Sony’s C5 Ultra and M5 smartphones may be the latest to jump on the selfie phone bandwagon

31 Jul

Sony's mobile division may be bringing the rest of the company down, but that hasn't stopped the company from working on new phones just yet. Thanks to 9to5Google, we're getting a look at the forthcoming Xperia C5 Ultra and M5, the latest in Sony's lineup. These leaks apparently came from the site Mail.ru, which appeared to inadvertently post a review of the devices early — but 9to5Google managed to grab the photos and info before it was all taken down.

The Xperia C5 Ultra appears to be a successor to the Xperia C4; it looks like the C5 will boast a bigger screen (6 inches, up from the 5.5-inch C4) and a front-facing camera that sports a super high resolution of 13 megapixels. It'll also have a flash, making this a phone clearly aimed...

OnePlus draws a crowd in Times Square

31 Jul

It's been less than a week and over 1 million people have already reserved the OnePlus 2. And that's without ever having held or used it firsthand. OnePlus' second smartphone, which it's positioning as the "2016 flagship killer," has debuted to an incredible amount of buzz — at least among tech enthusiasts. Your average person probably still hasn't (yet) heard of the company, but it's still an impressive showing. With the queue system only growing longer, OnePlus held a series of public events today in cities around the world that gave its fans a chance to handle the OnePlus 2 and score an invite of their own.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 Tips, Cheats and Strategies

31 Jul

fnafguide_05

Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 is a survival horror game from Scott Cawthon. In this game, you utilize sound and light to monitor your bedroom for encroaching animatronics that are out for blood. Gamezebo’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 Tips, Cheats and Strategies will help you stay awake and alive through the long, long night.

Play with headphones, in as quiet an area as possible

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 Tips, Cheats and Strategies

Though previously-released Five Nights at Freddy’s games require you to monitor a video feed in order to track the movements of your foes, nearly every cue in Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 is audial. You can’t see the animatronics approaching you, therefore you must listen for them.

In other words, play Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 with a good pair of headphones, and in a quiet area if it’s at all possible. May we recommend you play in your darkened living room at 2 a.m.?

Use the early nights to get a good rhythm going

As you might expect from a FNAF game at this point in time, the animatronics become more aggressive as the nights progress. Use FNAF 4’s early nights to get a feel for how the animatronics move, and most importantly, to learn what they sound like when they’re standing in the shadow of your open doors.

If anything sounds out of the ordinary at all, shut the door!

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 Tips, Cheats and Strategies

Never shine your flashlight down the hall immediately after running to the door. If an animatronic is standing nearby, they’ll jump at you as soon as you switch on your light. Instead, listen before turning on the light, preferably for a few seconds (which admittedly becomes harder to do as the animatronics become more active). If you hear something that’s not part of the game’s regular background noise, close the door. In fact, if you’re at all uncertain about a noise, close the door. It’s not a guaranteed save, but it might help you.

Check behind you on occasion

Though it’s easy to get lost in the rhythm of monitoring the doors, don’t forget to turn around and flick your light at the bed from time to time. Little Freddies like to converge there, and if too many of them pile up, Freddy Fazbear himself (or worse, the head of Nightmare Fredbear if it’s Night Five) will violently end your game.

Did the closet door just creak? Foxy’s in town

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 Tips, Cheats and Strategies

Don’t worry about checking your closet until you hear the closet door creak and / or see it move. That’s when Foxy (or Nightmare Fredbear on Night Five) takes up residence. Once that happens, make the closet a regular part of your patrol, even though you’d probably rather not.

When you check the closet, get ready to shut the door immediately

More often than not, Foxy will jump out of the closet when you shine your light inside it. This won’t result in a game over provided you act quickly and shut the door on Foxy’s ugly muzzle as soon as he peeks out.

Nightmare Fredbear works alone on Night Five

Nightmare Fredbear stalks you exclusively on the fifth night, meaning he’s not accompanied by any other animatronics. He’s active enough to make up for his lost mates, however, and he acts a bit differently from the norm. Shining the light at him while he’s down the hall makes him come closer instead of retreating, so if you hear him approaching from either side (this is where decent headphones come in handy!), close the door.

He also appears in the closet and on your bed, lucky you, so monitor those areas as you would on a “normal” night.

Engineers create world’s first white laser beam

31 Jul

Researchers at Arizona State University have created the world's first white laser beam, according to a new study published in Nature. More work needs to be done to perfect this technology, but white lasers could serve as a potential alternative light source — both in people's homes and in the screens of their electronics. Lasers are more energy efficient than LEDs, and the ASU researchers claim that their white lasers can cover 70 percent more colors than current standard displays.

Watch Kendrick Lamar as Uncle Sam in his ‘For Free? (Interlude)’ music video

31 Jul

Kendrick Lamar has already given us three music videos for songs off his critically acclaimed sophomore album To Pimp A Butterfly, including the tremendous treatment for "Alright," which should pull in a VMA Award if there's any justice in the world. Now Kendrick's back with a video for "For Free? (Interlude)" which is one of the boldest and deepest tracks on the album, and the new video is nothing if not audacious. Featuring a choir, a full band, and a rapidly multiplying Kendrick Lamar, the brisk video — directed by Joe Weil & The Little Homies — is the latest addition to one of the best albums to come around in some time.

Yahoo acquires fashion commerce site Polyvore

31 Jul

Yahoo just sealed another ambitious acquisition deal. The company announced today that it has reached an agreement to acquire Polyvore, a fashion-oriented e-commerce business founded in 2007. The announcement doesn't give a price for the deal, but the cost to Yahoo is likely to be substantial. Polyvore had raised $22 million in seed funding, with the most recent round closing in January of 2012.

"The combination of Yahoo’s industry-leading digital content with Polyvore’s expertise in community and commerce has outstanding potential," said Yahoo executive Simon Khalaf in a statement accompanying the annoucement. "We are thrilled to have the Polyvore team join us."

The State of One Direction: updates on the power structure of a boy band

31 Jul

As sinister as it is that their yearly album drop is just days before the holiday shopping season begins, and as much crap as they get dealt for recycling vintage rock with slightly more swoon-worthy harmonies, One Direction deserves a lot of our appreciation for what they do for young womenBy deciding to belong to teenage girls, One Direction decided that they didn't need to be taken seriously.

Boy bands are harmless first romantic interests, gateways to more diverse and better music, and a golden promise that there are men who don't think your every thought and feeling is silly. But what happens when one-fifth of your daydream is out the door? When Zayn Malik parted ways with the other four-fifths of One Direction in March, there...

HBO’s head of programming says Game of Thrones is getting an eighth season

31 Jul

Grab the nearest bottle of fine Dornish red and your cleanest goblet, because it's time to celebrate: Game of Thrones is getting one more season than expected. Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo dismissed the widely held idea that show runners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are capping the flagship fantasy drama at seven seasons. "'Seven seasons and out' has never been the conversation... The question is how much beyond seven are we going to do. [Benioff and Weiss] feel like there's two more years after six," Lombardo said.

It's not surprising that HBO is willing to give Benioff and Weiss virtually unlimited time to bring their story home. Game of Thrones is one of the most...

Revamped HUD Will Be Heading to Ranked Games in 5.15 Patch

The brand new HUD for League of Legends certainly changed the way we look at the game, but it wasn't all for the better. While opinions were overall divided on the new layout, there were undeniably some real issues that needed to be worked out. This meant that the old HUD was still being used for ranked play, as Riot Games recognized that it could have a negative impact for some players.

They have made a bevy of improvements, and believe that the new-style HUD is ready for all game modes in the next patch. While Riot has stated that some improvements may be made in the future, they believe it has been improved enough that it should no longer have a negative impact on the players' game experience. This is the list of all changes made:

Readability

  • New font and styling
  • Larger team frames, meters, and ult timers
  • Full square cooldown indicator
  • New colors differentiating “on cooldown” and “out of mana”
  • Larger stat icons and text
  • Larger Ping and FPS displays
  • Scoreboard now has more padding, larger champ portraits, and larger fonts
  • Added drop shadow to chat
  • Brighter XP bar
  • Larger Summoner spell timers on the scoreboard
  • Active ability events have been changed to gold (level up, toggle, just off cd) to differentiate from unavailable (cooldown, OoM)

Animation and Audio

  • Shortened and pulled back on many animations including “level up”, “just off cooldown”, and toggles
  • Scaled back many audio cues

Layout

  • CS, KDA, and Team KDA has rejoined game time in the top right
  • Scoreboard improvements including larger and clearer summoner spell and respawn timers

Misc

  • Added colored bonus stats
  • Added cast bars for all abilities other than instant casts
  • Swapped Crit and Attack Range in player stats
  • Mute buttons on the Scoreboard are now always visible
  • Minimap can now be scaled smaller

So, what are your thoughts? Have they done enough that you'll now welcome the new HUD in your ranked games? I'm personally excited for the changes, though I still think they should wait until after Worlds to introduce the HUD into professional games.

Microsoft reportedly investing in Uber at a $50 billion valuation

31 Jul

If it seems like Uber is working on another new round of funding, that is because Uber is always working on another new round of funding. Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal are reporting that the company has closed a new investment which values it at $50 million, and also includes Microsoft as a backer. The round gave Uber another $1 billion, putting its total funding at $5 billion.

Uber's endless appetite for cash is driven by its equally ambitious plans for expansion. It is currently active in over 50 countries and 300 cities around the globe. It is hiring drivers and adding cars at a rapid pace in all these territories, while also spending considerable amounts on political lobbying and legal battles with regulators.

Geralt won’t die after traveling to Velen in The Witcher 3 after update 1.08

31 Jul

Patch notes for the upcoming 1.08 update to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have been posted.

A release date wasn’t provided, only the mention of it “arriving quite soon.”

Unlike patch 1.07, this update deals mainly with performance, graphics and fixing gameplay issues such as severed heads disappearing after finishers are preformed. Everyone likes seeing the aftermath of their handiwork, ya know.

Here’s something else of note in the update, provided by CD Projekt RED:

“In patch 1.07, the level requirements for certain items were scaled up, leaving some players stuck with only unusable gear. With patch 1.08, we are introducing the Wolven Hour potion. This potion will be available in everyone’s inventory once they install the patch. It will reduce level requirements on all gear for a period of one hour.

“This will give players time to level up or find alternative equipment using the gear that was available to them in patch 1.05 but became unusable after patch 1.07. After one hour, the potion’s effects will cease and the requirements for all gear will revert to their original, pre-potion values.”

Below are the full patch notes, and be sure to keep your eye on The Witcher 3 forums for a release date.
