Meet two of Horizon: Zero Dawn’s deadly robot dinosaurs, the Thunderjaw and Snapmaw

9 Feb

Horizon: Zero Dawn is full of interesting beasties, some of which are a bit of a bother, to put it mildly.

Horizon: Zero Dawn combines two terrific things – robots and dinosaurs – into something even better: robot dinosaurs.

Some of these robot dinosaurs are friendly, or at least not actively hostile, and can be put to good use. Others pretty much exist to make your life difficult, and that’s the case with the Thunderjaw, the T-Rex like creature that’s become something of a symbol for Horizon: Zero Dawn.

One of the most dangerous creatures in Horizon: Zero Dawn, the Thunderjaw shown in the video above is a combat-class construct equipped with cannons, disc launchers and a mouth laser. As well as its ranged arsenal, it can also attack with charges and tail swipes.

By comparison, the Snapmaw shown below is positively peaceful – but it’s also likely to take a chunk out of any Horizon: Zero Dawn player silly enough to get close. The Snapmaw is an acquisition class machine, and is usually found near water, gathering minerals from sediment. Close to it relies on bites and swipes, but at distance it launches cryo mortars that freeze their targets.

Horizon: Zero Dawn launches at the end of February, exclusively for PS4.

The first new IP from Guerrilla Games since Killzone, Horizon: Zero Dawn is set in a distant post-civilisation future where humanity is reduced to a subsistence existence among the ruins of a much more advanced society, which apparently built robot dinosaurs. I can’t imagine how that went wrong.

Rainbow Six Siege’s cheap but grindy $15 PC Starter Edition is back, for good this time

9 Feb

Rainbow Six Siege welcomes those short on cash but rich with time.

rainbow_six_siege_started_edition

The Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition is back, although this time it is exclusive to Uplay and won’t be withdrawn from sale after a brief visit.

The $15 package offers a cheap way into Rainbow Six Siege, a frequently updated and lively scene it’s definitely worth checking out – but it’s worthwhile noting how this version differs from the one with the standard price tag.

Although Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition allows access to all content and has no level restrictions, it puts the brakes on collecting Operators via the in-game currency, Renown. Each of the original batch of Operators goes for 12,500 Renown – a serious increase on the 500 to 2,000 Renown paid by those who own the full game. It’ll cost you an additional $35 to buy them all if you can’t be bothered grinding.

You do get two Operators to start with, randomly chosen from a newb-friendly pool of Rook, Sledge, Ash, Fuze, Mute and Smoke, and enough credits to purchase two more Operators or whatever other in-game content you please. Also, post-launch Operators cost the same for everyone, regardless of whether they’re playing Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition or a full-priced version.

Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition debuted in June 2016 for a limited time, and popped back up again briefly in September; it has never been made available on consoles. It’s become permanent right as Rainbow Six Siege Year 2 kicks off with Operation Velvet Shell.

Nioh’s post-launch update 1.02 is live, Digital Deluxe Edition season pass problem fixed

9 Feb

A small update for Nioh dropped today. It fixes “various bugs,” sooooo, yeah.

nioh_july_blast_screen_8

Nioh‘s first post-launch update is live and it’s pretty much the same as the day one update.

Patch 1.02 “fixes various bugs” which is the same vague description attributed to launch day’s 1.01, although the Nioh wiki says the update has fixed a “freezing error/bug”.

If you’re having issues downloading it, you’re not alone, but just wait a while or kick start the download by selecting the Check for Update option on the game’s icon on your dashboard.

Update 1.02 is only a small one, coming in at just under 400MB.

In other Nioh news, players who bought the Digital Deluxe Edition and found that the season pass wasn’t registering as purchased can now rest easy. The issue has been fixed. HUzzah!

The original PS Store Support thread was updated earlier today.

“This issue has now been resolved and the Season Pass should no longer be purchasable if you have already purchased the Deluxe Edition. Many thanks for your reports and patience.”

Nioh is available now exclusively on PS4.

Nioh Skills Unlocks Guide – Weapon Skills, Onmyo Skills, Ninjutsu Skills

9 Feb

Nioh Skills Guide to help you get an overview of all available Combat Skills in Nioh, best Skills to use, and how to unlock them.

As you progress through the game and level up using Amrita, you’ll automatically earn Skill Points. These Skill Points are needed to learn new and powerful skills in Nioh.

There are basically three types of Skill Points in the game i.e. Samurai Skill Points, Ninjutsu Skill Points, and Onmyo Magic Skill Points. These Nioh Skills are basically tied to different Character Stats and only unlock if you level up in a particular stat associated with your desired Skill.

For example, putting Amrita in ‘Body’ should allow you to earn Samurai Skill Points. In the section below, I’ve listed all 8 Character Stats and the Skill Points that are tied with them. Another thing that you should know is that some Nioh Skills can also be unlocked by gaining Weapon Familiarity.

For more help on Nioh, read out our Stances Guide, Character Builds Guide, and Best Starting Weapons Guide.

Nioh Skills Guide

There are some Skills which are universal and can be used with all weapons, but others are specific to a single weapon type. Lastly, Skills in Nioh are divided into Active Skills and Passive Skills.

In our Nioh Skills Guide, we’ve detailed everything you need to know about different Skills in Nioh, best Skills, and more.

Unlocking Skills in Nioh

As mentioned earlier, leveling up a specific stat in Nioh allows you to earn Skill Points for the Skill associated with that particular Character Stat. In this section of the guide, I’ve provided an overview of which Character Stats unlock which Skills.

  • Nioh Skill Stat — Rewards Samurai Skill Points
  • Nioh Body Stat — Rewards Samurai Skill Points
  • Nioh Strength Stat — Rewards Samurai Skill Points
  • Nioh Spirit Stat — Rewards Onmyo Magic Skill Points
  • Nioh Magic Stat — Rewards Onmyo Magic Skill Points
  • Nioh Dexterity Stat — This Rewards Ninjutsu Skill Points

Stagehand Review: Power To The Platform

9 Feb
stagehand_banner

Big Bucket, the creators of The Incident, bring a challenging twist to the cornerstone of arcade games in their new “reverse platformer” Stagehand. Taking a solid deviation from the norm, this new offering from the indie studio allows players to move the environment rather than the character.

Stagehand features Frank Solway, the main character from The Incident, running as fast as he can through the days of the week, trying to avoid being smushed between an unmoved pillar and the edge of the screen which has advanced upon him. Almost all of the structural and environmental elements can be moved up or down to clear a path for Frank to run, jump, and collect coins. Your attention, therefore, must remain on the path of platforms before you, rather than the character who might normally command your attention.

Stagehand Review

Controlling the landscape did remind me a little of Surfingers, a fun little high-score chaser from 2016 where you swipe up and down to meet your shifting waves. But Surfingers target waves are always below you, so you could swipe anywhere to effect change and this made your progress only a matter of timing, not precision.

Stagehand is notable however, because it requires lifting your finger off the screen to navigate between oncoming obstacles coming from both above and below you. Swiping up and down to control different scenic elements that are not connected to one another means a player must have both perfect timing and precise placement on the screen to move the world and let our hero pass.

Stagehand Review

The learning curve felt steep for me, and the constant cheap deaths early on reminded me more of the relentless, unforgiving “Flappy” games incessantly propagating in the app stores. It takes time and practice to correct the instinctive desire to control the character. Swiping up feels like Frank should jump into the sky, but he may actually be falling to another platform as you’ve just cleared the way for him.

While everyone is going to find their own groove as they adjust to controlling the platforms, it seemed that swiping up was most often the best choice for a platform that could move in either direction. Gaining height meant that you could clear wider gaps when you jumped, while also getting coins. The occasional wall from above would need to be swiped up and out of the way, but because gravity would always take over, being higher up meant more opportunities to fix a mistake in judgment or timing.

The music will surely delight retro enthusiasts, and fans of The Incident may recognize the musical stylings of composer Cabel Sasser. Be warned, however, that the old school arcade music will likely get stuck in your head, especially if you’re replaying sections due to your inevitable missteps.

You will die a lot, and it will get frustrating. But the monetary investment for this premium game means you have endless lives and can keep trying for as long as it takes without any continues or energy systems to get in the way. So if your fingers are itching for a fast-paced arcade game that looks familiar but feels fresh, Stagehand will be worth the try.
