Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15 videos take another look at the cast, plot

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15 videos take another look at the cast, plot

The two videos below were shown during the latest Active Time Report. One introduces the actors lending their voices to the main characters and the other features a few clips from the CGI film.

Each are in Japanese, but you still get a general idea of what’s going on.

The first video posted below from Nathalie’s YouTube channel, seems to have clips pulled from the presentation and put together. It even repeats itself at one point.

Kingsglaive looks really lovely, despite the Japanese voices being out of sync with the lip movements. It’s assumed the clips shown are for the English dub.

The second video is the Japanese theatrical trailer.

The film acts as a companion to Final Fantasy 15, and recounts the story of the elite warriors who serve Noctis’s father, Lucis.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15 will see a theatrical release in Japan. It will be released ahead of Final Fantasy 15 on streaming services and via download.

Final Fantasy 15 releases worldwide September 30 on PS4 and Xbox One.

We’ve also pulled some stills from the video, but they really don’t due the film justice.

Thanks, Siliconera.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan (XOne)

31 May

Fans have come to expect a lot from PlatinumGames, a studio founded by industry giants Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba, and Hideki Kamiya. Lately, however, those expectations have been tempered by some sub-par outings. Platinum's latest, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, is another one of those lackluster titles. Mutants is especially frustrating because Platinum already proved it could make a dependable licensed game with Transformers: Devastation. Yet where Devastation was a love letter to fans, Mutants is more like a brick through the window.

Like so many of Platinum's games, Mutants is a hack and slash action game. Each of the four ninja turtle brothers - Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael - punch and kick their way through nine levels, each culminating in a boss fight. It seems like the evil brain Krang, now a general, plots to destroy Manhattan and take over the world with his lieutenant Shredder. Platinum developed the story in-house, inventing its own storyline instead of borrowing plotlines from the comics, cartoons, or movies.

Platinum isn't known for its epic storytelling, so a cheesy world domination storyline doesn't matter as long as the game has strong fundamentals. The problem is, Mutants doesn't. It throws a lot of gameplay hooks and tools at the player, but none of them are developed throughout the campaign. They exist, probably, to cover up the simple and unrewarding fighting mechanics that define the game.

In the Mutants tutorial, you're taught a dodge move and a parry move, tutored on stealth take-downs, and instructed how to scale buildings, grind rails, and glide through the air. Pretty cool stuff, right? Well, don't expect to use these abilities in any meaningful way. Players can survive enemy and boss encounters without dodging or parrying at all. And levels are designed in such a straightforward and clumsy way as to make stealth and verticality virtually meaningless. There's also a pointless scanning device that's basically a glorified waypoint reader.

The boring combat and tedious level design in Mutants is mitigated somewhat by the turtles themselves, each of whom fights in a unique way with special power moves. Raphael, for example, is relatively slow-moving but hard-hitting. Donatello, armed with a bo staff, has long range. And Mikey - when he's not inhaling pizza - strikes fast and furiously. Moreover, in battle each turtle can employ four different power moves. Raph can enter stealth mode, for example; Leo can slow time; and Mikey can become a cheerleader - pom-poms and all - in order to recharge his brothers' power moves.

The most impressive of these power moves are the combo attacks, where two turtles team up to knock the stuffing out of anyone nearby. The best occurs whenever Mikey teams up with one of the other turtles. A disco ball drops, Mikey and his partner disco dance, and then so too do the bad guys, opening themselves up to a flurry of attacks. It never gets old.

All of these special moves prove particularly important in boss battles, which are the highlight of Mutants. Where the majority of each level is a boring slog that demands players run from point A to point B to defuse a bomb or take out a platoon of enemy soldiers, the end boss fight is a lot of fun. It's here where players actually need to watch enemy patterns and develop a strategy, instead of absentmindedly mashing buttons. The boss fight with Wingnut is unusually good.

The entirety of Mutants can be played solo - with a single player switching among all four turtles - but it's with other players online that the game becomes more enjoyable. Here turtles can adequately complement each other without the need to switch characters on the fly. Unfortunately some technical errors mar the experience on Xbox One. Players are just as likely to connect smoothly with an online lobby as they are to experience time-outs, connection errors, and mid-level disconnections.

This problem could be diminished with an offline co-op mode, but Platinum inexplicably removed that option from the game. Turtles games have a long and glorious history of couch co-op. That Platinum skipped the mode altogether is inexcusable.

In the end, Platinum didn't need to do much to make Mutants in Manhattan a worthwhile experience. All it had to do was respect the source material, create some satisfying combat mechanics, and honor the series' local multiplayer origins. It failed largely at all three. Hopefully the next licensed game from Platinum - if there is one - will learn from Mutants' mistakes.

Hatoful Boyfriend Review: Pigeon Love

31 May

hatofulfeat

Hatoful Boyfriend is utterly wonderful, and more than a little bizarre. It’s no good if you want explosions galore or a plethora of puzzles — as a tale of romancing birds though? Well, there’s nothing else quite like it.

Ok, there’s nothing remotely like it, but even if there was, Hatoful Boyfriend would still be pretty great. It’s that game that you never knew you needed, but I promise, you absolutely do.

You’ve been accepted as the only human student at the St PigeoNation’s Institute, a school for talented birds. It’s as absurd as it sounds, but much like any regular school, you’ll be splitting your time between class and finding love. You might be human, but the birds can still very easily fall for you. What unfolds is a visual novel based tale of flirting and lust.

hatoful1

That means that there’s a ton of reading to do. You can easily spend 10 minutes or more reading through the story before being presented with any decisions to make. It’s a charming tale though, because Hatoful Boyfriend knows it’s quirky. You’ll enjoy various amusing jokes and tongue in cheek moments as you get to know the birds within your school. After all, this is a school called St PigeoNation. Did you really think it was going to be deadly serious with its conceit? Of course not! This is a game that revels in its light-hearted nature.

Decisions generally relate to things like what class to attend. By attending different elective subjects, you can increase your stats. These then tie-in to what your suitors might appreciate most about you. There are also many times when you can choose to side with a particular character, which leads them to liking you a little more. It’s fun to play around and get to know each character in some way, with you soon warming to certain pigeons more so than others.

hatoful3

Hatoful Boyfriend contains multiple different endings, so there’s plenty of reason to keep playing. Some of these endings are far happier than others too, with the odd detour really proving to be quite bleak. Mostly though, this is a pretty light and fluffy take on the typical dating sim genre. It’s a lot of fun too, as you’d expect from any title that can provide you with the ‘threat’ of pigeon biker gangs.

Rather fortunately, you can always opt to skip some of the dialogue by setting the game speed on high. You won’t want to do this early on, as the fun of Hatoful Boyfriend is getting to know the characters. If you’re desperate to replay simply to see a different ending however, it’s ideal for when you want to skip past a sequence you’ve seen before. Otherwise, Hatoful Boyfriend is mostly a slow-paced experience. That can be a double-edged sword depending on your attention span, but there’s no reason why you can’t play through it bit by bit rather than in one full session.

This iOS version of Hatoful Boyfriend also bundles in an extra scenario and ending, meaning there’s a reason to replay it if you’ve already enjoyed earlier versions.

Once upon a time, you might have thought this concept was utterly absurd. You’d have been right — but it’s the kind of absurd that’s immediately loveable. It’s hard to not be warmed by Hatoful Boyfriend’s charming visuals and the quirky storytelling, and who knows? You might just find love after all.

PlayStation E3 Experience 2016 Announced

31 May

Sony is bringing back the PlayStation E3 Experience on Monday, June 13, to over 85 movie theaters across the US, Canada, and Latin America.

Tickets for the event is free and will be PlayStation.com/E3Experience starting Tuesday, May 31 at 10am PT.

"In 2014, we had this crazy idea to partner with Fathom Events and broadcast our E3 Press Conference LIVE to some theaters North America, not knowing if this was something people would even be interested in attending," Sony Interactive Entertainment's Michael Steranka. "Two years later, and we’ve had to more than double our seating capacity to accommodate everybody!

"There’s just something special about watching the news and excitement of E3 together with fellow PlayStation fans that makes this an event I look forward to every year. Between the loud cheers that, honestly, probably ruin movies for people in adjacent theaters (sorry not sorry), and the camaraderie felt in the air from being surrounded by the PlayStation Nation, there’s no better way to experience E3."

"In addition to getting to watch an HD simulcast of our E3 Press Conference, fans in attendance will go home with special PlayStation goods, including a commemorative Coca-Cola E3 Experience Cup and #37 from the PlayStation Collectible Card series first introduced at PlayStation Experience 2015! This is the only way to get your hands on these exclusive collectibles, so don’t miss your opportunity."
