The Dark Souls 3 video scene is alive and thriving as Friendship Chest creator continues Ungrateful Jack series

6 Feb

Dark Souls 3 remains ripe with potential for player-created narratives.

Dark Souls 3 has a story, and it’s a pretty good one, once you spend a year watching YouTube explanations and puzzling out the whole franchise to your satisfaction.

But there are new Dark Souls 3 stories being written every day as the multiplayer community continues helping, hindering, protecting, duelling, invading, murdering and harvesting each other.

Close to Dark Souls 3’s release we saw dozens of examples every day as people put together weird and wonderful builds for the express purpose of engaging in themed invasions for their own or others’ amusement, a series tradition that gave us the Mr Meeseeks Gank Squad, NPC disguises, and many more – and some possibly apocryphal anecdotes like the Fashion Police.

One that really stuck in my mind is Friendship Chest. Rather than just string together a series of backstabs and emotes and throw some dubstep over it, or release unedited stream footage, creator Sean Txty, AKA Cursed Object, wove a narrative and used cinematic techniques to tell a beautiful tale of Dark Souls 3 adventures.

Since then, his invasions seem to have taken a more traditional bent, focusing on bring pain and ruin to his Dark Souls 3 hosts. Some months ago he debuted Vile Catherine, a dagger-only invader, and after enjoying success with this one he produced a follow-up, Ungrateful Jack: The Bastard in Black – Vile Catherine’s trainee.

As you’ll see in the video above, Ungrateful Jack is an up and coming assassin whose story is framed by gorgeous JRPG portrait dialogue boxes. He uses a raw mailbreaker +5, and thanks to the obscuring ring he’s able to stay invisible while outside lock-on range – a favourite Dark Souls 3 invasion tactic.

Despite this, Jack may not be the stealthiest Dark Souls 3 invader you’ve ever seen, and his handler seems to despair of him on occasion. But the lad gets the job done, and keeps us entertained along the way, and that’s the main thing.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has finally gone gold, only five years too late to save the Wii U

6 Feb

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is officially 100% happening.

the_legend_of_zelda_breath_of_the_wild_switch (34)

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has gone gold, meaning it is complete and off to manufacturers to be made ready for retail release.

Nintendo hasn’t made a big song and dance about the news, which broke via a tweet from Monolith Soft’s Yasuyuki Honne, translated by Trusted Reviews. Monolith Soft, best known for Xenoblade, aided Nintendo’s core Legend of Zelda team with Breath of the Wild’s huge open world.

It’s a bittersweet moment for Nintendo and The Legend of Zelda fans. The hugely anticipated RPG is the fulfilment of long-held expectations, and will no doubt give the new Switch a shot in the arm as it launches on early March.

But for those who purchased the last Nintendo console in anticipation of this new The Legend of Zelda game, it’s awkward to see it finished within a week of the Wii U being discontinued.

The latest figures from Nintendo show the Wii U was the worst-selling console it has ever produced. It’s hard not to wonder whether The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild might have changed that, had it released alongside the Wii U in 2012.

Nintendo has said it intends to release first-party Switch software regularly rather than allow fans to suffer the long gaps of the Wii and Wii U years. We’re really hopeful that means the Switch will bound along gracefully and attract plenty of third-party support. It’s an odd console, but Switch is the best place to play the new Legend of Zelda, which is a pretty big thing.

It’s just a shame it wasn’t a thing the Wii U could ever boast. Poor old console.

Fallout 4’s 58GB high-resolution texture pack is now free on Steam, if you have the drive space

6 Feb

Fallout 4, shinier than ever. But at what cost? Just kidding, we already know the cost: 58GB of your download quota and however long it clogs your downstream.

fallout4_guide_valentine_face

Fallout 4‘s most recent PC patch is out of beta and available to everyone, which means you can go ahead and download the free high-resolution texture pack and make your game the prettiest it has ever been.

You can grab the pack right now on Steam but be warned: this is the 58GB Fallout 4 upgrade for which you’ll need to meet higher system requirements than the base version of Fallout 4.

If you’re not on PC, don’t fret: a PS4 Pro patch will polish Fallout 4 up a bit. If you’re on Xbox One or don’t have a PS4 Pro, join me in a mass sulking session.

Bethesda put some Fallout 4 screenshots up with the DLC but at first glance they appear to be the same promotional shots distributed well before the game released rather than images of the high resolution textures. Pity that; I’d like to see what I’m missing out on. Perhaps it’s better this way, as my envy can be contained rather than waxing mightily.

Never mind, poor old normal resolution textured Fallout 4; I still love you best. Let’s go whack some raiders and laugh uproariously every time chunks of them go flying around the screen.

Missing the Ghost Recon: Wildlands beta? Perhaps this trailer for the live action movie will comfort you

6 Feb

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is going away for weeks and week and weeks, but at least we have this.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands won a lot of hearts during its closed beta testing this weekend, but that just means we’re all going to sit around and pine for it.

Perhaps anticipating your sudden bereavement, Ubisoft has commissioned a live action Ghost Recon: Wildlands short, which serves as a prologue of sorts and tells a story from within the cartel you’ll be taking down in-game.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands releases in early March for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, which feels a long way off now, but the Ghost Recon: Wildlands movie releases next week, which is a much more tolerable wait. And when it is done, you’ll be a whole week closer to the real thing.

So set your mental calendar to February 16, the short’s debut date, and feed your anticipation by watching the trailer above. Ghost Recon: Wildlands loves you, my cherubim, and it will come back to you: but first, you must set it free.

French gaming trade group stands up for Steam amid European Commission investigation

6 Feb

A French gaming trade group has responded to The European Commission’s investigation into Steam’s geoblocking practices.

steam big picture

The European Commission revealed last week that it’ll be investigating Steam for limiting keys for certain games from being activated anywhere in but the country they were bought from.

The tactic is known as geoblocking, and is being done to prevent resale of games bought from regions where they have much lower prices into more prosperous countries, as well stop the practice of switching Steam regions to take advantage of the cheaper prices in the less than wealthy EU countries.

Now, the French gaming trade group Syndicat National du Jeu Vidéo, has issued a statement defending Valve’s position. As reported by GamesIndustry, the statement more or less explained the reason everyone knows why geoblocking exists in the first place.

“The investigation is focused on possible geoblocking practices that might have occurred to counter the emergence and growth of certain conduct on the digital video game marketplace whereby some companies massively purchase digital activation keys priced for distribution in territories with low consumer purchase power and then resell such keys globally via the internet at higher price.

“The SNJV has long been concerned by this parallel market, which potentially allows for the avoidance of tax laws and European regulations that normally should apply, and penalizes both European consumers and video game creators.

“We hope that by shedding light on this context, European and national authorities will be able to propose solutions to video game creators and publishers that, today, are impeded from selling their games in certain European territories at prices that are affordable to the general public compared to local purchasing power,” concluded the statement.

Of course, Valve is not alone in this, as it’s being investigated alongside five other big publishers like Namco, Capcom, Focus Home, Koch Media, and Zenimax.

Here are all the big changes coming to Rainbow Six Siege with tomorrow’s Velvet Shell update

6 Feb

Velvet Shell, Rainbow Six Siege’s first DLC in 2017, is coming tomorrow alongside a number of big changes.

rainbow_six_siege_operation_velvet_shell

In case you missed it, the first content drop for Rainbow Six Siege this year is right around the corner.

Having been recently detailed, Ubisoft has now announced the release date for Velvet Shell. But that’s not all, the patch that brings the new content will also come with a number of key adjustments.

Before we get into the details, the update will drop tomorrow following one-hour server maintenance across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. PC goes offline 11-12am EST / 8-9am PT / 4-5pm GMT. PS4 servers go offline 9-10am EST / 6-7am PT / 2-3pm GMT. Finally, Xbox One maintenance takes place 10-11am EST / 7-8am PT / 3-4pm GMT.

Outside of the free map and the two new operators, Velvet Shell comes with four new signature weapon skins. Rook will also receive the first Year 2 Elite set – a collection of unique armour pieces and a victory animation.

As for game changes, first up we have a bit of a UI refresh, which aims to make navigating the interface more dynamic. The new UI will display challenges, news, and boosters in one place. The same page will also have a section that allows for quick access to the last gamemode you played, this is referred to as a ‘personalised play button’.

The operators menu have seen a few upgrades, too. Additionally, the update is changing how the game displays ranks. For starters, the ranks in each tier will now go from four to one, as opposed to the other way around, when you get closer to the next tier.

For example, the lower Gold tier rank will now be Gold 4, and so on. The rank icons themselves are also getting changed to make it easier to tell players’ ranks at a glance.

As far as balance changes go, the Velvet Shell update will make changes to the way weapon sights are rendered in game. Previously, the same sight would look different from one weapon to the other (closer to the screen or farther).

rainbow_six_velvet_shell_weapon_sights_change_1

As you can see, the sight’s position in first-person changed depending on where it was physically attached to the gun itself. Though this was authentic to the real thing, Ubisoft noted it didn’t have a positive impact in game. Now, any sight will look the same regardless of the weapon it’s attached to.

rainbow_six_velvet_shell_weapon_sights_change_2

Though the change has already been made, Ubisoft said it’s still looking for feedback through the usual channels.

Operators Capitao and IQ get a couple of changes, as well. The former now has access to a claymore, while the latter can now equip frag grenades. Capitao no longer has access to frag grenades, but his stun grenades will remain. As for IQ, her three stun grenades have been replaced with two frag grenades, while retaining access to her breach charges.

See below for the rest of the patch notes:
