Modern Warfare Remastered kicks off St. Paddy’s Day celebrations with Shamrock & Awe event and free stuff

14 Mar

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered’s St. Patrick’s Day seasonal event brings lots of loot, and a new character with it.

Activision has announced the first seasonal event of the year for Call of Duty, and the theme is, of course, St. Patrick’s Day.

Operation: Shamrock & Awe is a three week event bringing free supply drops, a new, free map, two free camos, and a new character with it.

modern warfare remastered seasonal camos

The emerald green supply drops are capped at one per week when you log in, and they don’t stack, so be sure to download them by 11:59pm PDT every week between now and the end of the event.

The new map is essentially Downpour with a little added sunshine and a dash of Irish charm. Also there’s a rainbow.

Completing the in-game challenged over the duration of the next three weeks will let you earn two exclusive St. Patrick’s Day-themed weapon camos, described as “the Shamrockin’ ‘Folium’ and the rainbowtized ‘Prism.’”

The challenges vary across weapon classes and won’t be available after the event.

There are three new St. Paddy’s themed collections, including reticules, camos, calling cards, and emblems. Completing the Luck collection will unlock a new character, the Leprechaun will get you a Shillelagh melee weapon, and Pot o’Gold rewards you with a unique calling card.

What’s more, if you amass all three collections, you’ll unlock Darren ‘Graves’ Cosgrave as a playable character. He’s only available for the duration of the event so get collecting.

Operation: Shamrock & Awe is live right now and wraps up on April 3 at 12.01am PDT.

Scottish pro Call of Duty player has made more than £40K from competing in tournaments

14 Mar

And Scottish newspaper learns that eSports is a thing.

mark bryceland

Scottish online news site, Daily Record, recently interviewed pro Call of Duty player Mark Bryceland, who has earned over £40,000 in his career so far.

The 22-year old told the site that his parents hadn’t always been “massively supportive,” wanting him to focus on school when he was younger.

“But now they are extremely supportive,” he says. They know it’s a job.”

According to his profile, he competes playing Black Ops 3, Black Ops 2, Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Infinite Warfare.

Bryceland’s ranking amongst pro players in the UK in terms of earnings is #28, with the top player, Craig Rathbone, raking in just over £182k.

Globally, Bryceland sits at #982, with Dota 2 player, Saahil Arora, topping the charts as the highest earner, with over £2 million earned.

“Mark says he worked hard for years to get to the top of his ‘eSport’” reads the Daily Record, “and trains hard every day to hone his skills.”

“The jump from playing with my friends to where I am now didn’t happen overnight,” explains Bryceland. “It’s just recently that I’ve started receiving the fruits of my labour.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered maps Chinatown, Creek, more return in The Variety Map Pack

7 Mar

The Variety Map Pack will be released for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered players later this month.

It contains four popular maps from the original game, each enhanced to match the added shine given to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered.

The Variety Map Pack contains the following four maps:

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered_Variety Map Pack_Broadcast

Broadcast: Based on the TV station from the campaign mission “Charlie Don’t Surf”, this map provides a unique blend of confined corridors and wide-open spaces. Outside the station, the parking lot contains long sightlines, but once inside, cramped hallways and a computer-cluttered broadcast room provide ample close-range combat opportunities.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered_Variety Map Pack_Chinatown

Chinatown: Set in a foggy downtown district, this nighttime map is lit up by flickering neon signs and a full moon. A re-imagining of the original Call of Duty multiplayer map “Carentan”, players will need to be careful on these streets, as almost every building in the map can be occupied, providing perfect cover for enemies waiting for a chance to line you up in their sights.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered_Variety Map Pack_Creek

Creek: Set in a wide-open village ravaged by combat where concealment is the difference between life and death, a gaping ravine divides this map into two. Open clearings with sheer cliff faces and ample forested cover make this map ideal for snipers and long-range firefights.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered_Variety Map Pack_Killhouse

Killhouse: A small training warehouse filled with various building mock ups that feature soft and hard cover points. Expect fast-paced and fierce firefights for maximum close-quarters chaos.

The pack will run $14.99 or your regional equivalent. It also comes with ten Rare Supply Drops, which Activision said represents a $20 bonus value.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered Variety Map Pack is available to pre-order now for the PlayStation 4.

It will release for the console on March 21, with other platforms to come later.

COD Infinite Warfare_MP_Frost 3_WM

Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game of January 2017, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, other heavy-hitters play musical chairs

17 Feb

The NPD group has released hardware and software figures for January 2017 and it should come as no surprise that PlayStation 4 and Resident Evil 7 topped the respective sectors.

resident_evil_7_main_site

January 2017 NPD at a glance

Resident Evil 7 tops software charts

PS4 was best-selling console

PC software spend declined 12% year-over-year

All categories – accessories, hardware, software – down 4% year-over-year

Compare month-on-month: December 2016

Compare year-over-year: January 2016

While hardware sales declined, software was up 14% to $313 million. NPD attributed the increase to Resident Evil 7’s release, especially when comparing the year-over-year (yoy) release slates.

It’s also worth noting Resident Evil 7 was only on the market for five days when the NPD reporting period ended.

“With only five days in the market, Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game in January,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “The last time Capcom had the best-selling game of the month (in dollar sales) was in March 2009 with Resident Evil 5.”

First-person shooters Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 were still two of the best-selling games for the month, and neither title has fallen off the chart since release in fall 2016.

Overwatch also returned after dropping off the NPD software list in October.

The rise in sales could possibly be attributed to various discount offers or the Overwatch Year of the Rooster event; however, that’s just conjecture on our part as NPD didn’t elaborate on why Overwatch was once again charting. It was, however, one of the best-selling games of 2016 per NPD’s yearly report in January.

Action titles Grand Theft Auto 5 and Watch Dogs 2 also remained on the chart, while sports titles Madden NFL 17 and FIFA 17 remained popular with US consumers as well.

PC software came in at $16 million, a 12% decline yoy from $18 million.

PS4_console_big

NPD Software Top Ten January 2017

You’ll notice not much changed on the chart since December 2016, as the heavy hitters played musical chairs and that’s about it.

The biggest changes were the entry of new releases Resident Evil 7 and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue – the second best-selling PS4 title for the month.

Pokemon Sun and Moon and Final Fantasy 15 fell off the chart, and again, Overwatch reentered it.

The full NPD software chart is below, but keep in mind not all digital stores report sales data. Some publishers who sell through the PlayStation and Xbox Stores report data, but others do not. For example: Microsoft, Sony and Blizzard (Battle.net) do not report first-party sales.

  1. Resident Evil 7 (PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  3. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  4. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  5. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (PS4)
  7. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Watch Dogs 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  9. Overwatch (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  10. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

This month, NPD also started reporting catalog sales of titles from the first six months of availability – starting with month seven (thanks, MCV). The winning publisher in the category for January 2017 was Take-Two and it was also the top publisher for 2016. NPD attributed this to continued sales of GTA 5.

NPD Hardware January 2017

Last week, the initial NPD report had PS4 topping hardware followed by Xbox One – which according to Microsoft enjoyed year-over-year (yoy) growth compared to January 2016.

PS4 sold the most units, with Xbox One coming in second place, and Nintendo’s Nintendo Classic Mini: NES in third.

“The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware (in units sold) during January 2017,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “And for the fourth consecutive month, PlayStation 4 Slim System 500GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Bundle was the top-selling PS4 sku in terms of units sold.”

For the month of January 2017, hardware totaled $127 million, a decline of 19% yoy compared to $157 million in 2016.

Accessories declined 17% yoy to $155, with toys-to-life skus (ex: Skylanders, amiibo, Lego Dimensions) showing the biggest decline.

Total spent in the US on accessories, hardware and software for the month January hit $611 million. While that’s indeed as large figure, it’s 4% less compared to $637 million spent in 2016.

NPD said the lower figure was due to a decline in hardware sales and general lack of growth.

Proceeds from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remaster’s next DLC will go to military veterans

15 Feb

Picking up the next cosmetic DLC release for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered will directly benefit US military veterans.

The Call of Duty Endowment Brass personalization pack includes a new stars-and-stripes weapon camo, along with a new reticle, emblem, and calling card. No price has been announced as of yet.

Proceeds will go directly to the Call of Duty Endowment, an Activision-owned charity that helps find employment for veterans. According to their site, the unemployment rate among young veterans is 2.6x the national average, at 13%.

In 2016, the Call of Duty Endowment placed 31,000 veterans in jobs.

Activision studios Infinity Ward, Beenox, others hit with layoffs

11 Feb

A round of layoffs has hit Activision studios.

call_of_duty_infinite_warfare-2

While layoffs are common in the industry, many industries for that matter, it seems rather odd to hear about redundancies when a company recently announced better than expected revenues.

According to Kotaku, the publisher has laid off 5% of it’s workforce. This includes folks holding positions at the corporate office along with Beenox, Infinity Ward and other internal studios.

An official statement sent to the site from Activision confirmed it was “realigning” its resources to support upcoming projects, and “adapt to the accelerating transition to digital.”

Per the report, 20 employees were let go from Infinity Ward. While Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare did not meet the publisher’s sales expectations especially when compared to Black Ops 3, the franchise as whole did well during the last quarter.

That said, it’s worth noting Activision mentioned during its investors call earlier this week the 2017 entry in the franchise will take “Call of Duty back to its roots.”

Along with redundancies hitting Infinity Ward, the in-house QA end of Beenox has been shuttered. A source speaking with Gamasutra stated there are still 150 developers working at the latter.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered update 1.08 delivers over 170 new loot items – full patch notes

9 Feb

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered continues to expand with new content, breathing new life into a ten year old game.

call_of_duty_modern_warfare_remastered_e3_2016_Bog_1

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered may have been released as a sort of glorified collector’s edition add-on, but the support from Raven Software is more what you’d expect from a standalone new release.

The latest update, patch 1.08, adds a stack of new Depot content to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, including four new weapon kits. Each will be available via collection bounties, so you’ll need to gather or craft all the matching items to unlock the new gear.

  • Huntsman
This Sniper Class Weapon Kit gives your sniper rifles the field-ready look of a working class weapon. For example, your sniper rifle can look camouflaged like a ghillie suit or covered in duct tape.
  • Lawman
Bring a bit of the Old West to Modern Warfare with this Shotgun Class Weapon Kit. You’ll feel like a gunslinger when your shotguns have the look and feel of high-class weapons from Western Americana, complete with filigreed details and wood stocks.
  • Battle-scarred
If you like to get up close and personal, then the SMG is probably one of your workhorse weapons. The Battle-Scarred Weapon Kit will make your weapons look like they have been through many a firefight, scars and all.
  • Czar
The Czar Weapon Kit provides the look of pure gold to your LMGs, putting the bling in your loadout and onto the field of battle. These golden guns are over the top, flashy, and deadly as ever.

There are also three new weapon collection bounties, and Raven has asked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered to provide feedback on how they fit into the sandbox; it doesn’t want to upset a decade-old balance too much.

  • Kamchatka-12
This is a fully-automatic, 12-gauge shotgun of Russian origin, and features an 8-round detachable box magazine.
  • XM-LAR
This fully automatic assault rifle comes from the European theater, and utilizes 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges in a 30-round detachable box.
  • .44 Magnum
This is the classic .44 Magnum six-round revolver, featuring a stylized military grip and signature long barrel.

Raven has also added two new melee weapons to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. Gladiator is a sword based on the Roman legionary’s standard-issue gladius blade, while the Hatchetman is a military axe.

The bulk of the update is customisation, so you’ll also find four new weapon camo sets with 39 new weapon camos total, 31 new calling card options, 39 new emblems, and 39 new reticles in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered once you’ve grabbed the patch.

Here are the full patch notes for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered update 1.08:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered update 1.08 brings new weapon kits and customisation items

7 Feb

The patch notes for Modern Warfare Remastered’s latest update have been released and there are a few new bits and bobs to look foward to.

call of duty modern warfare remastered

Patch 1.08 for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered went live today and along with the usual bug fixes and tweaks, the update has added over 170 new items according to PlayStation Lifestyle.

“Today, we’re excited to support Modern Warfare Remastered with more content, and introduce even more customization items into Modern Warfare Remastered,” reads an Activision blog post.

“Personalization continues to be enjoyed by the community, and we’ve all seen how much players enjoy building the gameplay experience that they want, which is something that wasn’t really possible during the original release. So we are stoked to deliver to fans plenty of options to customize, personalize and continue the fun with these new items.”

Editorial Manager, Kevin Kelly, went on to address gameplay balance and weapons, and announced the addition of “three modern era guns the Kamchatka-12 (automatic shotgun), XM-LAR (assault rifle) and .44 Magnum (pistol).

“Like every other weapon, they each have strengths and weaknesses to ensure proper game balance, and through extensive testing we know players will have a blast.

“As a studio, the balance remains our #1 priority. And just like many of the new items we’ve brought in, you can obtain them by completing a collection of items you acquire with your Parts, or through Supply Drops.”

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s first DLC pack is out today and the trailer will have your trigger finger itching like crazy

31 Jan

The first Infinite Warfare DLC pack is here and in case you weren’t fully committed to picking it up, Activision unleashed one hell of a trailer.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s Sabotage DLC pack drops today and the trailer looks fantastic.

Sabotage was announced in December last year and brings with it four new maps and more zombies.

Rave in the Redwoods got its own zombie oriented trailer last week but today’s trailer gives us a look at the all-new multiplayer maps including Dominion, a re-imagining of the classic Modern Warfare 2 map Afghan, set on Mars.

The trailer also showed off Neon’s digital city, Noir’s Brooklyn at night, and Renaissance’s idyllic Venice.

Sabotage is available on PS4 today as part of the $50 season pass or for $15 as a standalone.

PC and Xbox One release dates still haven’t been announced.

Look, here’s some tweets to prove what we say is true:

New DLC for Infinite Warfare drops next week, the 90s flavoured Rave in the Redwoods.

The double XP weekend runs Friday 10am PST to Monday Jan 30, 10am PST so you have no excuses for not taking advantage.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s Rave in the Redwoods is definitely set in the 90’s – there’s plaid, glowsticks, and someone says “gnarly”

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare took us to the future, but Zombies – ah! Zombies takes us to our regrettable past.

The first Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare DLC pack arrives on PS4 next week, bringing with it a new chapter in the Zombies journey.

Continuing the story from the Zombies in Spaceland, the latest episode of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s co-op horde more is set in an abandoned campground in the 1990’s, which has been used as the site of a rave. The ravers are now zombies, in a heavy-handed metaphor that baby boomers will enjoy.

Our four heroes make dated quips and wear terrible outfits as they navigate this hostile environment, aided in their endeavours by the helpful glow of the rave accessories worn by the zombies. They also take party drugs of some sort, meet director Kevin Smith, and fend off Slasher, the obligatory serial killer. And to think you complained about Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare going to the future. The future is great: nobody says “gnarly” non-ironically. Let’s go back! Forward. Whatever.

Not a Zombies or 1990’s slasher film fan? No worries, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – Sabotage adds four new multiplayer maps and more.

Look for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – Sabotage on PS4 on January 31, for $15 standalone or as part of the season pass. PC and Xbox One release dates have not been announced.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was the best-selling game of 2016 despite all your protests – but Battlefield 1 was hot on its heels

Call of Duty won the year. Again.

December and full-year 2016 NPD at a glance

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare tops both software charts.

PS4 dominates hardware in December.

Year total PC software spend grew 5%.

All other categories down year-on-year for both December and 2016 as a whole.

Compare month-on-month: November 2016

Compare year-on-year: December 2015

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare predictably topped both the December 2016 and 2016 full year charts in the latest edition of NPD Group’s monthly report, which tracks new sales in the US only.

The NPD’s Mat Piscatella said this is the ninth consecutive year Call of Duty has topped the all-formats December sales chart.

Battlefield 1 came in second place, and actually generated 10% more dollar revenue than Star Wars Battlefront in December 2015 – a pretty amazing feat given the latter’s brand recognition.

Looking at individual platform charts, however, Final Fantasy 15 was the best-selling game on PS4, and enjoyed the “best console launch month in the history of the franchise” with 19% more new physical units sold than Final Fantasy 13, and 54% more in total dollar revenue including digital.

In portables, the winner was, of course, Pokemon Sun and Moon. The NPD said the twin games have sold over 4.21 million units life to date, which is the best the franchise has done since 2007’s Pokemon Diamond and Pearl combined with 4.25 million units. Let’s see if Sun and Moon can overtake it.

NPD software top ten December 2016

Here’s the NPD’s chart for the month of December 2016. It’s worth noting that Pokemon Sun and Moon both charted individually rather than as a combined title, and that the NPD doesn’t have access to digital sales data on Nintendo titles. The RPG may well have been an even bigger deal than the chart suggests, then.

You’ll notice Watch Dogs 2 held its place in the chart despite a lot of murmuring about its performance after its November release. It didn’t turn up in the full-year chart but it’s certainly not a non-entity.

  1. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Final Fantasy 15 (PS4, Xbox One)
  3. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  4. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  5. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Watch Dogs 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  7. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Pokemon Sun (3DS)
  9. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  10. Pokemon Moon (3DS)

NPD software top ten full year 2016

This chart is for 2016 as a whole. As usual, sports games and shooters dominated the full-year charts, and Grand Theft Auto 5 refuses to give up its hold. The long sales tail on Call of Duty each year means Black Ops 3 inevitably made an appearance.

Don’t be too concerned for Final Fantasy 15 in last place; it released very late in the year, and did so well on the December chart, that it’s probably doing just fine as its sales tail extends through January and beyond.

Again, the NPD doesn’t have digital sales info for Battle.net titles, so Overwatch may rank much more highly than the chart suggests.

  1. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  3. The Division (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  4. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  5. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  7. Overwatch (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  9. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  10. Final Fantasy 15 (PS4, Xbox One)

PS4 dominates hardware in 2016

As previously reported, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One in December 2016.

The NPD said the PS4 Slim 500GB Uncharted 4 bundle was the best-selling console of the month with 1.2 million sales, while the PS4 Pro accounted for 18% of all November and December PS4 sales.

Meanwhile, the Xbox One enjoyed a good month with a 10% unit sales increase, and Nintendo shifted “an additional 4% of 3DS systems thanks to the heightened demand for Pokemon”.

Unfortunately, this did not translate to dollar growth as the lower prices of hardware a few years on can’t stack up with figures generated closer to launch.

“Although the combined ARP for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems decreased by 15%, consumers bought 7% fewer units,” Piscatella said.

As a result, overall hardware sales for the month fell 20% year-on-year, while hardware sales for the full year fell 24% on 2015’s figures.

General figures

Total industry spend for the month of December fell 15% year-on-year to $2.78 billion.

Console and portable software fell 12% to $1.19 billion, while PC software fell 13% to $45.3 million. Hardware fell 20% to $994.9 million, and accessories dropped 15% to $547.6 million.

For the year total, industry spend spend fell 12% from 2015’s figures, to $12.1 billion.

Console and portable software fell 6% to $5.79 billion, while PC software grew 5% to $333.8 million. Hardware fell 24% to 3.68 billion, and accessories dropped 6% to $2.35 billion.

Just to touch on accessories, the NPD said the toys-to-life category saw a whopping 50% decline which was largely responsible for the overall category drop. Only LEGO Dimensions saw growth, with Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Amiibo all drying up. Trend over?

As ever, bear in mind that these figures are missing stacks of revenue sources for the games industry as a whole – many digital sources, used game sales, rentals and more – so they don’t paint as grim a picture as all the declines suggest.
