Portal Stories: Mel is a fantastic looking Portal 2 mod

31 Jan

Portal Stories: Mel is a Portal 2 mod with over 20 levels, a new protagonist, and custom dialogue and story.

And it looks smashing, really.

The community created mod from Prism Studios takes place between Portal 1 and Portal 2.

It stars a lady named Mel, who after being asleep for years, wakes to find she needs to escape the facility and face a “new, still unknown threat.” A new personality core will be with her on the journey.

Here’s the synopsis:

In the early years of Aperture: Science Innovators, Cave Johnson’s scientists rushed to get everything working to catch up with the growth of the company. Not everything worked as it should have.

Mel unfortunately took part in a faulty test called the Aperture: Science Innovators Short-Term Relaxation Vault, falling asleep for years.

Now, with a fake Cave Johnson telling her she needs to escape the facility and a new device called the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, her mind races with questions.

“Who is this impostor Cave Johnson?” “What happened to the facility and its staff?”

“What happened to me?”

Other features in the mod, which is basically an entirely new game, include custom animations, models, and textures; a 70s Prototype Portal Gun; and logic-based puzzles.

Portal Stories: Mel is out sometime during Q1 2015 for Linux, Mac and PC. It will be a free download for those who own Portal 2.

Elder Scrolls Online Update 6 contains new inventory feature

31 Jan

Along with Provisioning, and the Champion and Justice system, Update 6 for The Elder Scrolls Online will include the Collections feature.

The new feature allows player to organize various items such as costumes, pets, mounts in tab format. This will serve as a way to free up inventory space.

Items which can be sorted through Collections will be moved over when the feature goes live with the update. Whenever a new item is obtained, if it belongs in one of these collections, it will automatically be added.

Zenimax Online said the Collections system will be “significantly” expanded in the future with more categories and improved functionality.

Hit up the blog update for more information.

It was announced earlier this month The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited would release worldwide on June 9 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the monthly subscription being optional.

The MMO will switch over to the new sub-free model on March 17 for PC and Mac users.

Thanks, Massively.

Gorillaz announces its return with new artwork on Instagram

31 Jan

Everyone’s favorite cartoon band is getting back together. Gorillaz co-founder Jamie Hewlett excited fans on Thursday when he posted new artwork of band members Murdoc and Noodle on Instagram. Hewlett later confirmed that the band was getting back together with a simple reply to one of the Instagram posts: “Yes, Gorillaz returns.”

A photo posted by hewll (@hewll) on

There has yet to be an official announcement, but it’s expected that the band — together with Gorillaz co-creator Damon Albarn — will release a new album sometime this year. Its fifth album, The Fall, came out in 2011. Following that release, the band went on hiatus, though disagreements between Albarn and Hewlett are…

Final Fantasy 14 DirectX 11 upgrade coming with Heavensward expansion

31 Jan

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn will finally support DirectX 11 when its first major expansion, Heavensward, releases later this year.

According to the latest producer’s letter (thanks, D’toid), the switch from DX9 to DX11 won’t apply dramatic changes.

Instead, players will note finer aspects made to the MMO’s graphical quality, such as more realistic portrayals of shimmering 3D water and how light will refract and waver when hitting the water.

Players can also expect reflected lights and character reflections in “finely polished floors,” upgraded screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO), improved “rugged surfaces”, and more.

In some cased, the most significant difference will be an improved frame rate for those who have a GPU supporting DX11, as its not as resource-intensive as DX9.

More features which support DirectX 11 will be added in the future.

You can read the entire producer’s letter through the link, and also have a look at comparison shots between the game running in DX9 and DX11.

Final Fantasy 14′s Heavensward expansion is expected sometime in late spring or early summer.

Ohio postpones 2015 executions as it seeks lethal injection drugs

31 Jan

The state of Ohio has postponed all of its scheduled its seven 2015 executions as it works to find adequate supplies of the right drugs to put prisoners to death. Executions scheduled for 2016 are currently unaffected. The move comes after a decision earlier this month to abandon the two-drug cocktail it tested for the first time last year in a problematic execution that took 25 minutes of struggling, gasping, and snorting to kill a prisoner.

In a statement, Tim Young, the state's public defender, told the Associated Press that there was no need to follow through with executions "until we have answers to the numerous legal and medical questions posed by lethal injection."

Supreme Court to weigh in this summer

With the delay, the state...

Frozen Cortex updated with single-player mode, set for February release

31 Jan

Frozen Cortex, the spiritual successor to Frozen Synapse, has been updated with a single-player mode.

Known as Frozen Endzone at one point, the simultaneous-turn-based tactical game now sports the following features:

  • Knockout – A rogue-like permadeath-type mode where you need to get as far you can without losing a single match, using only limited randomized) player upgrades each week. Rewards will come for doing specific things in matches.
  • Global Cortex League mode – A more traditional league where the aim of the game is simply to do as well as you can in a season. Earn cash to buy new robot players.
  • Random League mode – Pits you against a vast array of randomly-generated teams. It’s the Wild West of Cortex.

Each mode contains sub-modes with various difficulty settings and rule variants. These include Timed Turns and Killer, which allows player to knock opponent robots out of the game with on hit.

New players have been added as upgrades in Knockout, or they can be purchased using match winnings, or in-game gambling through League modes.

Also included in the update is Frozen Cortex’s narrative, which develops as matches are played. The story takes place between playthroughs and also between the Knockout and Global Cortex League mode.

“Every team has its own AI coach, from Colonel Ruth Levine of the Armed Forces to Administrator Nomura from the media conglomerate SXT Vision,” explained developer mode 7. “Each coach has their own unique set of hundreds of in-game barks which are tied into the game’s AI calculations.

“The AI will complain when it knows you’re going to score; mock you when you’ve boxed yourself into a corner; carefully explain that there was a better direction you could have chosen.”

Various customizations have been added for both single player and multiplayer, and various tweaks such as the new “full replay” option.

Balancing updates and bug fixes will be applied to the update when necessary.

Frozen Cortex is expected to leave Steam Early Access in February, and the latest update is available now.

Blizzard to continue adding Heroes of the Storm characters until it “gets sick of it”

31 Jan

Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm MOBA currently has 33 heroes and the developer said it plans to continue adding more heroes until it “gets sick of it.”

Speaking with PC Gamer, the game’s game director Dustin Browder said there are currently six other heroes being tested internally, but there’s “no secret number” of heroes planned for the game, nor is there a “number that determines” when the game will launch.

“I’ve [been] asked many many times “how many heroes do you need to launch?”. Unfortunately, I would launch today with the number of heroes we have,” he said. “I’m good. The heroes are cool. We’re ready to go.”

Browder said maps will continued to be added, and the “rate of growth on maps is not gonna slow or stop until we say so.”

“We’re adding them as frequently as we can, and we’re going to keep adding them as frequently as we can, even after launch,” he said. “What you’re seeing now is not a burst of speed prior to launch. This is the pace that we’re hoping to continue developing at going forward. We’re gonna add game modes, we’re gonna add new heroes, we’re gonna add new battlegrounds.

“Our goal for this game is to communicate with our audience to the best of our ability that you haven’t seen anything yet. We don’t want this game to become stale. We do not want this game to become repetitive. We want this game to constantly evolve.”

Closed beta testing for the game began on January 13.

Those who purchase the Founder’s Pack for the MOBA will be granted automatic access to the beta test.

Safety violations at hotel force Smash Bros. tournament to change venues

31 Jan

After a Fire Marshall shut down the Apex 2015 event being held at a hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey due to safety concerns, the Super Smash Bros. tournament was been moved to another location.

The event was cancelled at the hotel on day one of the tournament before the first match could be started, after a fire alarm was pulled at 9am, resulting in the evacuation of the hotel and the fire department arriving on scene.

Instead of finding a fire in the Clarion Hotel where the event was being held, the Fire Marshall discovered various fire code violations. Due to theses safety concerns, the event had to be moved to another venue.

Earlier in the week, the hotel faced another problem when the roof of its three-story garage collapsed, causing a small snowplow and its driver to fall through the upper level.

The violations found by the fire department ranged from vehicles parked in the fire lanes (likely due to the garage collapse) and the hotel failing to acquire the proper permits to required for events with over 500 attendees.

Apex 2015 is the largest Smash Bros. tournament in history, and the three-day event is expected to drawn around 1,000 and 2,000 players and spectators.

Along with four Smash Bros. console game tournaments, Ultra Street Fighter 4, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Guilty Gear X, Killer Instinct and Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire tournaments are also to be held.

The Apex 2015 event was moved to the Garden State Convention Center in Somerset, NJ and kicked off today, thanks to Twitch’s efforts at arranging the new venue.

You can watch the tournament streams through these links: Main Stream, Secondary Stream.

Roulette (Lucky) Ores Mod 1.7.10

31 Jan

This is a simple mod combining the Troll Ore and the random events of Lucky Blocks with the customisability/functionality of command blocks. The mod is pretty self explanatory with an in game configuration through the mods menu to add as many or as little random events to your hearts content. The random events are simply command block instructions meaning anything you can do with a command block you can do in a random event. This includes block placing/destroying, custom entity spawning, items drops, player targeted commands, teleporting, inventory manipulation, etc. the list just goes on.

Ore Sheep Mod 1.7.10

31 Jan

Sheep love rocks, they just don’t know it. Teach them to eat stone by weakening them with splash potions of weakness and feeding them diamonds. They will quickly reject their previous grass-eating behaviors for anything rocky. Ore sheep will eat stone, stone stairs, netherrack, stone slabs buttons and pressure plates, cobblestone walls, mossy and regular cobblestone, gravel, and regular Minecraft ores. When an ore sheep eats an ore, it will begin growing that ore instead of wool. “Shear” the ore sheep by right-clicking it with a pickaxe. While in creative mode, you can induce an ore sheep to grow an ore by right clicking the sheep with your ore of choice.

The Pirate Bay comes back online seven weeks after police raid

31 Jan

A phoenix has replaced the iconic pirate ship atop The Pirate Bay today, celebrating the site's rise from the ashes. The torrent site's servers were raided by Swedish police forces over seven weeks ago, and has been offline ever since. But today, The Pirate Bay lives once more.

At the time of the police raid in the greater Stockholm area last month, it wasn't clear whether The Pirate Bay would ever return. The site and its founders have been relentlessly persecuted by authorities, with many of its original creators either behind bars or separated from the torrent site.

But The Pirate Bay has proven to be incredibly resilient. While it isn't clear how the site has come back online this time, it is known that the site runs off of "...
