Horizon Zero Dawn expected to sell 4-6 million copies this year alone

22 Feb

Despite being a new IP, Horizon Zero Dawn may perform just as impressively as heavy hitters such as Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid.

SuperData, the research and analytics firm, has published some favourable predictions for the sales of Horizon Zero Dawn. According to the company, the new IP could have sales numbers that rival those of other big franchises such as Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid.

“Based on our initial observations we believe that Horizon Zero Dawn can sell around 4-6M units by end of 2017, given its early in the year release,” said SuperData research CEO Joost van Dreunen (via MCVUK). “Lifetime sales will likely be around 6-8M, which puts it in the same category as Uncharted 4 and Metal Gear Solid 5.”

Van Dreunen attributed some of this to the the many excellent reviews the game has been getting this week, which creates anticipation for launch day.

The research CEO also praised the release timing, calling it a “strong strategic move” on Sony’s part to increase hardware sales for the console, which the report notes have been “softening”.

“Now that we are in the second half of the current console cycle forces Sony and its rival Microsoft into a price war for the more risk-averse consumers that typically enter the market at this stage.

“And the release of the Nintendo Switch in early March will further increase the pressure on Sony to remain the platform of choice for the current gamer generation,” added Van Dreunen.

Horizon Zero Dawn releases February 28 in North America, March 1 in Europe and the UK.

Overwatch season 3 has just ended, with season 4 opening in a week

22 Feb

The third competitive season of Overwatch has drawn to a close.

overwatch

With the season now over, it’s a good time to jump on and collect the spoils of your work, although you’ll have needed a top 500 rank to get the really good sprays and icons.

Season 4 is due to begin in a week, on February 28. Blizzard has not talked about whether they have new plans for this season, after seasons 2 and 3 saw fairly significant shake-ups to the ranking system. It’ll be interesting to see if the same thing happens again or if Blizzard feels that they have settled into a groove.

We’re also wondering if we’ll see a new hero for season 4. Blizzard just dropped an interview with a fictional scientist within the Overwatch world that may contain some hints, who we’re told probably isn’t going to be Doomfist.

One popular theory at the moment, based on an unverified ‘leak’, is that the next hero will be an omnic tank named Anchora.

In any case, hopefully we can get our rankings up in Overwatch’s fourth competitive season next week.

GTA 5: The Cold & The Dead is our new favourite Rockstar Editor movie

21 Feb

See Los Santos re-imagined as a brutal wasteland.

The Cold & The Dead is a new machinima project from AbsolutePab, the guy behind some of our favourite Rockstar Editor movies to date; Los Santos Vice and The Discriminating Visitor of Los Santos.

Episode 1, Aftermath, is a longer take than previous flicks, using GTA 5 on PC, the Rockstar Editor and numerous mods to create a brooding and brutal post-apocalyptic story – the opposite of Los Santos’ often sickly dayglo pop-culture overdose.

“The Cold & The Dead gives me the opportunity to work with an apocalyptic environment but also the freedom to move back and forth through time,” says Pab.

“I always thought an alternative to the consumerism of GTAV would have made an interesting DLC for story mode.”

Check out the full movie above and it goes without saying you should subscribe to Pabs’ channel on YouTube for future updates.

We’ve grabbed a few screenshots below to highlight some of the cinematography in The Cold & The Dead.

Nintendo’s explanation for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s DLC is one you’ve heard before

21 Feb

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s post-launch DLC may be a first for the series, but Nintendo has more or less used the same way of justifying it as every other publisher before it.

the_legend_of_zelda_breath_of_the_wild (8)

Nintendo surprised everyone last week by announcing a season pass and post-launch DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Although this is technically not the publisher’s fist time creating DLC for a game, it’s a first for Zelda, and it looks like a substantial add-on.

Naturally, not everyone was happy with the announcement. During a recent interview with IGN (via Nintendo Life), Nintendo’s Bill Trinen took time to explain why the decision was made.

“It was tough, because we actually had a lot of debate in terms of do we announce it, how do we announce it,” Trinen said.

“I think one of the things that’s unique about the way Nintendo develops games is when we’re working on a game … you guys know that it’s essential we use every last minute to make the game as good as we possibly can, and really what that means is that the dev team was working on the main game, finished the main game, and as they’re starting to get to the very end and wrap it up, really they said, ‘You know we’ve made this massive world of Hyrule, we’ve spent a long time building it. It would be a waste to just make one game and have that be it.’”

Trinen then went on to say that a lot of thought went into the content that will go into the DLC, and reiterated that just the fact it’s launching a long time after the main game’s release, proves the content is not yet finished.

The first add-on launches this summer, whereas the other one is primed for a holiday release.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is out March 3 on Nintendo Switch, and Wii U.

Feature: Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy could be the icon Sony wanted

21 Feb
Horizon Zero Dawn game screenshots

Generally speaking, I scoff at marketing that calls a video game protagonist ‘iconic’ when the only people that have had first-hand experience with the character are those close to the project. Guerrilla Games recently referred to Horizon Zero Dawn’s lead, Aloy, as ‘a PlayStation icon’ in a behind-the-scenes video series speaking about different aspects of their brand new IP.  This is the first ever game featuring these individuals, this particular game-world, these specific robot beasts, etc. I’m sure Morecambe & Wise weren’t described as iconic before they’d done their first sketch, or The Beatles before they’d played their first gig, or Hitchcock before he’d directed his first film. When saying things like this, you’re generally setting yourself up for a giant fall. I may have to concede, though, because I think they’re onto something.

The events of Horizon Zero Dawn centre on Aloy: an agile, fierce, caring individual that wants to learn more about her past. Naturally enough, on her way to figuring out her history she encounters a couple of road blocks that mean her path of discovery takes a few detours. Some of these distractions come in the form of lacklustre, samey side missions, wherein you’re asked to serve one-dimensional, and quite often, boring NPCs; In a 30+ hour RPG, some of that is accepted and even expected, but it’s really noticeable in Horizon Zero Dawn because of how strong Aloy is.

Aloy’s an outcast: as a young girl she was shunned by her tribe and has had to learn how to survive in the wilderness through the teachings of her father figure, Rost. As she got older she wanted to learn more of why she was in the situation that she was, and, on a deeper level, who exactly she is. It’s effectively like your distant relative who, at 31, moved to a rural town with only one nearby Tesco Express in order to ‘find themselves.’ Unlike your second cousin, Aloy’s tale is a compelling one that involves overcoming odds to obtain knowledge that will give her solace, rather than overpriced iceburg lettuce.

Spend $100 on the PlayStation Store in North America, get $15 back

20 Feb

Sony wants to help you afford all those great games released so far this year.

psn

Sony has announced a nice promotion for those looking to pick up a few digital games through the PlayStation Store in the next few days. The offer is only available on the North American store.

If you spend $100 or more on anything on the store, you’ll receive a $15 cashback as a PSN Wallet voucher. Here’s the catch: all purchases have to come out of your PSN Wallet balance, not through your credit card or other means.

This means you’ll have to pre-charge your wallet either through your card, or by getting codes at retail. The promotion applies to purchases made between February 21 and February 28. The event kicks off at 12:01am PT, 3:01am PT on February 21. You’ll have until midnight PT, 3am ET on February 28 to take advantage.

As for the $15 voucher code, Sony said it will be set on or before March 14 either through email or as a direct message. Codes must be redeemed before midnight PT, 3am ET on March 31.

Keep in mind that you can use this on pre-orders and items on sale, but do note that you won’t get more than a single voucher – so spending $300 still only gets you $15 back.
