Broken Age Episode 2 expected in early 2015

30 Nov

Broken Age’s second half is expected almost a full year after the launch of the first.

broken_age

Broken Age producer Greg Rice has revealed the long awaited second act of the crowdfunded adventure is in playable alpha all the way up to the finale section.

Writing on the Double Fine forums, Rice said the team’s next goal is to complete a playable alpha of the entire second act.

“That means, as you may have guessed based on recent updates and documentary episodes, the Act 2 ship that will deliver the complete adventure is now looking like it will be early next year,” he said.

“The game is looking really good and the team is working super fast, but we just gotta give the game the time it needs to really deliver on everything we’re hoping it will be.”

A more firm date is on the way, and Double Fine is making good progress.

“Now that we have all the writing and design finalized and VO recorded, the remainder of development is much easier to estimate, so the production team is currently working to nail down a new schedule for finaling the game that we can use as a goal for the team and also share with you all,” Rice added.

Double Fine is actually moving pretty quickly now that Tim Schafer has finished writing the second half, although it’s been a long wait.

The first half of Broken Age was released early this year to help finance the second half after Double Fine kind of ran out of cash; luckily, this plan absolutely worked, and the project is now making money. You can grab first half on Steam, which also nets you the second episode, and it’s on sale at the moment for $15.

Thanks, Polygon.

Cyber Monday is here to soak up any funds you have left after Black Friday

30 Nov

Black Friday has given way to Cyber Monday, which means various retailers and distributors have a new range of wallet-torturing bargains for you.

cyber_monday

Many of the sales and offers that began last week are still valid through Cyber Monday and even beyond – especially those offered by digital retailers – so be sure to peruse our huge Black Friday bargain guide as a jumping off point.

So far we haven’t seen many specific Cyber Monday sales, actually. Square Enix is throwing a specific Cyber Monday sale, with 225 items on sale at discounts of up to 60% through the publisher’s online store, but that’s the only PR we’ve received about it at time of writing.

Still, almost every retailer has a few special deals for Cyber Monday. Both Gizmodo and IGN have produced excellent round ups of some of the best offers.

We’ll update this article if we’re notified of any more specific Cyber Monday sales that aren’t just continuations of the Black Friday bonanza.

In the meantime, there’s the Steam sale. There’s always the Steam sale.

Batman: Arkham Knight – Developer Talks Suit and New Additions

30 Nov

Batman: Arkham Knight - gamescom-Screenshots 2014

Rocksteady Studios took part in a recent Ask Me Anything on Reddit, where the developer answered some questions about its upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight title.

Responding to a fan who asked why Batman’s new suit looks more robotic in nature when compared to previous installments, the developer said that it was necessary in order to accentuate the Batmobile.

“We wanted to highlight the interaction between Batman and the Batmobile – you’ll see that the suit mirrors the design of the car in a lot of ways. The new suit impacts gameplay as well, as it enhances some of Batman’s abilities, particularly in the way the Batman and the car work together.”

Elsewhere Rocksteady was asked about its favorite new addition to the game. The developer didn’t hesitate to point out the new open city as the main highlight of its game.

“The City design team here has done an amazing job building an environment that’s huge and intricately detailed. The detail in Arkham games was always my favourite thing about playing them before I joined Rocksteady, and it’s awesome that the guys have managed to keep that level of care on something so much bigger.”

It was also revealed that the game’s combat is being worked on to “look and feel awesome.” In previous Arkham installment, the combat has relatively stayed the same. In fact I’d say the voice overs and animations were the same as well. I never found this to be a problem because it was as satisfying landing a punch in the first title as it was in the last one.

In Batman: Arkham Knight, the team is working on the animations as well as the combat mechanics. The Predator Challenges are also being tweaked. “You’ll need to be a serious predator expert if you want to complete those sections without alerts,” said Rocksteady.

Batman: Arkham Knight is scheduled for release on June 2 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Steam Winter Sale 2014: Day 5 Features Arma III, Saints Row IV, Dishonored and More

30 Nov

Saints Row IV - Enter the Dominatrix

The Steam Winter Sale 2014 is now into its fifth day and this is probably the best lineup, or at least for me since it comprises of many titles from my wishlist.

Featured Deals (as of writing, will be renewed in 1 day and 22 hours)

  • Arma III (50% off – $29.99)
  • Dishonored (75% off – $4.99)
  • Divinity: Original Sin (33% off – $26.79)
  • Far Cry 3 (75% off – $7.49)
  • Gauntlet (50% off – $9.99)
  • Legend of Grimrock II (25% off – $17.99)
  • Plague Inc: Evolved (33% off – $10.04)
  • Saints Row IV (75% off – $4.99)
  • Train Simulator 2015 (85% off – $8.24)

Saints Row IV is up for grabs at a ridiculously low price. However, I’d suggest skipping this and instead purchasing Saints Row IV: Game of the Century Edition. You’ll pay $7.49 and get every content released for the title in one neat bundle. If you’re done with Far Cry 4, perhaps you’d like to play the previous installment as well – that is if you haven’t already. Finally Divinity: Original Sin is one title that I’m hearing a lot of praise about. Though I’m skipping it for now, it’s still on my radar.

Flash Sales (as of writing, will be renewed in 22 hours)

  • Age of Wonders III (66% off – $13.59)
  • Grand Theft Auto IV (75% off – $4.99)
  • Just Cause 2 (80% off – $2.99)
  • Papers Please (70% off – $2.99)
  • Resident Evil 6 (75% off – $9.99)
  • Risen 3: Titan Lords (50% off – $24.99)
  • Rocksmith: All New 2014 Edition (66$ off – $20.39)
  • Torchlight II (75% off – $4.99)
  • Transistor (50% off – $9.99)
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV (40% off – $17.99)

Resident Evil 6 was received with warm reviews, but there were still some who thought it as average. If you want to test its waters out, go ahead with the sale. Torchlight II is one fantastic title that has to be played by everyone. Bastion lovers just have to try out Transistor. Ultra Street Fighter IV is another title from my wishlist but I’m going to wait it out and wait for a better deal. I’m almost certain that Steam will end up offering it for greater than the present 40% discount.

David Jaffe Trolls Everyone With New God of War Game

30 Nov

God of War - Kratos

David Jaffe, Game and Creative Director on God of War and God of War II respectively, trolled the Internet over the weekend when he teased he was working on a new God of War title.

“Fuck it- it’s less than a week away&I’m allowed to confirm it anyway at this point: we ARE making a new God of War,” he tweeted.

As expected, the news went viral and everyone including me were jumping around wondering what kind of reveal we would see at Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Experience event.

However, the joy was short lived as the developer followed that tweet up with the following: “Inspired ice sculpture for my kid’s birthday party!!! Kratos ice sculpt is so gonna rock!!!!!!”

It’s known that Jaffe and his new studio Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency are currently working on a new action-game based IP. It’s to be revealed at the PlayStation Experience. However, just reading the developer mention a God of War title had everyone buzzing with a next-gen installment of the franchise.

We’ll see what he has been working on in a week’s time. In the mean time we can argue over whether we really need a new God of War installment, with Kratos’ saga finally ending with God of War III.

Wonderful short film imagines the day when we conquer the solar system

30 Nov

"I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote."

That quote from Moby Dick, perhaps more than anything else, best explains a fantastic and inspirational new short film called "Wanderers." In less than four minutes, the film takes you on a stunningly beautiful journey across our solar system. But this is no space documentary; it's a thoughtful and perceptive dream of what our corner of the universe would look like if we were to expand beyond planet Earth.

Touch the stars

"Wanderers" comes from Swedish animator and digital artist Erik Wernquist, and it's the product of careful scouring of the NASA archives to piece together realistic portrayals of our neighboring planets. Wernquist has published a detailed explanation of his...

Battlefield: Hardline – Stealth Action Highlighted

30 Nov

Battlefield: Hardline

Stealth is not a term that can be truly associated with Battlefield players. However the latest installment, Battlefield: Hardline, will feature a lot of stealth action and over the weekend Visceral Games highlighted just how this system will work.

Executive Producer Steve Papoutsis explained that with detection gadgets like heat-seeking AI, players will most probably be detected if they choose to go head on. Once detected players have the choice of either continuing forward of go into hiding. Here’s where the system, dubbed simply as ‘last known position,’ comes to play.

Enemies will now be tracking your last known location and so will be searching where they think you’re at. Players can take advantage of this by leading them astray, flanking them or leading them into an ambush.

On that note, Papoutsis also said that the system is still being fine-tuned. If players successfully dodge detecting-AIs for some number of seconds, the AI won’t simply reset and go back to its normal state. Rather than that, Visceral is working on them to go into ‘search mode’ where they will be aware of you but won’t exactly know where you’re at.

“That puts them back in that state where you can then use a freeze on them, or stealth up behind them and take them out.”

With so much inventory and gameplay elements at play, Visceral is making sure that Battlefield: Hardline’s stealth system ends up as balanced.

The game is scheduled for launch on March 17 next year in North America and on March 19 in Europe for the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

Broken Age: Act 2 Delayed to Early 2015

30 Nov

broken age

Backers of Double Fine’s adventure game Broken Age have been told that Broken Age: Act 2 has been delayed to sometime in early 2015.

The official statement posted on the developer’s forums states that Act 2 should be available for Alpha testing by the end of this year. Even though development is going “super fast,” more time is needed to ensure the game’s quality and hence the release was decided to be pushed back by a bit.

“The goal now is to get all the finale work done so we can hit Alpha on all of Act 2 by the end of the year.” reads the statement. “That means, as you may have guessed based on recent updates and documentary episodes, the Act 2 ship that will deliver the complete adventure is now looking like it will be early next year.”

Broken Age saw to a total crowd-funding of more than $3.3 million from 87,142 backers. However, that was still not enough to complete the entire game. Double Fine ultimately decided to split the game into two acts with the second act awaiting release. Reviews of the first act have been pretty good and that would be a major boost to the studio to go all out for the next one.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Tetsuya Takahashi Shared New Details

30 Nov

Xenoblade Chronicles X
XenoBlade Chronicles X is a Wii U exclusive JRPG which is aiming for a 2015 release. Game director Tetsuya Takahashi took to twitter in order to share some new details about the title.

According to his posts on twitter, apart from Kunihiko Tanaka, many other artists are working on the game, and they are designing a number of different alien races.

Each race will have its own unique attributes and culture. Takahashi is going to reveal these races at the game’s official webpage.

Furthermore, it was also revealed that Yuichiro Takeda is not the only one handling the script. The main reason of this being that it is too much for just one person to handle.

Takeda is being helped by Kazuho Hyodo on the script as he has some experience of working on Sci-Fi. XenoBlade Chronicles X is set in the year 2054, where two alien races are at war with each other near earth. Their war caused a lot of damage to our planet.

For that reason, earth is inhabitable, so joint government is launching Earth Species Pan Immigration Program; Humans are using ark ships to evacuate.

The story of the game follows an ark ship which crashed on the planet Mira, as the passengers of this ship try to make a new home on Mira.

Xbox One Sales Dominate on Black Friday, Bundles Account for 90% of All Console Sales

30 Nov

It has only been two days since Black Friday and market research firm InfoScout already has data about how well each console has sold.

Microsoft had tried to do everything to win this holiday season in the US with a temporary price cut and bundles for the Xbox One and it appears to have worked. The Xbox One accounted for more than half of all the consoles sold on Black Friday.

The Xbox One accounted for 53 percent of the consoles sold, followed by the PlayStation 4 with 31 percent of sales. Last generation console, the Xbox 360, accounted for nine percent of the sales, followed by the Wii U with just six percent, The PlayStation 3 lagged in last with only one percent of the sales.

Consumers were also asked if they bought the console for their kids and 92 percent of people who bought a Wii U said yes. Two-thirds of the people bought the Xbox One purchased it for their kids, while 45 percent of people who bought a PlayStation 4 purchased it for their kids.

90 percent of all console sales on Black Friday came bundled with at least one game. 75 percent of people said yes when asked if the console coming bundled with a game influence their purchase.
