Bayonetta, Transformers dev working on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game

30 Nov

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the natural follow up to Transformers Devastation.

teenage_mutant_ninja_turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan is on the way to PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, apparently.

According to Gematsu the project was outed by a Brazilian rating earlier this month, but a recent update from the Australian Classification Board revealed the developer as Platinum Games.

It seems like a natural extension to Activision’s partnership with Platinum on Transformers Devastation, and we’re crossing our fingers Platinum takes the same approach this time, and draws on the classic cartoon rather than any of the multiple reboots. Not that I have strong opinions on whether those are horrible, of course. Ahem.

Platinum is also working on Scalebound for Microsoft and Nier: Automata for Square Enix; the former Clover staffers certainly keep busy.

Batman: Arkham Origins dev hiring for two new DC Comics games

Superman. Wonder Woman. I’ve only just started my DC Comics games wishlist and already I need a cold shower.

Batman: Arkham Origins developer Warner Bros. Games Montreal has quietly revealed it has two new, unannounced DC Comics games in the works.

Although you won’t see it on the studio’s recruiting page, visiting the top site currently brings up a pop up referencing “two AAA projects in development focused on expanding the DC Comics universe in the interactive space”.

This isn’t surprising news; Warner Bros. said back in 2011 that it had plans for more DC games specifically at the Montreal studio, and we half-believe Rocksteady is working on a Superman game. There’s also the matter of the mysterious “Arkham Universe” trademarks Warner Bros. filed in 2013.

Gameplay

Star Wars Base Command is the companion app game that allows you to earn some extra credits for Battlefront when you’re out and about in the world. It’s a simple to learn, difficult to master base defence game that has you fighting off waves of empire enemies with your hand of rebel cards and units.

If you get into the higher levels of Base Command there’s some real credits to be made that you can then use to outfit your battlefront characters with. To get you off on the right track, here are some Base Command tips for victory, and maximum credit rewards.

Remember to Exchange Cards First!

You can only swap out cards for new ones before any other play has been made so make sure to take some time and assess your needs for the round and then swap out any cards you are sure you don’t want/ need. If there is a card you can see having to use the next turn either, you should use to turn to swap it out as well.

Use Your Base Cannon Wisely

Your base cannon is one of your most valuable resources so you should get to know when you should and shouldn’t use it. Sometimes it’s best to save it and let it charge up for a big blast, like when there are only weak or slow enemies heading your way at the moment and you have the unit cards to clear them out.

If you start seeing enemies with the Protect perk (first attack does no damage), you should use your turret to remove it so that subsequent attacks by your unit cars will not be wasted. Even a single shot from the base cannon will remove the protect perk from any enemy.

Maximizing Your Score

In order to max your score and get the coveted 3 star rating which gives the most credits, you’ll need to not only successfully defend your base, you have to keep enough units alive and your base in good enough shape to get the required points.

Some tips for gaining more points are:

  • Use your units to get the finishing blow on enemies. Many times they will rank up from landing the killing blow which awards you more points.
  • Keep the enemy at bay. Easier said than done, but the less damage your base takes to its shields or structure, the more bonus points you’ll get at the end of the match.
  • Keep your score multiplier high. For every enemy you kill without losing one of your own, your score multiplier will rise by one to a maximum of 4x. This means that at the max score multiplier you will receive 4x as many points for any enemies you kill than you would if you didn’t increase the multiplier at all. The key is in not letting your units die. Every time you lose a unit, your score multiplier will drop by one. Keep losing units and it will eventually return to the starting level of 1x.

Make Your Own Custom Deck

The starter deck is fine for the first 10 or so levels, but after that things start to get more difficult very quickly and only the custom cards have the answers to the bigger threats like the AT-AT and some of the hero characters.

Take some time to learn the ins and outs of the different cards and their strengths and weaknesses. Different sieges will require different combinations of cards. For instance, in a siege that throws a lot of AT-ATs at you’ll want to pack a lot of direct firepower like grenades and concussion warheads paired with a-wings.

When dealing with lots of weak enemies it’s a good idea to bring some AoE damage cards like Bombardment and Ion blast to deal with large groups of them using a minimum amount of cards.

Sony’s “take a step” tease is genuinely baffling

30 Nov

The God of War team has something new in the works, apparently.

Normally when a major publisher teases something we can make a guess as to of what it might be, but this latest one is pretty puzzling.

Not only is the GIF below not ringing any bells, it comes from Sony’s Santa Monica studio, which has fingers in a lot of pies. The most obvious contender, a God of War sequel, doesn’t seem likely – and when you consider the rest of the studio’s work (contributions to Journey, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, The Unfinished Swan, The Order: 1886 and loads more) it feels like it could be anything.

The GIF was posted in full on Twitter, but you can look at pieces of it by following Sony’s instructions to “take a step” – the path winds through NeoGAF, Facebook, SCE Santa Monica’s website, and seem to end at Reddit, with the line: “Sometimes you have to…” Hmm!

I have a feeling we might be looking at a PlayStation VR title, but that’s pure speculation.

Gosh, I can’t imagine when we might find out what Sony’s banging on about. It’s not like there are two major reveal platform events this very week or anything.

New Images for FNAF World Appear in the Wild

30 Nov
screen02.1[1]

Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) developer Scott Cawthon recently released some new images of his upcoming RPG, FNAF World. All the new images are on the game’s IndieDB site, and reddit user Poiuy2010_2011 helpfully amalgamated all the new images into one Imgur post.

The game’s looking as creepily cute as ever, plus there are numerous screens that reference the Atari-style mini-games that pop up in the regular FNAF series. It’s still unclear how everything ties together, or what kind of story Scott will be telling in this candy-colored RPG of his. One thing that can be discerned is that FNAF World isn’t as cute and harmless as it looks on its surface. As I pointed out when the game’s first trailer was unveiled earlier this month, each fuzzy update to FNAF World brings something dark and foreboding to its main page.

This time we have a darkened image of Balloon Boy that, when lightened, offers the words “MADNESS TAKES MANY FORMS.”

No arguments here! FNAF World is planned for PC and mobile. We should see it in 2016.

Tap My Katamari Registered by Bandai Namco

30 Nov

It looks as though a new Katamari game is in the works, as Bandai Namco has registered a number of 'Tap My Katamari' trademarks and domains.

The name seems to suggest a mobile or handheld Katamari game, but naturally Bandai Namco has not yet commented on the rumours.

It's been several years since Namco's last Katamari effort, Touch My Katamari, which launched alongside the PlayStation Vita in 2011 in Japan and 2012 in the west.

Just Cause 3 suffers frame rate dips on both consoles – report

30 Nov

Just Cause is famous for constant explosions, but there’s a cost to huge systemic open worlds that regularly catch fire and blow into a million pieces.

just cause 3 vid

Just Cause 3 is the first in the series to leverage the power of this console generation, and Avalanche hasn’t been shy about turning everything up to 11.

Unfortunately, it seems the hardware and engine just can’t keep up with the team’s ambitions; Eurogamer‘s Digital Foundry reports regular frame rate issues whenever the action gets going.

Despite operating at 900p the Xbox One build has it worse, but the 1080p PS4 version definitely has its own problems.

“Neither version of Just Cause 3 is able to sustain a locked 30fps, but it is indeed the Xbox One release that offers a noticeably lower level of in-game fluidity,” the site said.

“We’ve compared both cut-scenes and gameplay, and our lowest recorded drop occurs on Xbox One, where a massive explosion sends us plummeting to 20fps, while PS4 plateaus to 24fps in entirely different circumstances – with CPU power the likely culprit for bottlenecked performance there.”

Otherwise, Digital Foundry said both “look equivalent to the high setting on the PC game”, which is good news. Unfortunately even PC players may have problems with frame rate if they have mid-tier hardware.

“The GTX 950 paired with a Haswell Core i3 processor can easily run Just Cause 3 at 1080p maxed with SMAA anti-aliasing and 8x anisotropic filtering and stay well north of 30fps,” Digital Foundry said.

“Our ‘go to’ card for budget PC gaming – the GTX 750 Ti – does struggle though, dipping to a minimum 23fps even with shadow quality pared back to the high setting (though overclocking can help).”

You can check out the site’s frame rate test results below.

Just Cause 3 arrives on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on December 1 – why, that’s today, depending on your time zone.

Just Cause 3 Performance Issues Reported

30 Nov
Just Cause 3
MMO

Less than 12 hours from the official launch of Just Cause 3 and there have been some troubling rumors circulation that paint a less than pretty picture about the games performance on consoles. In a video by technical gaming analysis channel NXGamer, we are given a look at several of the different problem areas the game seems to have when handling lots of action.

The first and most troubling is the stuttering, which shows up any time there's an explosion on screen, sometimes dropping the frame rate as low as 17fps. If you've played a Just Cause game before you'll know how often there's an explosion on screen (it's a lot). Stuttering was reported on the PS4 and Xbox One version of the game.

The second issue that arose was with the loading times. On the Xbox One there were loading times that lasted up to a whopping 15 minutes. The PS4 also had extra long loading times, but they maxed out at around 2 minutes during the tests.

If you're thinking about getting the game on launch day, you may want to consider waiting until the issues are sorted before picking it up.

CoCo and Ambition Leave CJ Entus, No Replacements Announced
League of Legends
eSports

Today, the CJ Entus organization announced that mid laner Shin "CoCo" Jin-young and jungler Kang "Ambition" Chan-yong have left the League of Legends team. This announcement comes only a couple weeks after the team finished 2nd in the 2015 LoL KeSPA Cup. Ambition is moving on to join Samsung Galaxy Pro Game Team, but nothing has been made official regarding CoCo's future. Here is the statement released by CJ Entus:

"Hello fans,
We want to let you know some news you would have been curious about. CoCo and Ambition have decided to terminate their contracts with CJ ENTUS. Although we had hoped they would stay on the team, we respect CoCo's wishes to head to the world league and Ambition's decision to join the Samsung GALAXY PRO-GAME TEAM. We are sincerely sorry to let them go but we would like to express our appreciation and support for them and their future performance.

#CJENTUS #GoodBye #CoCo #Ambition"

Samsung has been re-stocking their roster, after a disappointing finish in both the LCK Summer Split and the LoL KeSPA Cup. Joining Ambition will be former Dignitas AD Carry Jo "CoreJJ" Yong-in as the team attempts to turn things around. Right now, incumbent jungler and AD Carry Eve and Fury (respectively) are still listed as starters, so the organization will have some decisions to make for the coming year. It would be difficult to imagine that Ambition will not take over the starting job, but for now, we'll just have to wait and see.

Legal Battle Brewing Between Blizzard and Bot Developer

Heroes of the Storm

German company Bossland has created multiple popular bots for Blizzard Entertainment games, including "StormBuddy", "HonorBuddy", and "DemonBuddy", for Heroes of the Storm, World of WarCraft, and Diablo II, respectively. Unsurprisingly, creating cheating tools has landed the company in legal hot water, with Blizzard filing a lawsuit against James Enright and several other unnamed parties.

However, that's where this story takes an interesting turn. While Enright is described as the mastermind behind the operation, that may not be completely accurate. The websites for the cheating programs list Bossland GmbH as the owner, and Bossland’s CEO Zwetan Letschew states that Enright is a freelancer. Apparently, Blizzard offered Enright a deal, and while all of the details have not been made public, it seems it compelled him to hand over the source code for the Heroes of the Storm bot, StormBuddy.

This has caused outrage for Letschew, and led to him making the following statement: “Today Blizzard acted in a manner as shady as possible for a multi-billion-dollar corporation. We were informed that the deal compelled [Enright] to submit the entire source code of Stormbuddy, which is actually the intellectual property of Bossland GmbH, to Blizzard. Activision Blizzard is fully aware that Bossland GmbH, and not Apoc, is the owner of the intellectual property of Honorbuddy, Demonbuddy and Stormbuddy, considering that there are six cases that are still in progress […] in Germany.”

Letschew now accuses Blizzard of copyright infringement: “Blizzard now possesses the whole Stormbuddy source code. There was no permission given by Bossland GmbH, nor were we contacted by Activision Blizzard, nor had [Enright] the rights to give out our intellectual property.”

It can certainly be difficult to tell who's in the right or wrong in cases like these, but a Blizzard representative did release this statement regarding the matter:

“Bossland’s entire business is based in cheating, and the use of their bots negatively impacts our global player community. That’s why we do not tolerate cheating in our games, and it’s why our players overwhelmingly support that policy. We’ve already won numerous cases against Bossland in Germany (where they’re based), and despite their tactics to delay the ongoing proceedings and the related repercussions, we’re confident that the court system will continue to validate our claims and ultimately stop the distribution of these cheating bots.

We’ll continue to aggressively defend our games and services, within the bounds of the law, in an effort to provide the best possible experience for our players. We want to use this as an opportunity to remind players who might not be aware—using bots, such as those distributed by Bossland, to automate gameplay in our games will result in a loss of access to those games.”
