Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game of January 2017, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, other heavy-hitters play musical chairs

17 Feb

The NPD group has released hardware and software figures for January 2017 and it should come as no surprise that PlayStation 4 and Resident Evil 7 topped the respective sectors.

January 2017 NPD at a glance

Resident Evil 7 tops software charts

PS4 was best-selling console

PC software spend declined 12% year-over-year

All categories – accessories, hardware, software – down 4% year-over-year

Compare month-on-month: December 2016

Compare year-over-year: January 2016

While hardware sales declined, software was up 14% to $313 million. NPD attributed the increase to Resident Evil 7’s release, especially when comparing the year-over-year (yoy) release slates.

It’s also worth noting Resident Evil 7 was only on the market for five days when the NPD reporting period ended.

“With only five days in the market, Resident Evil 7 was the best-selling game in January,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “The last time Capcom had the best-selling game of the month (in dollar sales) was in March 2009 with Resident Evil 5.”

First-person shooters Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 were still two of the best-selling games for the month, and neither title has fallen off the chart since release in fall 2016.

Overwatch also returned after dropping off the NPD software list in October.

The rise in sales could possibly be attributed to various discount offers or the Overwatch Year of the Rooster event; however, that’s just conjecture on our part as NPD didn’t elaborate on why Overwatch was once again charting. It was, however, one of the best-selling games of 2016 per NPD’s yearly report in January.

Action titles Grand Theft Auto 5 and Watch Dogs 2 also remained on the chart, while sports titles Madden NFL 17 and FIFA 17 remained popular with US consumers as well.

PC software came in at $16 million, a 12% decline yoy from $18 million.

NPD Software Top Ten January 2017

You’ll notice not much changed on the chart since December 2016, as the heavy hitters played musical chairs and that’s about it.

The biggest changes were the entry of new releases Resident Evil 7 and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue – the second best-selling PS4 title for the month.

Pokemon Sun and Moon and Final Fantasy 15 fell off the chart, and again, Overwatch reentered it.

The full NPD software chart is below, but keep in mind not all digital stores report sales data. Some publishers who sell through the PlayStation and Xbox Stores report data, but others do not. For example: Microsoft, Sony and Blizzard (Battle.net) do not report first-party sales.

  1. Resident Evil 7 (PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  3. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  4. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  5. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (PS4)
  7. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Watch Dogs 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  9. Overwatch (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  10. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

This month, NPD also started reporting catalog sales of titles from the first six months of availability – starting with month seven (thanks, MCV). The winning publisher in the category for January 2017 was Take-Two and it was also the top publisher for 2016. NPD attributed this to continued sales of GTA 5.

NPD Hardware January 2017

Last week, the initial NPD report had PS4 topping hardware followed by Xbox One – which according to Microsoft enjoyed year-over-year (yoy) growth compared to January 2016.

PS4 sold the most units, with Xbox One coming in second place, and Nintendo’s Nintendo Classic Mini: NES in third.

“The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware (in units sold) during January 2017,” said NPD analyst Sam Naji. “And for the fourth consecutive month, PlayStation 4 Slim System 500GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Bundle was the top-selling PS4 sku in terms of units sold.”

For the month of January 2017, hardware totaled $127 million, a decline of 19% yoy compared to $157 million in 2016.

Accessories declined 17% yoy to $155, with toys-to-life skus (ex: Skylanders, amiibo, Lego Dimensions) showing the biggest decline.

Total spent in the US on accessories, hardware and software for the month January hit $611 million. While that’s indeed as large figure, it’s 4% less compared to $637 million spent in 2016.

NPD said the lower figure was due to a decline in hardware sales and general lack of growth.

Trump’s proposed trade tariff could impact the price of consoles, games in the US

24 Jan

The price of imported video games and consoles in the US could be on the rise, if Trump decides to impose import tariffs.

U.S. President Donald Trump has mentioned before that his administration may impose import taxes on business that do not manufacture their products in the United States.

Although a blanket tariff has yet to be signed, Polygon reports that The Entertainment Software Association ESA is already preparing for the worst, and is working on a plan to deal with such tariff, should one go into effect.

The site sources did not indicate how far the ESA is willing to go, or how big of an impact said tariff would cause to the video games industry.

As Polygon says, a five or ten percent import tax may be imposed on imported products, which would obviously include games developed outside the U.S., as well as consoles. All three major consoles are manufactured in China.

“We are looking into the issue and can provide more information shortly,” an ESA spokesperson told the site.

Green Man Gaming now sells PS4 game keys in the US

7 Oct

Green Man Gaming has expanded into the console keys market.

Green Man Gaming, the UK-based online retailer known among PC gamers as one of the cheapest and most reliable ways to buy games, has started selling console games. You may have noticed the new console category in the recent redesign, and now you know why.

The company partnered up with Sony US to become an “authorised online dealer” for digital game keys. You can already see big titles like The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4 and others available. Third-party games like Mafia 3 and Batman: Arkham Knight can also be purchased.

This is only available for the US at present, but Green Man Gaming and Sony have plans to expand to other regions in the future.

There’s now also a Nintendo section for 3DS and Wii U games.

Prices can only be seen if you’re browsing from the US. Although they’re in line with what you can find on the PlayStation Store itself, the hope is that GMG will include console games in its discount codes and regular sales.

PlayStation Plus prices to increase in US and Canada starting September

22 Aug

Sony has announced that PlayStation Plus subscription prices will increase in the US as well as Canada, starting next month.

Sony has quietly revealed a price a hike for PlayStation Plus subscriptions for the US and Canada. In quite the stealth announcement, the company posted an update to the PlayStation Blog entry about August’s free games, confirming that the twelve and three months options will be affected.

The yearly membership will be increased from $50 to $60 in the US, and from $50 CAD to $70 CAD in Canada. The three months options will also see an increase from $18 to $25 in the US and from $18 CAD to $30 in Canada.

The monthly plan will see a hike only in Canada, bringing the price to $12 CAD from $10 CAD. This is the first increase of its kind for the North American region since Plus was introduced back in 2010.

These prices will go in effect on September 22. If you renew your subscription before that date, you’ll be charged the current prices. If you’re going to cancel, make sure you do so before September 22.

Sony has not yet revealed if Europe and UK will see similar hikes. That said, the company did increase UK Plus prices last year, and a few other countries the year before.

PlayStation Plus is required for online play on PlayStation 4. The service has other benefits such as cloud saves, extra sale discounts, and free monthly games. Sony said the new prices “reflect current market conditions”.

Xbox One outsells PS4 in July in the US

12 Aug

Microsoft has come out on top in terms of hardware sales during July, according to the NPD Group.

The NPD group has revealed one bit of detail from the upcoming July report, confirming that Xbox One was the top selling console in the US during the month.

In July, Microsoft cut the price of the basic model to $250, a reduction from $280 in June. These cuts were believed to help clear out stock before the slim Xbox One S’ launch this month, which is obviously not counted in this NPD report.

“We’re honoured that Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in July, and that total gaming hours on Xbox consoles globally were up 18 percent over last year, reaching 1.55 billion hours,” Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols told VentureBeat.

Although the price cuts certainly helped, Microsoft said excitement for the brand coming out of E3 was a factor.

“Following its release last week, the 2TB launch edition of Xbox One S sold out in the U.K. and is nearly sold out in the U.S.,” added Nichols.

“Later this month on August 23, we will launch 500GB and 1TB options for Xbox One S at $299 and $349, respectively. We’re excited about all the fun gamers are having on Xbox One and all the new releases we’ll be bringing them this holiday.”

July is relatively a slow month, so it’ll be interesting to see how the various games chart when the full July report is released.

Donald Trump tweets campaign ad that’s totally the Mass Effect 2 launch trailer

4 Apr

If you don’t want to pay attention to the US presidential race, this Mass Effect 2 ad rip-off for Donald Trump will get you to reconsider.

The official Twitter account for US presidential candidate Donald Trump, has tweeted a seemingly supporter-made campaign ad that’s actually the Mass Effect 2 launch trailer, but with different quotes and footage.

The video was tweeted earlier, but the tweet made no mention of the ad’s creator, leading some to believe it was official.

The ad is relatively well-produced, replacing press quotes about Mass Effect 2 with ones relating to Trump and the presidential race. Footage of real-world events are interspersed with the same trailer music, as well as Martin Sheen’s (Illusive Man) narration.

It seems like a troll attempt, given the context, but I really can’t say for sure. The YouTube mirror has since been removed by EA, but you can still watch it below:

Now that we’re done laughing at Trump’s expense, let’s take moment to appreciate what a great launch trailer this was.

GameStop no longer selling PS4 & Xbox One bundles that include digital games

17 Sep

Going forward, GameStop will not be selling console bundles that come with digital game codes.

gamestop store

GameStop executives have revealed a decision to no longer sell console bundles that come with vouchers for digital games.

As reported by Giant Bomb, the chain’s most recent earnings report [PDF] paint a picture of a retailer trying to put a stop to the increasingly popular bundles, and in tern artificially extend its relevancy.

This essentially means consumers may see those bundles available at their local GameStop or online, but they will instead come with physical versions of whatever bundled games that would otherwise be a digital code.

GameStop has already done this with the Madden NFL 16 bundles for both PS4 and Xbox One. By “working with” EA and platform holders to provide customers buying the bundle with physical copies of the game. Furthermore, the retail chain said it’s willing to make similar arrangements for other games in the future.

The obvious and most apparent reason for this is that GameStop benefits greatly from the resale of used games. Used games need to be physical of course and offering one to bundle-buying customers greatly increases the retail’s chance in getting the game traded in. Which in turn can be resold.

Your opinion of the move will depend on the frequency of which you trade in your games at GameStop. That being said, while major titles like Madden can endure, it’s not clear if the retailer will endeavour to do the same for other smaller or older bundled games, instead of refusing to sell these bundles altogether.

GameStop to launch retro game and console trade-in experiment

15 Apr

GameStop wants to get into the retro game and console business, providing it’s a worthwhile endeavor. To test the possibility, it will soon allow customers in Birmingham, Alabama and New York City to trade-in classic consoles and games in-store.

Speaking with IGN, a spokesperson for the company said the initiative will kick off on April 25 at 250 stores in the aforementioned regions. Customers will be able to trade-in or sell select retro games and consoles from the likes of Nintendo, SEGA and Sony which will be refurbished and resold online.

All products will be sent to GameStop’s Refurbishment Operations Center for “inspection, testing and repair,” according to the spokesperson, and each will contain the same warranty as refurbished consoles already on offer.

Should the program prove successful, a nationwide roll out will occur later in the year.

DeNA lays off large number of employees at San Francisco and Vancouver offices

11 Apr

DeNA has issues a round of lay offs at its development studio in Vancouver, and additional sources have stated many staffers at the firm’s San Francisco office have been let go as well.

A company spokesperson confirmed the Vancouver redundancies to GamesBeat after the studio’s product manager David Phan revealed the “significant staff reduction” over social media.

According to a statement from DeNA Group, the lay offs are part of restructuring its North American studio operations.

“The West will continue to be one of our core markets for our mobile gaming business, and this decision has no relation to our alliance with Nintendo or the popularity of Final Fantasy Record Keeper,” the representative told GamesBeat.

Nintendo and DeNA announced a mobile games partnership back in March which would create new games based Nintendo IP for smartphones.

DeNA said it hopes the deal will bring in $25 million a month in revenue.

Latest Capcom Pro Tourney accidentally used wrong version of Street Fighter

9 Apr

The latest Capcom Pro Tournament event was the scene of an embarrassing/amusing occurrence.

The NorCal Regionals, a Capcom-sponsored Street Fighter 4 tournament, was held in California over the weekend. During a match between players Ricky Ortiz and Darryl “Snake Eyez” Lewis, the players started noticing some discrepancies, things that were no longer present in the current version of Ultra Street Fighter 4, according to The Daily Dot.

Tournament organisers discovered that the version being used was not the most updated one. Not only that, but four matches between the top 16 finishing players had already been played using the older version. The decision was then made to nullify the results of said matches and ask competitors to replay them.

Only one of the four matches saw a different outcome.

John Choi, of the organisers, explained what happened in a lengthy Twitter post. Choi said that he personally made sure that all Ultra Street Fighter 4 versions were patched to version 1.04. Digital versions that is, because the Xbox console that these games were played on had an Ultra Street Fighter 4 disc in it, which made the console default to that version of the game.

“I am truly sorry for this mistake as it has impacted the integrity of NCR and the tour,” Choi said. “The mental and emotional pressure of having to replay the matches again was completely unfair to them.”
