Square Enix Finally Recognizes Western Demand of JRPGs

31 Mar

Square Enix President and CEO Yosuke Matsuda has revealed some interesting information in a recent interview regarding upcoming tiles for this year, as well as about the growing interest in JRPGs shown by the western circles.

Speaking with Japanese website Nikkei Trendy, Matsuda-san called upcoming titles Final Fantasy Agito and Seiken Densetsu: Rise of MANA as a good start for 2014. He also confirmed recent rumors that Square Enix is indeed working on a new Tomb Raider and that information on that, as well as Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, will be given at E3 2014.

Normally we would be a bit disappointed to know that Square Enix is being tight lipped about their games, but seeing that E3 2014 is just a couple of months away, we can definitely wait it out.

Most interestingly though, Matsuda-san confessed that it has taken the company this long to realize that there is a strong demand of good Japanese RPGs in the western market. He took Bravely Default as an example, quoting its strong Japanese RPG elements and that even though it was made for the Japanese market, it actually sold very well worldwide.

He mentioned that in the past, console games developers had been trying to focus on a global audience and ultimately ended up missing out on breaking through the Japanese public, as well as missing their worldwide target. Hence, in the future developers should be focusing on powerful and rich stories that carry strong JRPG elements. Doing so can help them achieve good results.

As for Square Enix itself, Matsuda-san admitted that it may have been too focused on globalizing its target, losing focus on who they were making games for. This will be corrected and he took the new Hitman title as an example that is being developed based on what they have learned from Hitman: Absolution.

Square Enix recognizing the western demand of JRPGs only means good news for us in the shape of more titles in the future.

Hearthstone, Diablo 3, other Blizzard games affected by broad-spectrum DDOS attacks

31 Mar

Blizzard has warned European users they may experience issues with Diablo 3, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, StarCraft 2 and World of Warcraft in the wake of ongoing DDOS attacks against European service providers.

A Battle.net post warns of the chances of disconnections and high latency as a result of malicious activity.

Blizzard itself is not the target of the attacks; “the disruption effects rippled and have been felt by a portion of our players’ population,” the publisher said.

“While we are closely monitoring the situation we wanted to thank you for your patience and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause,” Blizzard said.

North American and other international players appear to be unaffected.

GTA Online to Get More Original Scores Soon

GTA V - Musicians

Rockstar Games has today revealed that Electronic Musician, a most respected modern music production magazine, is honoring the original soundtrack of GTA V by having the title as its March issue cover story.

The article features interviews with some of the game’s developers, as well as with Woody Jackson who composed the entire score. Furthermore the cover story takes readers behind the scenes and unveils just what it took to compose the game’s beautiful soundtrack.

Each of the game’s protagonists were assigned their own composers. However the real challenge was the amalgamation of these tracks so that they could be played on the fly at any point during the course of the game. The success of this also ensured that Rockstar could have the score react to gameplay.

“The music heard at any point during the course of the game or on The Score disc is an amalgamation of the composers’ sounds in a true collaboration,” notes the article.

Following the cover story announcement, Rockstar also revealed that it plans to add even more tracks to the already massive score of GTA Online. A wide range of “never-before-heard unreleased instrumental music” will be added soon in the form of a free update and will be composed by the original composers themselves – Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson, Alchemist and Oh No.

You can listen to a special preview of those new tracks below.

Smartphone gaming spend accounts for about half of entire Japanese market – report

31 Mar

Smartphone gaming is still on the rise in Japan, with spend now equalling about half of total industry earnings.

The news comes via Japanese firm CyberZ, as translated by analyst Serkan Toto. According to CyberZ’s research, the Japanese smartphone gaming market was worth $5.4 billion in 2013, a significant increase on the $3 billion of 2012.

Toto noted that the total Japanese games industry is worth about $10.8 billion, making smartphone gaming about half of its total value. That ratio has changed in favour of smartphone gaming by a whopping 30% since 2012.

CyberZ predicted the Japanese smartphone market will reach $6.5 billion in 2014, with growth expected through 2016, although at a decelerated rate each year.

These figures do not include feature phones, which remain a lucrative market in Japan.

Battlefield 4 Squads in beta testing – rumour

31 Mar

Battlefield 4 may soon see the return of the popular Squads grouping option on consoles, with one player posting images apparently showing a test already underway.

VGLeaks gathered a collection of the off-screen photos from Reddit, showing the German language multiplayer menu on PS3 in Battlefield 4.

A new menu item, Squad Access, is shown, marked as a beta feature.

Squads were introduced in Battlefield 3 and allow small groups of friends to group up so that they end up in the same teams during matchmaking.

DICE has been re-introducing multiplayer features like Platoons that didn’t make the jump between Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, so this development seems quite likely to be true. However, as with any screenshots posted randomly on the Internet, it’s best to wait official word before getting too excited.

Apple and Samsung prepare for another patent lawsuit: 90 Seconds on The Verge

31 Mar

Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair California, where we lay our scene, from ancient patent law to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two technologically advanced foes. A pair of star-cross'd board members take their life; Whose misadventured piteous overthrows. Do with their death bury their companies' strife. The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love, And the continuance of their parents' ongoing legal battles, which, but their employees' end, nought could remove, Is now the never-ending traffic of our lawsuit; the which if you with patient jurors attend, what here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend or possibly ban sales of the other's products.
