EA to Host Conference to Discuss LGBT Issues in Gaming – News

28 Feb

Yesterday, Electronic Arts announced that they would be hosting a one-day conference to discuss and address homosexual and transgender issues in the video game industry.

The LGBT Full Spectrum Event will take place in New York City on March 7th, and will include such topics as including "authentic" LGBT-themed characters, creating positive work environments for members of the LGBT community, and how to deal with homophobia in gamers.

Last year, EA was listed as having one of the most LGBT-friendly work environments by the HRC.

BioShock Infinite Developer Almost Quit Over Religious Controversy – News

28 Feb

Irrational Game's BioShock series has become renowned for the way it approaches mature themes and deep subject matter. However, a scene in the upcoming BioShock Infinite was so religiously charged that it almost caused a developer to resign from the studio.

"There was a scene in the game at the end where . . . one of our artists--who got to a point in the game, played it, turned off BioShock, opened up his computer, opened Microsoft Word, and wrote a resignation letter; it had offended him so much," said lead designer Ken Levine in an interview with GameSpot

Rumor: Star Wars 1313 Production Put on Hold – News

28 Feb

Star Wars 1313 wowed audiences at least year's E3 with its next-generation technology and creative use of the Star Wars license. However, after hardly any new information on the game in over eight months, it appears that there may a disturbance in the game's development.

According to Kotaku, anonymous sources involved with 1313's development have claimed that the game has been put on hold since Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm (and Star Wars 1313 developer LucasArts) last November, as all Star Wars related efforts are going into the planned new theatrically released trilogy spearheaded by J.J. Abrams.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Confirmed by Ubisoft – News

28 Feb

Want more Assassin's Creed? Tough, you're getting more, whether you like it or not. Ubisoft have confirmed the rumours that we reported on the other day - Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will be the next entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Box arts have been released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC.

The PlayStation 3 version of Black Flag will also include an additional 60 minutes of 'exclusive' gameplay, although Ubisoft have yet to detail what form this additional content will take.

Also, pirates.

PlayStation 4 User Interface Screenshots – News

28 Feb

A number of user interface screenshots for the PlayStation 4 have surfaced. They demonstrate a number of the features that were discussed during the announcement presentation, including media sharing, live gameplay streaming, and the companion app for mobiles and tablets. It also looks like the trophies section for games will include more stats and charts for trophy hunters to admire.

Here are the screenshots:

Rumour: Gran Turismo 6 Headed to PlayStation 3… this Year – News

28 Feb

SCEE’s Senior Vice President, Michael Denny, seems to have put his foot in it. In an interview with Silicon Republic he quite clearly lists Gran Turismo 6 amongst a list of games coming to the PlayStation 3:

"Look at the games coming out on the PlayStation 3 this year like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6."

He mentions Gran Turismo 6 without any hesitation whatsoever as he lists off a number of first party exclusives headed to the console this year.

It's a possibility that isn't as remote as it might first sound. Gran Turismo 6 has actually been in development since 2010, so a 2013 release isn't out of the question, despite the lack of information thus far released for the title.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory – Review

28 Feb

Those crazy personified console girls are back but this time around it's time for some time travel. Technically it's a parallel universe but consider for a moment that you're in a world where Lowee (Nintendo) is the only nation and the Planeptune (Sega), Lastation (Sony), and Leanbox (Microsoft) nations are created during the course of the game. That's the past, and I don't care what the characters say.

Most of the protagonists are returning characters with the same quirks as before. The shut-in MMO obsessed Vert, tsundere Noire, and quiet but easily angered Blanc all reprising their roles as their respective countries' CPUs along with a couple new additions to the squad. The most important new character is Plutia who is Planeptune's leader instead of Neptune. A lot of the comedy in this title is focused on the vast difference between Plutia's normal and transformed personalities. Watching the usually cool headed and somewhat ditzy Plutia go all dominatrix on friend and foe alike makes for some pretty interesting reactions if nothing else. The storyline focuses on Neptune's attempts to find out about this new dimension she's been thrown into and find a way back to her own. It's pretty frivolous but it does make for a few laughs. Unfortunately it wasn't enough of a distraction for me to ignore the mind-numbing, grindtastic gameplay.

Unfortunately it wasn't enough of a distraction for me to ignore the mind-numbing, grindtastic gameplay.

Rumour: Microsoft and EA Secure some sort of Exclusivity Deal – News

28 Feb

Rumours are suggesting some sort of next-gen exclusivity deal between Microsoft and EA which will be revealed at Microsoft's upcoming 'Next Xbox' event. CVG are reporting that they've received confirmation from two separate sources that EA and Microsoft have secured a partnership with one another.

Non-Xbox gamers needn't be too worried though, it seems, as CVG go on to heavily qualify their story:

"It is likely that such a partnership will not extend beyond exclusive downloadable content, or staggered release dates. An outright exclusive EA game on the Next Xbox would be unlikely, and certainly a major coup for Microsoft if such a deal were to be secured."

Thomas Was Alone Coming to PlayStation Network – News

28 Feb

Thomas Was Alone was one of the most innovative and emotionally charged PC/Mac indie games of last year, so PlayStation owners who missed out on the title should be excited to know that it's coming to the PlayStation Network this spring.

Thomas Was Alone will be available as both a downloadable PS3 and Vita title through cross-buy, which, to those of you still unaware, means buying it for one system also lets you access it through your PSN account on the other system. The game will also feature a new developer's commentary, as well as timed exclusive downloadable content that serves as a prologue to the game and features a character with a jetpack.

Insomniac Files Trademark for “Sunset Overdrive” – News

27 Feb

In the last few days, independent development studio Insomniac Games has filed a US trademark for Sunset Overdrive, under the categories "Computer game software" and "Entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game".

The domain http://www.sunsetoverdrive.com is registered by Ryan Schneider, Insomniac's Director of Marketing.

Insomniac has made no official announcement on the matter, but it seems likely that this is a game in development at the studio, whose only current known project is third-person shooter Fuse, which is set to be released this year on PS3 and Xbox 360. This generation, Insomniac has tended to develop two games at a time, and it seems possible that Sunset Overdrive is the second game currently in development, and potentially a PS4 title.

Top 6 Games of March – Article

27 Feb

March is pretty packed as far as game releases go, with over 40 retail games alone expected, many of which are looking to be quality titles. It was so tough to narrow things down to just five games that we're actually listing the top 6 most anticipated, most high quality games of the month. Hopefully none of these end up getting delayed, unlike last month's cream of the crop, Rayman Legends.

Tomb Raider
Release date: 5th March
Platform(s): PS3, X360, PC

Tomb Raider has seen a plethora of sequels, spin-offs, and even a reboot or two, but it may well be that Square Enix have hit the mark on their umpteenth attempt at making Tomb Raider relevant again. Previews for the game have been remarkably mixed over the last year or so, but early reviews suggest that the team at Cyrstal Dynamics managed to iron out the flaws in time for release.

“Deus Ex: Human Defiance” Trademarked Filed by Square Enix – News

27 Feb

Could Square Enix be planning a follow-up to 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution? If their recent trademark filing is any indication, they just may well be.

The folks over at the NeoGAF forums have noticed that Square Enix has filed a trademark for "Deus Ex: Human Defiance" earlier today. Deus Ex: Human Revolution, of course, was in fact a prequel to the original Deus Ex, so could a potential follow-up be set in the same timeframe as Human Revolution

Of course, that depends if there even IS a sequel. Companies often file trademarks as a means to protecting catchy titles from competitors, and this could just be one of those instances. Still, Deus Ex: Human Revolution met both critical and commercial success when it released in 2011, and 2013/14 seems about the right amount of time for a sequel to come out. With E3 right around the corner, could we see some sort of announcement soon? We'll just have to wait and see.

No Cross-Play or Battle.net Support for Diablo III on PlayStation – News

27 Feb

Blizzard shocked, well, some people last week when they revealed that Diablo III would be coming to the PlayStation 3 and the newly announced PlayStation 4, and caused minor controversy when it was revealed that the console versions of the game would allow for offline play (a feature that the PC version does not have). However, it looks like Sony fans may have their own qualms, as Blizzard has announced that the PlayStation versions of Diablo III will not feature cross-play with its PC counterpart.

"While we think cross-platform play would be awesome, there are currently no plans to allow connectivity between PlayStation Network and Battle.net (this is pretty standard for most games that have PC and console support)." said Blizzard community manager "Vaeflare" in response to queries on the Battle.net forums. "As a result, the characters on your Battle.net account and PlayStation account will also remain separate."

Blizzard also elaborated on the prospect of controller support for the PC version and mouse/keyboard support for the PlayStation versions, stating that "don't have any plans for that kind of support right now. Similarly, since Diablo III for console was designed with a controller in mind, the PlayStation version of Diablo III will not support USB mice or keyboards."

Retro City Rampage Has Been Most Successful On Vita, Developer Says – News

27 Feb

Sony's PlayStation Vita has gotten a bad rap as of late, thanks to its struggle to find an expansive audience since its launch last year. However, thanks to the 2012 indie hit Retro City Rampage, some developers may want to take a closer look at the struggling system.

That's because, according to RCR creator Brian Provinciano, the Vita version of the game has actually proven to be the most successful. Provinciano posted on Twitter earlier today that "Indies should definitely jump onto the PS Vita. RCR's sold much more on PSN than XBLA and more on PS Vita than even PS3," going on to clarify that this does not include the free versions of the game given out to subscribers of PlayStation Plus.

Most interestingly, even the Steam version has been beat by sales on the PlayStation Network, with Provinciano adding that "Steam's done far better than [XBLA], but PSN has still done the best."

RUMOR: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Poster Leaked, Has Pirates – News

26 Feb

We may have gotten advance notice on what to expect from the next Assassin's Creed title. An anonymous tipster has sent a picture to Kotaku of what appears to be an Assassin's Creed IV poster. Dubbed Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, the poster shows a swashbuckling, hooded assassin in pirate garb, surrounded by several other pirates aboard a pirate ship.

Pirate Assassins! Hell yeah, matey!

The background of this picture suggests that it was taken in the back room of a Gamestop. The tipster who took the picture also added a note that this poster will be on display at Gamestop March 4th.
