This is what Instagram for Android would look like with Google’s Material Design

31 Jul

Google's "Material" redesign isn't expected until later this year, but it's already getting people excited. The new user interface style is supposed to be based around how physical objects move and is "grounded in tactile reality, inspired by our study of paper and ink." Google is already encouraging third-party developers to redesign their apps to fit with the new style, but some people just can't wait for that to happen. Designer Emmanuel Pacamalan has created a concept video showing Instagram rebuilt using Material Design principles, and the results are gorgeous.

Instagram has traditionally been very slow to add visual features, but did a big redesign for iOS 7, so it would make sense that we could see a new look for the upcoming...

Sony: Revenue for Gaming Division Nearly Doubles, 3.5 Million PS4s and PS3 Shipped

31 Jul

The PlayStation 4 has been a huge success for Sony, as the console has taken an early lead in the 8th generation console race. Revenue for the latest quarter which ended on June 30 nearly doubled to 257.5 billion Yen ($2.5b).  Sony reported a profit of 4.3 billion Yen ($43m) in the gaming division, which is up from a loss of 16.4 billion ($164m) during the same quarter a year ago.

Sony also released shipments of its video game platforms. Shipments of home consoles, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 combined, more than tripled from 1.1 million units a year ago to 3.5 million. Handheld consoles, the PlayStation Vita and PSP, also saw a slight uptick in shipments from 0.6 million units to 0.75 million. Software sales increased from 68 billion Yen to 85 billion Yen.

The 3.5 million home consoles shipped is way above the 1.1 million Microsoft reported for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 combined during the same quarter.

Sony forecasts revenue of 1,240 billion Yen for the gaming division for the full year. Profits are expected to be 25 billion Yen.

Watch Deadmau5 and Toronto mayor Rob Ford get coffee in a Nyan Cat Ferrari

31 Jul

Electronic dance music artist Deadmau5 created an internet stir with his meme-tastic Nyan Cat Ferrari at the Gumball 3000 earlier this summer, but after the race is done, what do you do with a souped-up cat-powered hyper-car? Why, take Toronto mayor Rob Ford on a coffee run, of course. It's hard to know what to expect when you get a rock star DJ and a disgraced mayor together, but the result is oddly sedate. They mostly talk about traffic, coffee, and being in the Ferrari itself.  Still, the video is worth watching to see Rob Ford, recently out of rehab for an addiction to crack cocaine, order a quintuple espresso.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is finally happening

31 Jul

Beyond Good & Evil is finally getting a sequel, although creator Michel Ancel had to half quit Ubisoft before the publisher would admit it.

beyond_good_&_evil_2

Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been teased regularly for years, but in a statement regarding Ubisoft Montpellier’s current project, Ubisoft confirmed that it’s definitely happening.

“In many ways, BG&E is an inimitable game – it appeals to all generations of gamers and is an inspiration behind many of Ubisoft Montpellier’s past and future games,” the publisher told Eurogamer.

“It’s still far too early to give many details about this new title, but what we can say is that while Michel and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier are working with the core tenets of BG&E, they’re developing something that aspires to push past the boundaries of a proverbial sequel and leverages next-gen technologies to deliver a truly surprising, innovative and exceptional game.

“The entire team is excited about the direction this extremely ambitious project is taking, and we’ll have more to share later, as it progresses.”

The news came as a consequence of the revelation that Ancel, who also created Ubisoft mascot Rayman, has founded his own independent developer: Wild Sheep Studio. The new team is composed of 13 staffers and has a game in the works already, with an announcement expected soon.

In addition to guiding this new team, Ancel will remain on board at Ubisoft Montpellier, to work on the studio’s current projects – one of which has now been revealed as Beyond Good & Evil 2.

“In addition to spending some of his time on this new venture, Michel is leading the creative development of select projects at Ubisoft Montpellier, including an extremely ambitious new title that is very close to his and the team’s heart,” Ubisoft’s Xavier Poix said.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been on the backburner a long time. Ancel and other Montpellier staffers regularly show teasers, concept art and other materials, but until now Ubisoft’s official line has been that it doesn’t want to confirm anything until the project is firmly underway. Both Ancel and Ubisoft have said the grunt of the PS4 and Xbox One era was required to power their vision for the sequel.

Why the creators of ‘Halo’ left Microsoft to make ‘Destiny’

31 Jul

Bungie's sci-fi shooter (and sort of MMO) Destiny held an open beta this past weekend for all home consoles (PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360) simultaneously. It's an ambitious game for the team that created Halo, joined Microsoft, and subsequently split from the company to make this multi-platform game (signing a 10-year deal with publisher Activision Blizzard in the process). We talked with Polygon editor-in-chief Chris Grant for more on the impact of the beta, why Bungie left, and how important this $500 million project is for everyone involved.

Dark Souls 2: Sunken King Armor, Weapons and Rings Locations

31 Jul

Crown of the Sunken King
If you’re not entirely satisfied with the “vanilla” gear your character wields in Dark Souls, you’ll want to try out the additional arsenal introduced into the game through the Crown of the Sunken King DLC.

Dark Souls 2: Sunken King Armor, Weapons and Rings

Dark Souls 2: Sunken King DLC not only brings with it new regions to explore and never-before-seen enemies to slay, but also plenty of fresh gear that you would want to get your hands on. We’ve compiled a list of the new Armor, Weapons, and Rings that are available in this DLC, and how you can acquire them.

Armor Locations

Crown of the Sunken King
Location: The Crown of the Sunken King is the final helmet you will acquire after completing the DLC’s main quest and defeating Sinh, the Slumbering Dragon.

Drakeblood Set
Location: Once you have acquired the Dragon Stone from the iron chest in the spikes area in Dragon’s Sanctum, head downstairs to the caverns with the massive monsters. Head to the left and look for stairs. Go up, and then insert the Dragon Stone to complete the bridge. Take the lift from here and head up.

Flower Skirt
Location: After acquiring the Eternal Sanctum Key in the lower levels of Dragon’s Sanctum, head to the regular entrance from Shulva – Sanctum City. There is a locked door here which you can use the key on. Ahead, you’ll come across a hidden Shulva bonfire, and the pathway to the Cave of the Dead.

Move forward and turn left after reaching up, and drop through the hole here. Drop down again to the floor of the stairwell, then exit a balcony that overlooks a pathway. Drop to the walk, and drop further onto a platform below it.

Sanctum Knight Set
Location: The Sanctum Knight Set is randomly dropped by the Sanctum Knights in Dragon’s Sanctum. Attack the glowing statues to make them appear.

Sanctum Priestess Tierra
Location: The Priestess Tierra is a rare drop by the Sanctum Priestess enemy in Dragon’s Sanctum. You should try using some Rusted Coins or equip the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring and/or Wandering Merchant Hat to increase your chances of acquiring it.

Sanctum Soldier Gauntlet
Location: This is a common drop from the Sanctum Soldiers that can be found in Shulva.

The cave is filled with deadly enemies, and after grinding your way and defeating the three optional Phantoms at the end, you can follow on ahead to find an iron chest that contains the Flower Skirt.

Turn left, step on the platform beneath the destroyed bridge, then turn left, and eventually right. You’ll see a Knight here – head past him and go downstairs to find a treasure room with chests. Search the corpse against the wall to finally find the entire set.

Weapons Locations

Drakeblood Greatsword
Location: In the lower levels of Dragon’s Sanctum, you’ll reach a cavern with two large two-legged monsters with massive mouths and teeth.

Head to the left of the area to reach a sandy region with stairs near them. Skip the stairs and follow the path to find a dead corpse carrying this sword.

Once you do, you’ll gain access to the locked room. Go past the Knights here and down the stairs with the spike strap to find three chests. The iron chest here has the weapon.

Puzzling Stone Sword
Location: Enter Dragon’s Sanctum and head down the stairs to the room with the circular door. Continue through the corridor-ish area, jump over the missing section of the stairs, and reach the locked room.

Here there are two square slots through which you can shoot arrows. One is to the left of the locked door, and another is at the end of the hallway, up high.

Sanctum Crossbow
Location: The Sanctum Crossbow, much like the Sanctum Repeating Crossbow, is also dropped by the Sanctum Knights in Dragon’s Sanctum. The Knights will drop either one of these two bows as weapons, though it seems the Repeating Crossbow is slightly rarer.

Sanctum Mace
Location: The Sanctum Mance is a random drop by the Sanctum Soldiers found in Shulva.

Sanctum Repeating Crossbow
Location: This is a unique bow that can shoot three arrows at once, and even a full barrage. This useful weapon is dropped by the Sanctum Knights in Dragon’s Sanctum. You’ll need to hit the glowing statues to make these knights visible.

Wrathful Axe
Location: This axe can be acquired by trading the Soul of Elana the Squalid Queen with Ornifex, in Brightstone Cove Tseldora.

Yorgh’s Spear
Location: This is a powerful spear that can be acquired once you trade Sinh the Slumbering Dragon’s Soul with Ornifex, in Brightstone Cove Tseldora.

Rings Locations

Flynn’s Ring
Location: Flynn’s Ring can be found in the Dragon’s Sanctum. Head downstairs there and through the narrow pathway.

Fall into the hole in the steps, and kill the eggs-sac spider there. Drop down into the area with more eggs. Here, take the stairs up and then climb the ladder to find an iron chest with this ring inside.

Lightning Clutch Ring
Location: This is another ring that can be found in Dragon’s Sanctum. You’ll need the Eternal Sanctum Key to access the locked door when you enter Dragon’s Sanctum.

Inside, you’ll find a treasure vault. Open the second-last chest to find the clutch. This ring will add +30 Lightning damage to your weapons, but will also decrease your defense.

Yorgh’s Ring
Location: After going past Sinh’s boss arena, you will enter an area which leads to the Sunken Crown. Instead of going after the crown, check the corpses on the right to find the ring.

Why chefs love to hate Yelp

31 Jul

Having your livelihood dependent on the goodwill of a group of anonymous strangers is enough to give anyone a complex. In this piece for San Francisco Magazine, a group of chefs explain their broken relationship to Yelp and the legions of reviewers who control whether their businesses live or die. While Yelp can help people find new restaurants (or can help a city track food poisoning), chefs obsess over reviews and many wish the service didn't exist at all. "If two or three days go by and business sucks, I'll go, ‘Shit, I got a bad review on Yelp.'" says Jeff Mason, the owner of a sandwich shop in San Francisco. The anonymous system, the lack of control on fake reviews, and the difficulty engaging with reviewer has put restaurateurs in...

Apple reportedly paying internet providers to ensure speedy delivery of its data

31 Jul

Apple has apparently turned on its new content-delivery network, and is reportedly paying Comcast and other big ISPs to move hardware into their data center and build direct interconnects to their networks. This is the exact same evolution that Netflix has been going through, building out its own CDN and agreeing to pay ISPs for interconnection. The major difference is that Netflix has loudly opposed the fact that ISPs can charge a fee for this arrangement, while Apple has stayed mum on the issue.

Pokemon stage starring Reshiram teased for Super Smash Bros. 3DS

31 Jul

Legendary Pokemon Reshiram along with two other Pokemon will appear on a stage in Super Smash Bros. 3DS.

The stage was teased by creator Masahiro Sakurai in a post on Miiverse.

According to Sakurai, the stage is based off someone’s castle, which is likely N’s Castle from Black and White since that is where Reshiram can be caught.

Same with Zekrom who will also be making an appearance alongside Milotic.

Check it out for yourself below.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS is due in October, and the Wii U is out sometime during the holidays.

Thanks, D’toid.

Google reveals which countries have used the ‘right to be forgotten’ most frequently

31 Jul

Google's finding that a lot of people have things they'd rather others forget about. In just about the first month and half that it was accepting requests for links to be removed under Europe's controversial new "right to be forgotten law," Google says that it received over 91,000 submissions, asking that over 328,000 links be removed. Google doesn't say exactly how many of those requests it's fulfilled — and it sounds as though it hasn't even gotten to take a look at all of them yet either — but it does say that of those that it's looked at, just over half of the links have been accepted and removed.

Three maps that show Tesla’s plan to blanket the world in superchargers

31 Jul

There are 121,446 gas stations in the United States (as of 2012). Together they employ nearly a million people and do almost $250 billion in annual sales. But they can all trace their origins back to one, in Missouri, built in 1905 with a gardening hose. What began as a side business for a handful of pharmacies became a massive industry because Henry Ford's Model T quickly became so popular that there was suddenly stable demand for everything from gas stations to mechanics.

Now, Elon Musk and...

Some of these Minecraft Floating Island builds are amazing

31 Jul

Some of the most amazing Minecraft creations have been concocted for the “Head into the Clouds” contest hosted by Planet Minecraft, and while we won’t find out who the winner is until next week, you can look over some of the submissions and root for your favorite.

The contest started in July and tasked contestants with creating a world based on Planet Minecraft’s Floating Island map.

The one caveat was creators had to keep the original structure of the floating intact. Otherwise, they could build upon the map as they saw fit.

Below are just a few of many, really neat creations.

Aeternium – the Symphony of Dreams: by BlockWorks

Genesis Turtle – A Living Ark: by TechZero (I love turtles!)

New Oculus Rift dev kit uses front of a Galaxy Note 3 as its screen

31 Jul

It doesn't get much more "off-the-shelf" than this: the new Oculus Rift developer kit uses the front half of Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 for a display. Samsung's logo is in its usual spot, and the frame even has slots where the phablet's home button, earpiece speaker, and various sensors would normally go. iFixit made the discovery while tearing down the Rift Dev Kit 2, which is now making its way to developers who ordered the VR headset earlier this year.

And while it's a strange thing to see, the decision to use a Samsung component that's already rolling off the assembly line makes total sense. It's less costly than producing a custom panel — which we don't expect to see until the consumer Rift arrives — and the Note 3's 1080p Super...

Summoner's Rift Update Changes

Originally Posted by Riot (View RedTracker Source)

It’s time for our first big update to Summoner’s Rift! We’ve got a lot of content today, with changes for everything from Baron Nashor to the minimap. Check below for all the details and, as always we’d love to hear your feedback in this thread and please report any bugs you find here.

MAP & ART CHANGES:

  • FOG OF WAR :: In-game coloration has been improved!

  • GROUND TEXTURES :: Ground textures have been adjusted so that jungle pathing should be more readable

  • MORE GROUND TEXTURES :: We've made the ground textures brighter for the north and east jungle, as well as all lanes

  • TEXTURE UPDATES :: We've updated textures all over the map

  • MINIMAP BRIGHTNESS :: Minimap brightness levels have been adjusted to address visibility issues (should be much easier to see wards on the minimap now)

  • CRITTERS :: Ambient Critters have emerged on the Rift! See if you can spot them!

BRUSH

Context: When we were looking at the positioning of top lane / bottom lane brush, we found that they were actually off-center by about 450 units. We considered just leaving them alone, but realized that this is exactly the kind of stuff we should be doing with an update to Summoner's Rift, so we shifted them back.

  • BRUSH POSITIONING :: Top lane and Bottom lane brush have been re-centered (they’ve moved about 450 units in total)

DRAGON:

Context: We did some tuning for the Dragon fight to bring his damage closer to what you might expect on Live. That said, it was really tough to tell how much damage Dragon's fire laser (flame breath) was doing - and how frequently he was using it – so we removed it in the name of CLARITY.

  • FIRE BALL :: Deals 50% damage to targets beyond the first (instead of full AoE dmg)

  • FLAME BREATH :: Removed (the dragon laser)

BARON NASHOR:

Context: We're testing something new! While these changes mean Baron will be easier to take out when a team has full control (less damage, no Voracious Corrosion on multiple targets), they also make it easier for opponents to engage on a team that's already started fighting Baron (as he has more crowd control abilities).

Final point: removing the knock... forward? on Back Spikes makes the fight a little more forgiving for the squishy targets who want to hide deeper in the pit (or maybe we want them huddling there when a fight happens so it'll be harder to escape, who knows...).

  • INDICATORS :: Have been recolored and will appear faster

  • DEATH BREATH :: - Area-of-effect changed to match the visuals

  • VORACIOUS CORROSION :: Baron's Spells no longer apply stacks of Voracious Corrosion (now only applied to whoever is tanking damage)

  • BACK SPIKES :: No longer knock enemies toward the front of the pit

  • ACID BALL :: No longer deals damage-over-time in the acid pools. Now slows for 50% inside the pool.

  • BARON TAIL :: Knockup time increased to 1.25s (from 1s). Damage lowered by 25%.

  • BUGFIX :: Baron now properly regenerates health when attacked from over the wall

TECH STUFF

  • Global map adjustments have been made so that minimap icons and in-game Fog of War will now draw correctly

  • Animated Brush performance optimizations

  • Creature/minion performance optimizations

  • Faster loading time for low end machines

  • Memory improvements across the map by optimizing animated props

BUGFIXES

  • Black screen of suck has been fixed

  • Mac is no longer die

  • Banner of Command now properly transforms cannon minions

  • Rengar's Dominion trinket is gone from the shop

  • Nunu's consume now gives buffs

  • Lee Sin no longer crashes the game when he uses Sonic Resonance on the Blue Buff (whoops)

  • Red and Blue caster minions no longer have different attack speeds (double whoops)

  • Red cannon minions have learned to attack properly

  • Health bars on structures are now in the correct place

  • Turrets are no longer missing particles

  • Pathing around turrets has been fixed

  • Dragon and Baron always attack

  • Missing icons for Baron/Dragon/jungle camps have been added

  • Debug strings when pinging Baron/Dragon/jungle camps have been fixed

Top Brushes

Champion Changes

Gnar

  • GNAR! [ R ] - Scaling is now 0.3*AD (from 0.5)
  • GNAR! [ R ] - Now slows by 45% (down from 60%)
  • GNAR! [ R ] - Slow lasts now 1.25/1.5/1.75 seconds (from 1.5/1.75/2.0)
