EA PS4 Publisher Sale ends on Feb. 28 – get discounts on Battlefield 1, FIFA 17, more

25 Feb

EA is hosting a Publisher Sale on the PlayStation Store, and if you’re an Xbox player don’t worry: you’ll get your chance next week.

Apparently, the sale has been going on since February 21, but for some reason we are just now aware of it. Probably because many of the titles are part of the PS Store Critics Sale.

But, the good news is the sale runs until February 28, so you still have plenty of time to hop on the discount train.

Some of the deals are rather nice, actually, such as the FIFA 17 Super Deluxe Edition which normally runs $99.99, and is on sale for up to 67% off at $69.99. The standard and Deluxe Edition of the sports title are also on sale.

The standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions of Battlefield 1 are up to 50% off. The latter version comes with the Battlefield 1 Premium Pass, three themed packs, five Battlepacks and more for $79.99 instead of the regular $129.99, so you’re saving 40%.

Standard, Deluxe and Super Deluxe versions of Madden NFL 17 and NHL 17 are also up to 67% off. Titanfall 2 is on sale for 50% off (60% off if a Plus sub), and this includes both the standard and Deluxe Edition.

UFC 2, Star Wars: Battlefront, Battlefield 4 and Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 are also on sale.

Again, if you are a PS Plus sub, you can take an extra 10% some of the offers available.

Xbox One users can look forward discounted EA titles February 28 through March 13. We’ll let you know when the sale is live once Microsoft updates its Deals with Gold notice.

22 Feb

The 800 megabyte FIFA 17 update 1.07 is now available today on Xbox One and Playstation 4, and while it doesn’t have much to begin with, the update will at least help to improve a number of different parts of the game that haven’t been fixed since the game came out in September. See Also: […]

Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game of January 2017, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, other heavy-hitters play musical chairs

17 Feb

The NPD group has released hardware and software figures for January 2017 and it should come as no surprise that PlayStation 4 and Resident Evil 7 topped the respective sectors.

January 2017 NPD at a glance

Resident Evil 7 tops software charts

PS4 was best-selling console

PC software spend declined 12% year-over-year

All categories – accessories, hardware, software – down 4% year-over-year

Compare month-on-month: December 2016

Compare year-over-year: January 2016

While hardware sales declined, software was up 14% to $313 million. NPD attributed the increase to Resident Evil 7’s release, especially when comparing the year-over-year (yoy) release slates.

It’s also worth noting Resident Evil 7 was only on the market for five days when the NPD reporting period ended.

“With only five days in the market, Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game in January,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “The last time Capcom had the best-selling game of the month (in dollar sales) was in March 2009 with Resident Evil 5.”

First-person shooters Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 were still two of the best-selling games for the month, and neither title has fallen off the chart since release in fall 2016.

Overwatch also returned after dropping off the NPD software list in October.

The rise in sales could possibly be attributed to various discount offers or the Overwatch Year of the Rooster event; however, that’s just conjecture on our part as NPD didn’t elaborate on why Overwatch was once again charting. It was, however, one of the best-selling games of 2016 per NPD’s yearly report in January.

Action titles Grand Theft Auto 5 and Watch Dogs 2 also remained on the chart, while sports titles Madden NFL 17 and FIFA 17 remained popular with US consumers as well.

PC software came in at $16 million, a 12% decline yoy from $18 million.

NPD Software Top Ten January 2017

You’ll notice not much changed on the chart since December 2016, as the heavy hitters played musical chairs and that’s about it.

The biggest changes were the entry of new releases Resident Evil 7 and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue – the second best-selling PS4 title for the month.

Pokemon Sun and Moon and Final Fantasy 15 fell off the chart, and again, Overwatch reentered it.

The full NPD software chart is below, but keep in mind not all digital stores report sales data. Some publishers who sell through the PlayStation and Xbox Stores report data, but others do not. For example: Microsoft, Sony and Blizzard (Battle.net) do not report first-party sales.

  1. Resident Evil 7 (PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  3. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  4. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  5. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (PS4)
  7. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Watch Dogs 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  9. Overwatch (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  10. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

This month, NPD also started reporting catalog sales of titles from the first six months of availability – starting with month seven (thanks, MCV). The winning publisher in the category for January 2017 was Take-Two and it was also the top publisher for 2016. NPD attributed this to continued sales of GTA 5.

NPD Hardware January 2017

Last week, the initial NPD report had PS4 topping hardware followed by Xbox One – which according to Microsoft enjoyed year-over-year (yoy) growth compared to January 2016.

PS4 sold the most units, with Xbox One coming in second place, and Nintendo’s Nintendo Classic Mini: NES in third.

“The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware (in units sold) during January 2017,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “And for the fourth consecutive month, PlayStation 4 Slim System 500GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Bundle was the top-selling PS4 sku in terms of units sold.”

For the month of January 2017, hardware totaled $127 million, a decline of 19% yoy compared to $157 million in 2016.

Accessories declined 17% yoy to $155, with toys-to-life skus (ex: Skylanders, amiibo, Lego Dimensions) showing the biggest decline.

Total spent in the US on accessories, hardware and software for the month January hit $611 million. While that’s indeed as large figure, it’s 4% less compared to $637 million spent in 2016.

NPD said the lower figure was due to a decline in hardware sales and general lack of growth.

Madden 17 predicts another Super Bowl win for the New England Patriots

1 Feb

Madden NFL has predicted the New England Patriots will win Super Bowl 51, beating the Atlanta Falcons by three points.

Every year, EA Sports runs a simulation to predict who will win the Super Bowl with the latest iteration of Madden NFL.

Using Madden 17, the LI Game Simulation predicted the New England Patriots would defeat the Atlanta Falcons 27-24 in Super Bowl 51.

In 2015, the simulation not only accurately predicted the winner, but the the final score as well, which was a first.

If Madden 17 is correct and the Patriots win on Sunday, the franchise will be 11/12.

That’s better than most animals such as chickens and mules, and getting rather close to Paul the Octopus’ record.

We’ll have to wait until Sunday to find out if Madden NFL 17 was spot on or not.

Super Bowl 51 kicks off February 5, at 6:30 pm on FOX and is being held at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Personally, we’ll be watching Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet instead, occasionally checking in, hoping Madden 17 is wrong and the Falcons win.

New Need for Speed game also coming before the end of March 2018

1 Feb

Need for Speed helps round out a suddenly busier looking year for EA.

Need for Speed will return sometime during EA’s next financial year, which ends March 31 2018, the publisher said during today’s financials.

It’s even possible the new Need for Speed may release in calendar 2017, as the publisher previously predicted.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson said the untitled new racer boasts “ambitious and more competitive online gameplay”, which presumably means even more connected features than past Need for Speed games like Rivals – perhaps something along the lines of The Crew or Forza Horizon.

No further clues were provided, but since this is Need for Speed you can probably fill in the blanks. More cars? Shinier graphics? More impressive settings? The racing genre is generally pretty predictable.

What with Need for Speed and this new BioWare multiplayer action IP and all, EA’s FY 2018 release schedule is suddenly looking a lot healthier than it did a few weeks ago when EA Play at E3 2017 was announced.

The last core Need for Speed game was the 2015 reboot, the first to be developed entirely by Ghost Games as Criterion moved on to other projects.

Skate 4 isn’t happening, burn Twitter to the ground

1 Feb

Skate 4 is not real. Try not to trip over your lower lip.

Skate 4 is not in development at EA. Sorry.

CEO Andrew Wilson explicitly denied the long awaited sequel after an investor asked about the possibility during the publisher’s Q3 2017 financials today, saying EA is “not presently making Skate 4”. He even made a joke about how disappointing this is to CFO Blake Jorgensen, although this was not a time for levity, but for deep, deep mourning.

We got our hopes up a little bit on this front after an EA community manager made a mysterious Skate 4 tweet just ahead of financials. Alas, it doesn’t seem to have been anything more than the expression of a personal wish – or perhaps an attempt to drum up interest in support of an internal pitch.

Who knows? Maybe EA’s community and PR teams are even now harvesting every article and engagement metric on behalf of a studio wanting to bring Skate 4 before the green light panels.

Or maybe we all just really wanted to believe. Skate 4, we’ll never give up on you. You hear us? Never – although after the pratfall that was the latest Tony Hawk, it’s not hugely surprising EA’s a bit wary of the genre.

The last Skate game was 2010’s Skate 3. All three main series entries released in quick succession on PS3 and Xbox 360, and are as famous for hilarious bugs as they are for the genuinely enjoyable sandboxes they presented. The closest thing we have to a modern Skate game is Goat Simulator, despite regular fan campaigning.

New game Bioware slated for end of March 2018, Battlefield 1 player base 50% larger than Battlefield 4

31 Jan

Electronic Arts has reported its Q3 2017 fiscal results for the period ended December 31, 2016, attributing the banner quarter to its digital services, FIFA 17 and of course, Battlefield 1. The firm also drops hints on a new Bioware title.

EA said during the call Bioware has a new action title in the works which will “disrupt” the action genre and change the way players “play an action title.” It is slated for release sometime around the end of March 2018. E3 2017 announcement? Place your bets now.

According to CEO Andrew Wilson on the call, the game is a wholly owned new IP. The “it’s an action-adventure title, not an RPG,” but more of a “genre melding” game, per CEO Andrew Wilson. He said to expect the same storyline progression and character customization players are used to with Bioware.

It’s been in the works since 2012 and features “a new universe full of new characters, stories, and gameplay.”

Battlefield 1 was the biggest Battlefield launch ever, with EA saying the player base was 50% larger than that of Battlefield 4 during the same launch quarters.

During the call to investors, the firm reiterated continued support for Titanfall 2 and also reiterated that there’s plenty of content on the way to keep players busy.

CFO Blake Jorgensen also reiterated the title sold less copies than expected, but Battlefield 1 sold better than projected. That said, Battlefield 1 was a “higher margin title” compared to Titanfall 2, which is a third-party title from Respawn Entertainment.

That said, the firm called Titanfall 2 one of the best games of this console generation and of the year.

The firm also said FIFA 17 was the “best-selling console title in the world,” during 2016 with more than 10 million please having played The Journey single-player mode in the football title.

EA reiterated that the next Star Wars Battlefront will be bigger with more heroes, a new single-player campaign, and more locations. DICE Motive and Criterion are all working on the game, which was previously reported.

Digital sales were nothing to sneeze at: $2.86 billion was reported for the trailing-twelve-month period which represents 60% of total net sales, up 18% year-over-year (yoy). As you can see in the chart about, the majority of digital sales came from consoles.

You will also note in the chart below, that DLC was the largest contributor to digital purchases with full game downloads coming in second.

“With the top console games and most-downloaded mobile portfolio in the industry for Q3, Electronic Arts is growing, engaging and exciting a global community of players,” said CEO Andrew Wilson in a prepared statement. “We will continue to push the boundaries of play, with stunning new titles like Mass Effect: Andromeda, global competitive gaming tournaments and more amazing experiences coming in the year ahead.”

For the quarter, net revenue was $1.4 billion (up 7.4%) from $1.07 billion yoy. As mentioned above, 60% can be attributed to digital, or $685 million (up 20.4%) compared to $569 million yoy.

We’ll have more figures and some nice quotes for you, hopefully, when the call to investors starts.

EA Is Honoring Chapecoense With Free Kit And Crest In FIFA 17

1 Dec

On November 29, a tragic event took place in the world of football. Club Chapecoense were flying to Colombia for the final of the Brazilian cup, but their plane went down; only six people managed to survive. Now, EA has decided to honor Chapecoense in FIFA 17 Ultimate Team, giving free kit and crest of the team […]

FIFA 17 players awarded free kit and crest, so they can show respect for a team devastated by an airplane disaster

1 Dec

FIFA 17 players can honour fallen athletes by donning the Chapecoense kit.

FIFA 17 players have been awarded the crest and kit of Brazilian football club Chapecoense for free, following the deaths of most of the club’s players in an airplane disaster.

The tribute was shared by Reddit user psgabraham. In the notification, EA Sports suggests FIFA 17 players wear the kit “in support of the friends, family and fans of Chapecoense”.

The free crests cannot be traded in FIFA 17, but many players are attempting to hock their duplicates – possibly in an attempt to leverage the tragedy for personal gain. Pretty low! It’s probably a good thing Chapecoense players aren’t available in FIFA Ultimate Team.

The Chapecoense team was onboard a flight that crashed in Colombia this week, on its way to a Copa Sudamericana (South American Cup) final – the biggest match in the club’s history. According to the BBC, just six of the 77 crew and passengers aboard the plane survived the tragedy.

19 Chapecoense players were killed, two remain in critical condition, and one has had a leg amputated with a possibility he may lose the other, too. Atletico Nacional, due to play Chapecoense in the final, has offered to concede the match, and Brazilian teams have called on local football authorities to prevent the club’s deregulation in the wake of the disaster.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined, and Colombian authorities are still working to recover the bodies of the players and the 52 other victims of the crash. Brazil is in the midst of multiple days of national mourning.

FIFA 17 is free to play this weekend on PS4 and Xbox One

23 Nov

You’ll get a chance to try out FIFA 17 for free this weekend.

fifa 17 juv-gameplay-lg-2x

EA has announced that it’s making a free trial for FIFA 17 available for all on PS4 and Xbox One this weekend.

The trial gives you access to the full game, including the new story mode The Journey, Ultimate Team, career mode, and more. There are some limitations, though.

First, if you’re an EA Access subscriber on Xbox One who already finished up your ten hours of the pre-launch trial, you won’t be eligible for this. In addition, only a limited portion of The Journey mode will be available on either platform, but you’ll get unrestricted access to the rest of the modes.

EA said you’ll be able to play for up to ten hours on Xbox One, but did not mention if the same limitation carries over to PS4. Whatever it is, the promotion will kick off Thursday, November 24 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm GMT.

You’ll have until 11:59pm PT / 2:59am ET / 7:59am GMT on Sunday, November 27, before it wraps up. Any progress you make will carry over to the full game if you do buy it.

It’s also worth noting that FIFA 17 is on sale almost everywhere, including digitally on Xbox Live, and no doubt soon on PSN. Black Friday sales usually last until Monday, too, so you’re covered in case you need to buy it after the trial is over.

Total Battlefield 1 player base for the first week was nearly double that of Battlefield 4

1 Nov

Over 43 million people played EA Sports and console and mobile games during the firm’s Q2 2017 financial reporting period, and folks are still playing mobile hit Star Wars Galaxy Heroes 2.5 hours per day. And Battlefield 1 content on YouTube was viewed over 100 million times from announcement to launch. Lordie that’s a lot.

EA Quarterly Comparisons

EA Q1 2017
EA Q2 2016
EA Q2 2015

That’s according to an infographic released alongside the latest financial report, which you can look over in the gallery below.

In the report, EA said the total Battlefield 1 player base during launch week was nearly double that of Battlefield 4, and continues to grow.

In the first week of FIFA 17, 20% more players were engaged in the game compared to the first week of FIFA 16 last year and nearly 2/3 of all FIFA 17 players have engaged in “The Journey” story mode – and across 183 countries no less.

Net sales from FIFA, Madden NFL and Hockey Ultimate Team are collectively up 15% for the trailing twelve months compared to last year.

Actually figures on Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 were not provided, nor did EA discuss it during the call to investors. Titanfall 2 was released after the quarter ended, and results for FIFA 17 weren’t included in the report as it was released just four days before the reporting period ended.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson said Titanfall 2 sales aren’t being cannibalized by Battlefield 1. The shooters are different, can both exist in the market, and are different enough to share retail shelves.

The next Star Wars Battlefront game is still set for next year, and in fiscal 2018 the firm is hoping the Star Wars action title, which is the one said to be in the works with Amy Henig, will be released.

The company is also excited about PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Scorpio, as they are a great options for consumers, according to CFO Blake Jorgensen. As it stands, according to his math, sales of current-gen consoles are 33% higher than previous generations, and as stated previously, they expect the install base to hit around 100 million by the end of the year.

In March, Jorgensen said sales of current-generation consoles were around 60 million units combined for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

PS4 sales currently stand at 47.4 million worldwide. Since Microsoft stopped providing Xbox One sales figures staring with its Q4 2014 report, unit sales for the console aren’t publicly known. The last figure provided was on December 3, 2014 during a shareholder presentation. The firm revealed the console had sold 10 million units worldwide.

On the money end, net sales for the company for the trailing twelve-month period are up 8% year-over-year to $4.507 billion.

For the quarter, net revenue was $898 million, and 63% of that was digital, or $566 million.
