even a Duke Nukem reveal.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will make an appearance, and will likely be introduced by Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime as he has been confirmed to take the stage at some point.

Awards will also be handed out, of course. Hideo Kojima will be at the show to accept the Industry Icon Award, and we may possibly get another look at Death Stranding. We expect the bulk of information on his game to be revealed this Saturday during Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2016. He will also be hosting a panel, so expect more on that end this weekend.

Game of the Year contenders this year are: Doom, Inside, Overwatch, Titanfall 2 and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Last year, the honor went to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which also took Best RPG and CD Projekt RED took home the Best Studio award.

The game’s Blood and Wine expansion is up for Best RPG this year.

omg

VG247 has been covering the annual game awards since 2009, when it was known as the Video Game Awards and hosted by Spike TV. It was filled with many cringe worthy moments, honestly, and one of the most memorable for me was in 2009 when Mike Tyson took the stage with the cast of Jersey Shore – which debuted that very month. He at one point turned to them and said: “Who are you again?” Or something like that.

Then there was 2008 when Tenacious D, Jack Black and Kyle Gass, showed up in underwear, shooting sparks from their groin (image credit). Good times.

Back in 2013, Spike renamed the VGAs opting for VGX instead. We, meaning me, were rather pleased with the name change due to the dyslexia factor which resulted in many a humorous tweet calling it the “VAG” awards. Then again, to tolerate all the nonsense in between announcements, I had to be half-snookered just to get through the liveblog so that may have been a conrtibutor. Thank goodness we don’t liveblog the show anymore. But, it’s also the end of an era of sorts for me, because this year, Brenna is handling things, so I won’t be joining you for all the revelry. You’re welcome.

Moving on, after Spike dumped the show, Geoff Keighley started his own with industry backers in 2014, dubbing it The Game Awards. The inaugural event debuted in December of that year, with Dragon Age: Inquisition taking home Game of the Year.

Anyway, as usual, expect all the important announcements, videos and award winners to be posted on the site. You can also expect a round up post full of links after all is said and done, because things tend to get lost on the front page for this sort thing.

Again, The Game Awards 2016 kicks off at 6pm PT/9pm ET/2am UK. Watch along with us, and enjoy.

Pokemon Sun and Moon shifted 1.5 million units in Europe during release week

30 Nov

Pokemon Sun and Moon is doing well in Europe, and is the most successful launch for the series in the region, ever.

pokemon_happy (2)

That’s according to Nintendo which announced today that Pokemon Sun and Moon sold 1.5 million units its first week on the market.

Included in the figure are UK numbers, which total 368,000 copies. According to GfK Chart Tracker, Pokemon Sun debuted at number three on the weekly charts, and Pokemon Moon at number during last week’s reporting period.

According to the the chart tracking firm, if both titles were combined, the latest entry would have debuted in top spot. Instead, that honor went to FIFA 17, which was followed by Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare at number two.

Figures for North America have yet to be announced, but with the NPDs coming up soon, we expect Nintendo to release unit sales – if not beforehand.

In Japan, the games moved 1.9 million copies during the first three days of availability, and this week moved an additional 375,665 units.
